China box office may not be enough to save the film.
I’m informed King of the Monsters is not a China-US co-production whereby a larger than normal 25%-27% rental from the Middle Kingdom would flow back here.
That’s actually a good thing? If I’m reading that correctly, LP should be getting more $ back from it than traditional Hollywood films.

The talks about pushing back GvsKong and reshooting etc won’t happen. Filming is done and they’ve been in post production for awhile now. Probably a lot of uneasiness around there though.

Same.
And the meltdowns from Godzilla stans would be amazing.
Unnecessary my friend. Rooting for things like that is terrible.

There’s actually one GREAT news for Godzilla..... it’s actually having a really good opening weekend in Japan. Even with Saturday being discount day it still made a ton. It’s already at roughly 7m through Saturday. That’s pretty damn good for a western film in Japan.
geez besides Japan, and the okish start in China, would have been nice to see one other territory breakout.

Maybe.. MAYBE Godzilla can break out in its home country of Japan. It’s having one hell of a Saturday there even with discount day. Would love to see Corpse’ report.. maybe it has a shot at 40-50m(total)there.. needs it badly. It made roughly 5m on Saturday.... around 7m total already.
GREAT debut in Japan seems to be the only actual really good thing going for it right now.. that and a just ok China run.
If if it had just one odd territory breakout other than Japan, I’d be extremely happy. Like it’s been said before just a handful of territories have reported through the weekend... hopefully something looks good today with reports coming in soon.

God it’s so weird coming home a hour ago to a crowd that loved the film to this.... strange man. I had a great time with this movie... not the results we wanted but lets move on and end the Monsterverse on a high note with GvsKong next year.

Godzilla vs Kong should be ok... but I don’t know at this point as I thought KotM was looking at 600m WW.
The franchise is going back to Toho after 2020 I think. They have some ambitious plans I think.

It’s funny... KotM is doing great in its home country of Japan. China is doing OK.
-
How does Legendary even stay afloat.. lol
anyway hopefully GvsKong can make up the difference profit wise from this. KotM will be too tight in that department.
-
Can only hope WOM kicks in for Godzilla. It’s a fun summer movie. Like I said people are missing out.

I would second that. If openers next week hit it in china it could finish below 120m there as well. This is a disastrous drop for the franchise.
Yeah it’s hard to believe honestly. The movie is straight up made for the summer... just got back from it and the crowd loved it. Very weird coming home from THAT reaction to THIS news. Hopefully at least 400 WW at this point.... 270 os and 130 domestic is right on the money there...
current rumor is a 170m budget. So always the rule to double that(340).. we’ll never know the cost of advertising but 400 would definitely make it tight.

So IF Dark Phoenix doesn’t play out we’ll next weekend, could Godzilla actually have a decent second weekend drop?
-
Yo.... I’ve been waiting 5 freaking years for this Godzilla sequel. Watching it FINALLY in a few hours. Whatever it does at the box office is beyond my control... hopefully WOM and legs prevail, but I’m going to sit down and enjoy this and not think about it!

Btw just watched KOTM for the fourth time and its still the best movie of all time.
If you disagree, pls dont reply, i dont care at all
How many people in the theater?
-
Trying to picture where KotM will land in final worldwide gross if everything stays in the “meh” realm....
Domestic: 130-150
China: 110-130
Japan: 25-30
Overseas(minus China and Japan): 120-140(taking opening weekend with a x of 2)
Worldwide: 385-450
Definitely not a lot of people expected... hopefully it does better than these projections somewhere.

$12.7M from approximately 16,500 screens in 51 markets through Thursday.
Yes through Thursday. Still want to see the full picture through the weekend.

If KOTM does 450 ww on 200 prod budget despite a hefty amount coming from China, how will it affect GVK's production?
Trying to make the film sound better.. I am... but deadline reported is as a 170m budget. Much better than what we all thought... which was that 200 number.

If KotM can get to that 65m number I’d be happy as hell. Would be a win for sure after all the negativity over the film. WOM seem GREAT...
shows for tonight at my theater seem fine. My particular showing at 7:30 is packed.

It seems I was right when I said it would struggle to reach SOLOW's OS-C numbers. I'm absolutely devastated btw, never thought it would tank so hard.
Disappointing results so far, but I’m not willing to throw in the towel yet. Japan’s opening looks good, and China still might have a surprise for us.. we’ll see with the holiday over there for Saturday.
-
Only positive I can say with that 12.5 number is at least it’s only combined Thursday numbers from 45 territories with the remaining opening now without full weekend numbers...
definitely disappointing results thus far.
-
Decent preview. The heavy fan frontload thing is kind of silly to me. Shin Godzilla made under 2m total and was straight up released where only fans knew about it. Obviously yes the Thursday showings are fan oriented but we’ll see how today develops. It actually has good WOM from the GA.... so lets see how it plays out. Hopefully it can get over 60m for the weekend.

of course total. 3-day debut will be under 500m.
I’m thinking he meant through next weekend though. 800m yuan is 115m usd.. or are we saying just a 2x multiplier?

I’m in the same boat.. the experience of my showing was fantastic last night. People were CLAPPING at the end. Confused is a great word because the film is really just a non stop popcorn ride... perfect for the summer.
All we we can hope is that the people who enjoyed it push others to watch today and Sunday.....
