  3. No, the 46M box office represents US viewership. And sure, not every single person watched the whole thing. But I would think most would stick with it and watch until the end, so this is all a very rough estimate.
  4. When I first heard the title, I assumed it was a Kung Fu Panda rip-off about a cartoon dog that knows karate or something. Not what I got!
  5. Netflix's Top 10 archive says it was watched 27.2 million hours worldwide. That would translate to about...12.95 million views globally. Using Nielsen's domestic numbers of 470 million minutes viewed on its opening weekend, that gives us 3.73 million views. Ticket prices of like $12.50, or whatever the ATP of 2021 was, would be about...46M. So...yeah, I guess Clay really is onto something, because that's probably what it would have made if given a 2018 theatrical release.
  6. I mean I watched movies at home and watched tons of football games in my house when I was a kid and I turned out fine as a "young, hip liberal". Just because Netflix is popular doesn't mean people at large refuse to socialize or are total shut-ins. And if we're talking "a divided nation", as somebody on the spectrum and bisexual, I really don't want to feel connected with people who hate my very existence.
  7. This right here is why "dark" movies do so much more for me emotionally. People will try to say things will get better and to stop focusing on the cruelties of the world, but it all rings as hollow attempts to distract from the fact that global warming is killing us and fascism is still on the rise, with so much progress that was once made completely tarnished and thrown away by a growing disdain against intellectuals and scientists (congrats to Brazil though for waking up from all that trash, though who knows for how long). Trying to create movies that exist to give happy thoughts, that try to tell us things will get better because Tom Cruise will save the day, isn't close to reality. It's all a lie that doesn't make me feel better over the fact that the world is set to collapse before I even retire. With a sad movie, I may be bummed, but it at least lets me think about what's going on in real life. That's so much more rewarding than a farce with a smiley face on it
  8. Honestly I'm the opposite. A good dark and sad movie is like catharsis. Really gives me a chance to express my emotions on any issues I'm facing from the real world. Distracting it with a goofy comedy or upbeat film doesn't distract me at all, because I'm still thinking about how sad and frustrated I am and end up not getting anything out of the Bob's Burgers episodes I typically laugh at. Obviously not trying to discredit the other side, because they deserve entertainment that makes them feel good, but I really hope the current world affairs doesn't mean "dark" or "depressing" movies will go away forever. Because honestly, trying to force optimism in everything would have some real bad repercussions.
  9. Are they though? Almost all of Netflix's biggest movies are cheesy big-budget schlockfests like Red Notice or Bird Box plus corny teen romances like Purple Hearts (though there is still Irishman and to an extent Don't Look Up, so I guess exceptions to the rule?). And the biggest movies on Nielsen are either animated kids movies that exist to sell toys, blockbusters that were previously in theaters like Uncharted, or similar action cheese like Gray Man or Tomorrow War. It's not just a theatrical issue IMO.

  11. Reading through IMDb, doesn't seem much worse than Three Billboards. And Mom can handle violent and sexual content. Hopefully she'll be interested, though she said she wants to see Armageddon Time as well and that's probably going to leave theaters sooner. Maybe I should prioritize that? I dunno, I'm just rambling 🤷‍♂️
  12. Was hoping to take my mom to this next week since she loved Three Billboards. I'm aware that this has little similarities with that film, but would she still like it? She can enjoy the occasional "weird" movie, but she really only likes middlebrow awards bait stuff.
  13. For what it's worth, I do remember some Twitter discourse on Till and how it was another 12 Years a Slave-style "Black trauma" movie and that Emmett was being "exploited" by Hollywood. They even had to put out a whole behind the scenes video where the director said to the camera that Emmett's abuse wouldn't be shown on screen and that the Till family backed the whole thing. I definitely have a lot of disagreements on that whole discourse, but like...I guess that's an issue? Certainly not the main one of course. Still think the main issue hurting the moviegoing market, as I keep saying, is on audiences and their refusal to see anything that isn't a nostalgic toy commercial or a horror movie. Like even the few exceptions to this rule we all went gonzo over like Crawdads or Lost City, while obviously still strong and commendable hits that deserve praise, would have made way more money 10 years ago. It's a sad state of current moviegoing that's only going to get worse as time goes on.
  14. I don't think Clay is asking nor expecting these movies to stay through until December or January. And I think it's fair to say Tar and Till should have at least waited a little bit longer before going into over 1,000 theaters just to drum up a little bit more hype. Like them being in the same TC as Triangle of Sadness' 610 theaters this weekend, then 1,000 for Tar and 2,000 for Till the following weekend, where there is nothing out apart from the fans-only One Piece movie, would make way more sense. It allows them to get more buzz and word of mouth for one more weekend and audiences who were busy with Halloween are more willing to come out. Banshees is set to go to about 500-600 theaters next weekend, and probably won't get to 1,000 until the 18th or Thanksgiving, with it probably going a little longer before the December holidays kick in. It's a good strategy capitalizing on word of mouth and the November holidays. But I guess at the end of the day, Focus and UA don't really care and are just waiting for these movies to hit PVOD, where the supposed real money is. So what do I know?
  15. Moderation Yeah we're not doing this concern trolling garbage. The trailer's coming soon, this will make more money than any of us will ever make, Cameron will get another submarine from the movie's box office. Move along please.
