  1. The benefit Creed has compared to something like Fantastic Beasts or Star Wars, which will always be reliant on nostalgia legacy characters, is that the Creed movies and Rocky movies have very different audience demos. I love Stallone and I'm not trying to discredit his popularity and draw power for the first two Creed movies. Rocky's one of my favorite film franchises of all time. But Donnie is a character who has really stood out on his own and strongly connected to people my generation, especially to POC communities, that we don't need Rocky to be there to get us excited. MBJ is enough. If anything, I feel like Creed II kinda limited its appeal towards people my age demographic by focusing too much on Rocky fanfiction silliness. So having something more in line with the original in terms of story and character, in line with something that the most active moviegoing demos would lap up (18-34, Black, Latino), and having awesome IMAX tech and a new actor who is making the rounds...yeah, we don't need Stallone, at least us youths. Again, it's legit cool to see a franchise like Rocky now go on long enough where its main character isn't needed anymore to sell tickets. I think this is the only franchise that is able to do that.

  5. This is such a stupid way to frame things. Creed/MGM is clearly a different beast from Amazon Studios and their usual output. You don't have to do this kind of wacky spin stuff for this movie.
  6. My issue here is that these remakes just don't have much longevity when it comes to franchise continuations. The typical life of these remakes is that they come out, people talk about them for nine months, and then never talk about them again. They all coast on the novelty of seeing the scenes and songs and aesthetics you remember from the movie you watched as a kid and nothing else. That works for one movie, and obviously works from different movie to different movie. But it doesn't really get audiences invested in the characters enough to see them in a follow-up adventure. Both Alice 2 and Maleficent 2 suffered this fate. People liked the remakes okay, but it wasn't enough to get you excited to see them again. Why would a prequel to what many consider one of the worst remakes hold any better than those films? Really the only financially viable way if you want a franchise continuation is to do what they were going to do with Beauty and the Beast and do a Disney+ show. You still get big headlines and people are more willing to have it on as something in the background rather than pay money to see it in theaters.
  7. I still feel bad for all those people who were in the Smile campaign tour and were forced to smile for an eternity while at baseball games. That must have been painful.

  10. Yes. Both Inside Out 2 and that Lion King prequel look like they'll be financial duds, especially the latter.

  17. I mean I guess it doesn't really matter in the end, and spooky horror stuff has always been a summer staple, but they still could have put this in the same late September date as stuff like Hotel Transylvania or Hocus Pocus 2 and probably get way more interest from kids who want to get into the Halloween spirit rather than be awkwardly jammed in a packed summer season. But I guess it's still different enough from a lot of the other movies surrounding it outside of Ninja Turtles that it will probably be fine.
