I just saw an ad for Pitch Perfect 3 that said This Pitchmas.  Nope

I distinctly remember when my Mom and I were at a movie, the trailer for PP3 ended with the tagline "Last Call Pitches," and my Mom died laughing because of how "clever" it was. It was then when I realized my Mom's a loser. :gold:

Films I rated an A or A- (it's rare for me to rate anything an A+):
    A Ghost Story
    Baby Driver
    Blade Runner 2049
Coco (I know you disagree with this)

    Detroit

    Dunkirk
    Gerald's Game
    Ingrid Goes West
    IT
    Ladybird
    Logan
War For The Planet Of The Apes
    Wonder Woman

So yeah A24 has 3 releases that I've given an A that are all vastly different films. Props to them.

You only have two A24 movies.

Oh yeah and speaking of that, does anyone know when it actually goes wide? I know it hits limited next week but I haven't seen any other dates yet.

Guessing end of December if not early January to stay away from TLJ and the other stuff being released around Christmas. Screener will probably be out by then.

Nothings out next week now if you don't live in NY or LA (I think those are the only two cities getting new releases). Disaster Artist doesn't go wide until the 8th.

If there is any saving grace for JL, it's that. Predicting Coco has a strong hold.

I feel it'll go for a La La Land style expansion. 4 theaters, then ~200, then 600-800 come Christmastime, then around the 1,000 mark in January.

  4. I enjoy weekends like these, where almost everything reaps some form of benefit.

Obviously, Coco did super impressive. It didn't do quite as amazing as Moana did, but considering Coco was a much harder sell, it's good to see it at least beat out Tangled (at least when it comes to estimates) Hopefully, that A+ Cinemascore helps the movie achieve amazing legs before Star Wars, Ferdinand, and the other Christmas flicks take away attention from families and general audiences.

Justice League's drop isn't completely awful, especially compared to the 2nd weekend drops for BvS and Suicide Squad, but I don't think it's something WB should breathe easy about, especially considering the total's still not up to my and many others expectations. I'm still not one of those "DCEU IZ DED" guys, but I feel a few changes in their current development schedule are inevitable.

In the case of the holdovers, everyone else did wonderful. Wonder is showing great staying power, Thor: Ragnarok is inching ever closer to the triple century mark, and Daddy's Home and Orient Express are still neck and neck with one another, and staying absolutely steady from last week is absolutley remarkable. Hopefully at least one of them joins the century club this year, for genre diversity's sake. The Star and Bad Moms also held well. In the latter's case, I guess opening on the first of November wasn't much of a hindrance, considering how the film doesn't seem to have that much of a drop gross-wise to the first Bad Moms.

Specailty-wise, Roman Israel did...whatever, while Three Billboards and Lady Bird did very well with their expansions, and both will likely still do well throughout the rest of the awards season. Darkest Hour also saw a pretty decent opening. Of course the real standout was CMBYN. A PTA just under Moonlight is awesome, and hopefully this bodes well for a Moonlight-esque run during awards season.

So yeah, lit weekend all around.

Yeah anyone who proclaims that something is locked to win Picture with months to go isn't worth listening to. Especially after La La Land.

    Spoiler

Technically, I never said anything was a lock to win for Picture, I just wanted an excuse to use the Butler-moji.

  6. Coco

    November 24, 7:00 PM, 45% full

    Trailers:

    Duck Duck Goose

Peter Rabbit (laughs, talks after the trailer, "I wanna see that" from a kid)

    Sherlock Gnomes (murmurs)

    Smallfoot

    A Wrinkle in Time

    Incredibles 2 (laughs)

Olaf's Frozen Adventure: Laughs at certain moments, though the people behind me sighed and moaned whenever a new song popped up.

Coco: Mild laughs, but the crowd was pretty quiet....except for some toddler who babbled and cried throughout many moments in the film. The worst was the part where

    Spoiler

Hector is singing to Coco. Everything was complete silent, except for that fucking toddler crying, and it was only after that part the mom decided to take the little bastard outside.

I don't even get why you would take a toddler to a 7 PM showing anyway. Shouldn't it be asleep? Bah, whatever. At least most of the crowd applauded at the end though.

Isn't this pretty damn early? If so, then DHD estimates - at least for Coco - will go up for sure.

But for the record, IF these numbers were not to change, Moana posted 21.8M on Black Friday, a 119.5% increase from a 9.9M Thursday. A 20.3M Black Friday would be around a 128% increase for Coco... and the movie already had a stronger Thursday hold than Moana did, so maybe the thoughts of Coco being the more backloaded of the two were correct after all. Wom explosion is helping, obviously.

No, this stuff was from earlier in the morning, but either the full chart updated, or we forgot to post it until now.

Apologies if this has already been posted:

    Quote

Moviegoers took a rest on Thanksgiving spending an estimated $35.1M on the top 20 films but their coming back in full force today on Black Friday, which is one of the more lucrative days at the B.O., shelling out north of $75M, a 114% climb. Disney/Pixar’s Coco is still faring better than the studios’ Good Dinosaur two years, but just a few steps behind last year’s Moana and mega hit Frozen which respectively posted $82M and $93.6M over their Thanksgiving five-day openings. Tonight, and even tomorrow’s matinees, will provide a better indicator of just how high this A+ CinemaScore film can go. Some think Coco has a show at $77M in five-days, but industry estimates currently point toward $74.8M by Sunday. 3-day now projected at $51M. Industry estimates have Coco at $20M-plus today. Yesterday, Coco rang up $9M, which again is better than Good Dinosaur‘s Thanksgiving ($6.5M), $900K shy of Moana ($9.9M) and $2M behind Frozen‘s ($11M) Thanksgiving.

Warner Bros./DC’s Justice League wasn’t that far behind Coco yesterday, making $8.5M which will yield a $42.2M 3-day, $61.3M 5-day, and running cume of $173M.  Figure around $17M for the Diana Prince, the Caped Crusader, Man of Steel and friends.

Lionsgate’s Wonder in third place made $3.9M which puts the Stephen Chbosky-directed title at $22.6M over FSS, -18%, and $32.7M over five.

Is this from that Sherlock Gnomes movie? :gold:

I haven't seen the trailer yet. I'm sure I will tonight when we see Coco after Thanksgiving dinner.

Mary J. Blige is in the movie btw. Good to know her post-Mudbound acting career's starting on a high note.

exactly. but these haters totally ignore this. Which is biased of them to do this. It saw a 1% decrease hardly something to write home about but they make it a big deal. It only did 5% less than Wonder. i mean WTH. and they make it sound like its worlds end smh.

You know, I have a genuinely serious question: considering you have continuously complained about this site's haters and how this site is just IMDB reborn...why are you here? Almost every single one of your posts has been you attacking others for their personal opinions on DCEU movie, and people not giving these films the highest praise concerning box office, so why do you regularly post here? It's like a vegan activist spending all of their time ranting and raving about McDonald's, and yet still visits the place every day. Frankly, it's far more productive to go to another forum or website that fits your values and the way you think than somewhere that's seemingly "way too biased" against movies you like. Just saying.

My favorite "old people at the movies" moment was when Matthew Broderick appeared in Manchester by the Sea. Everybody let out a very loud "ohhh" for some reason.

Same thing happened at my theater. To be fair though, even I didn't know he was going to be in this until he appeared in the movie.
