Ppl downplaying the influence of the 2000s X-Movies are wild. If it hadn't been for them, it would've just been Spidey and the situation would have been the same as WB/DC for the longest time where studio execs felt only 1-2 characters (Batman and Superman) were viable

This! Like without X-Men's influence, there's no Fantastic Four or Daredevil. Which hey, they were hits at the time, even if they weren't the greatest. Marvel Comics wouldn't be out here realizing the stable of heroes they had and wouldn't go independent. And again, Kevin Feige got his start with the X-Men movies. Without those movies, would he be at Marvel Studios in the first place? That's a legit query right there.

yeah people act like that first X-Men movie was some huge influential hit. I mean, I don't know we already had Blade in 1998, and Spider-Man was already in development and came out just two years later. X-Men did decently for its budget but it barely outgrossed stuff like Scary Movie and What Lies Beneath

Domestic Box Office For 2000 - Box Office Mojo

X-Men more than doubled Blade's box office. And despite the attempts at making things "grounded" and "realistic", the X-Men movies were far more identified and promoted by their Marvel branding than the Blade movies ever were. If anything, Blade was advertised less on the Marvel brand and more on just being a Snipes action movie. Plus, the first X-Men came out at a time when the only superhero movie character making any sort of money was Batman. And even then, we were post-Batman and Robin. By this point, superhero movies were completely dead. I don't really see why we're downplaying one of the biggest hits of the year. A movie that, at that time, had the sixth biggest opening in box office history.

Now I'm not saying it was the main impetus why Marvel became as big as it was. Spider-Man was a guaranteed hit no matter what. But it certainly did a lot to make Marvel popular and cool with today's kids. Hell, the first X-Men was Kevin Feige's first job. You can argue that these movies could have grossed more, but without X-Men, we literally wouldn't even have The Avengers or Avengers-level hits. So there.

I can't wait to see people on "Film Twitter" be massively upset that this movie will overtake the domestic gross of Oppenheimer.

As irrevelant as they are (never take them seriously), I'm almost certain there will be someone on that website that will declare "cinema is dead" because the Minions made more money than a Christopher Nolan movie.

Nobody on Film Twitter will care mate.

    Inflation is extremely overrated

What about change in movie going habit and the medium of entertainment increasing??

OTT is far far more bigger worldwide right now then in 2019.

So saying 500m in 2019 is 600m today is bit misleading in hindsight. I could be very well wrong but when judging movie performance, Inflation is wrong method

Roughly 80% of the time I see people bring up inflation here, it's typically just trying to downplay a movie's success or just to instigate a fight. Obviously the metric isn't totally invalid, but I do often feel like I have to sideeye people when they bring it up. It was especially annoying back in 2019 when Marvel nerds and Cameron nerds were trying to use inflation to dog on each other's movies, even though Endgame and Avatar were both objectively massive hits.

Deadpool only dropping about 50% despite summer weekdays shows WOM is clearly through the roof.

also people mentioning MoM reminded me of how the rules of the multiverse seems to change with each movie. Didn’t they say in that movie that when you dream you dream of your other multiverse self and if you go into another universe you could cause its destruction or something? Makes no sense.

When it comes to science fiction mumbo jumbo in movies, it's just best to smile and nod and let it happen.

Lower opening day than trap despite the fact that the trailer viewership was really high for trap and much better than old I’m really not sure what happened here is it even gonna do 15 million at this rate

I've liked all of M. Night's movies from Split onwards, but that's his last movie that really landed with the GA. I don't think it's a big reason, but the badwill from his last couple movies probably didn't help. The reviews for Trap also aren't all that, so that makes it even worse for fence-sitters.

  8. So like...I kinda get the casting decision. But honestly, I'd be curious of the box office in an alternate world where Harold and the Purple Crayon starred an actual child and had Zachary Levi as the dad or uncle or something. Because to quote The Fairly Oddparents, when a little kid is using his imagination to draw stuff with a purple crayon, it's kind of cute. When a grown adult does it, it's just plain creepy.
