And this was foreseeable. Anyone with a brain could see that the release of this movie to theaters wouldn’t bear much fruit.

With about 2,750 dying a day and many people without food, movie going is not a priority at the moment. I am excited to see it and I think some are too, but not at the level it would have been otherwise.

They know. They're just playing stupid. Watch them try to extrapolate the current non existent domestic market to say that WW84 was never gonna make 200m in a non corona world

You underestimate how much this industry thrives just as much on reputation as it does on money. Many of these people aren't exactly "replaceable" when a lot of them are in high positions of power and can easily tell their friends and other people on the rise "don't work there." This applies to the entire showbiz industry, not just any one studio.

Nobody's gonna say no to a job. Especially when tens of millions and counting have lost theirs

Why did WB have to announce the entire 2021 slate being put on streaming all at once? Why couldn't they just take a case-by-case approach, deciding to put individual films on the dual streaming-and-theatrical release strategy depending on the COVID situation at the time of each release? The situation in late 2021 may be very different from early 2021, seems a bit premature to condemn those films to this strategy already.

The answer is clear: WB wanted to take advantage of the creative output of their partners to boost their own streaming service. It's self-dealing of the highest order.

I don't think there is any issue with putting films on streaming-and-theatrical because of COVID. What they did with Wonder Woman 84 is correct. But to do the same with the entire 2021 slate, unnecessarily ahead of time, just shows that their priority isn't these films but rather their own streaming service. Not to mention the way they disrespected content creators and artists by not even letting them know in advance. Its not only mismanaged, but unethical practice. And they will be made to face the consequences.

What consequences could they possibly face by angering creatives? 99% of them are replaceable. If they left they'd longer have to pay actors 10m+ to star in flops. I'd consider that a win

I understand not pitying the wealth of the higher ups, I personally don't either. That said I would like to point out that there tons of people that work for these films that aren't on nearly as high of a payscale, for whom these ripples through the industry directly affect as well. We don't know what the ramifications for this shell shock to have throughout the industry on creative or general operating levels yet.

    True

Im just venting. Recent experiences with rich people has me feeling pretty salty. Last thing I wanted to see/read is them acting like victims

You're right. Nolan's ego trip doesn't help though

Even if an exodus happens, nothing of value will be lost. None of these actors sell and all directors like Villeneuve do is make movies nobody gives 2 shits about

This is just rich people bitching they won't be as rich as previously thought. Fuck em!

They've already hurt themselves with all the bad press they've received from this so they've already lost.

Honestly feels like this is the biggest PR debacle a studio has ever faced. Pissing away hundreds of millions of dollars and potentially alienating relationships with the biggest names in Hollywood all to boost a streaming service that's been off to an inauspicious start.

Bad press from who? Surely not consumers. Just rich assholes pissy they're getting 5 mil instead of 10 mil. They'll get over their BS sooner or later

Fuck Nolan btw. Risking people's lives just to take advantage of his 20% cut. What a ----. Dude's ego is completely out of control

they don´t have much content for their entire 2021, and they need to keep their subscribers interested

that´s why i think some movies lives cruella, raya, or even some fox movies (if they truly create the adult section soon) could ended up on D+, like rumors suggest

i only doubt they will make this with their big tentpoles, unless there are no other choice

Disney doesn't really need new content. As long as they don't up the price and don't lose their family friendly content for whatever reason they'll be more than fine. Stuff like the Mandalorian probably doesn't even move the needle in the grand scheme of things. Disney didn't miss a beat after season 1 ended

They should be pissed at themselves for moving it to Xmas instead of just staying with the October date.  No one at the studios wanted to have the hard conversations until now and they are just starting to grasp there is no coming back to pre Covid.  With todays covid package talks don't be surprised to see even more moves towards streaming.  Theaters are not getting stimulus and there is no hint at all they will get one after inauguration either.

They should've just released it in late 2019. The decision to move it to 2020 gets more idiotic as time passes

I think this strategy would have made sense if WW had released at a similar time that Tenet did (That is assuming they're desperate to release WW this year). International markets were in a decent enough place to make some cash. US was/is a write-off so HBO MAX makes sense.

But now international markets are back in a pretty bad spot and WB are still committing to their release date. It just seems like they're not reading the room. Maybe they think Xmas+WW is going to give them a big boost on HBO MAX and that's worth the loss.

Pretty obvious that's what AT&T is hoping for

WB suits must be pissed. Spent 200m+ only to have their new boss come in and use said 200m+ as an ad for their streaming service lol

AT&T probably know one movie wouldn't keep these subs, but at least it could let them realize Max exists, which is more important right now considering those HBO subs who can use it for free don't even care about it.

Kinda hard for the average consumer to make heads out of HBO Now, HBO Go and HBO Max. The HBO name did more harm than good. Should've picked a different one

I have no idea what’s more accurate or better gauge but the the Batman trailer already has more views in about 24 hours on Twitter then both Joker trailers have. It also has like 125k more likes then the first joker trailer. Joker was definitely bigger on YouTube though for sure.

Joker on youtube was pretty nuts. The 2nd trailer has more views than the first one. When's the last time that happened?

The Buzz generated by the trailer for this movie is (at least) on the same level as the Joker imo ((it's bigger than I expected, they filmed only 25% of the film and they didn't have much to show), pretty good.

Joker was huge on youtube too tho. Not just twitter. Both trailers have north of 80m views with the 2nd being at 90m+ and both over 1m likes. I don't see this reaching said numbers. It's 2nd trailer as per usual won't be as big
