  1. GWTW holds the all-time ticket sales record, but I think Titanic absolutely holds the first-run record. GWTW's original roadshow/general run did not sell as many tickets, even in proportion to the smaller population of the time I don't know if it was AS insanely popular as Titanic was. (Since people went to the movies much more often, it didn't dominate the market in the same way.) It was huge, to be absolutely sure but I'm not sure it was "MOTHER OF GOD" epic like Titanic was. (It was probably the closest equivalent though, along with The Sound of Music, Star Wars, and E.T.'s original runs.) Also, initial roadshow runs of films like GWTW and The Sound of Music were priced in proportion to normal ticket prices about the equivalent of paying $30-40 for a movie ticket today. I'm not sure whether the 200 million lifetime admissions estimate for GWTW takes this into account?
  2. At least Keith didn't do a stupid pun like "Jurassic 'Rex' Records". Someone needs to apply for the BOM job soon...
  3. Aladdin would be great. In the States, Disney has acted like it doesn't exist for about the last decade (to the point where Europe had a Blu-Ray for a while, and we don't get it until October). It had an IMAX release planned for 2004, but was cancelled due to diminishing returns from the previous ones.
  4. What was the weekend thread that turned into pages upon pages of Pokemon, and led to the derailment policy? Also, the random daily thread that turned into the infamous live riff of Free Birds. Summer 2014 before GOTG was so boring, it seemed like every numbers thread was a new tangent.
  5. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Universal has released a comic book movie ANY year since 2008 (TIH and Hellboy II)
  6. The theater I'm at is doing fine. (I went to see JW and IO one more time before they start losing screens.) People are lined up at the BO. Maybe something is going on just in your town?
  7. Actually, Disney had two $100m OWs in 2010 (Alice/TS3), and Lionsgate+Summit had two in 2012 (THG/BD2). But you're right, nobody has had three. Even adjusted for inflation. (Inflation gives Paramount two in 2008, IM1/Indy 4)
  8. I have no idea what long-term WOM is going to be for Minions. My showing got rousing applause, but I left a showing of JW and passed a Minioms showing getting out, and overheard a parent asking their kid "was that the worst movie ever?" Or was it the other way around. Still, to hear that...
  9. Nemo wasn't the main character in Finding Nemo either, when you think about it. He was A main character, but the film was really more of Marlin's journey, wasn't it? And Dory was the breakout character, she appealed and endeared to everyone - giving her a bigger focus isn't like giving Mater a bigger focus, everyone loved Dory. This isn't like the Minions without Gru/Margo/Edith/Agnes, or the Penguins without Alex and Marty. There have been other sequels where the deuteragonist or breakout main supporting character got more into the forefront and it wasn't a "Mater in Cars 2" situation, haven't there?
  10. That's what I heard, too. Also, as I said, it was on a school week. Very few animated/family films open on a Wednesday outside of summer/holiday weeks, Shrek 2 seems to be a rare exception. (In terms of admissions, the biggest opening "school day/night" Wednesday for an animated kids/family film is actually Pokemon, and it only adjusts to $1m more than Shrek 2.) And don't doubt Nemo, Tele. Incredibles is popular among young adults (many of whom were kids when the original came out), but I think Nemo is still popular among today's kids in a way Incredibles isn't.
  11. Yes, but the problem with that is that if it breaks $121.7 but not the full OW with midnights, its true 3-day will still be lower due to the previews. (Though to be completely fair, previews for animated movies were not a huge thing then - back then, most of that business Minions did on Thursday would have occurred on Friday, and the rest would have been accounted for in additional Sat/Sun spillover.)
  12. Yes, that is exactly what I meant. As I just said, I was going to add clarification, but couldn't figure out how to say it (and know that by the time I would have finished editing, people would have replied to the original version).
  13. druv10, I was going to add a remark about Shrek 3 being one of the biggest "goodwill from the last breakout movie" OWs, but couldn't figure out a way to phrase it. You're right, it shows how big Shrek 2 was, and how much goodwill it had, and how anticipated Shrek 3 was. (I meant it was a beast on OW, after all.)
  14. If this still can't beat Shrek 3 even with inflation+3D+PLF, all it shows is how much of a beast Shrek 3 was. As I said before, my opinion is that Minions is cinematic cotton candy and is no more/less "deserving" of the record as Shrek 3 was.
  15. I find it interesting how the Minion voices have gone from three people in DM1 (Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud, Jemain Clement) to two in DM2 (Coffin and Renaud) to just Coffin in Minions, yet you can't really tell their voices apart.
  16. Minions is about as deserving of the record as Shrek 3 was. A good Disney/Pixar movie needs to take the record back. (Past record holders before Shrek 2 were Lion King, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Nemo)
  17. Also, I think Minions may be the first movie since Ferris Bueller's Day Off to have an actual Beatles recording of a Beatles song in it. It seems like most movies have only covers of Beatles songs, not the original versions.
  18. Oh, they will continue to do OK. This was bound to happen eventually. Nobody at Universal or Disney is crying. Your showing of Genisys could be like my Jurassic Park 3D weekday showing where I was literally the only person there.
  19. And it looks like Steve Coogan is quickly becoming the John Ratzenberger of Illumination. His name showed up in the Pets trailer too.
  20. Just got out of Minions (Century at Tanforan, near SFO Airport). I went to sit out the horrible Friday traffic I'd have to sit through at to get home if I had gone home at 6. (I work from home on Fridays, but we had a company picnic today so I am on the Peninsula.) It's harmless, but only mildly amusing. Felt like a 90-minute TV episode. Needed more Scarlet Overkill. I agree with the people who say Gru and the girls are the heart of the DM movies, take them away and you end up with kiddy fluff. I liked the environments (especially swingin' 1968 London), they look great for $75m. And Illumination's designs are very 60s to begin with (lots of women with flip hairdos in all their movies). So it looked nice, but was the cinematic equivalent of candy corn. Theater was pretty full, and got rousing applause. I walked out into the lobby and smack into a huge fucking line for another showing. So it looks like Rth is right, West Coast is cleaning up well. I am going to see JW and IO again this weekend, at least I know I don't have to deal with crowds.
  21. Yeah, I was thinking that actually. If not for 3D, would it have even been deemed successful enough for a sequel?
