GWTW holds the all-time ticket sales record, but I think Titanic absolutely holds the first-run record. GWTW's original roadshow/general run did not sell as many tickets, even in proportion to the smaller population of the time I don't know if it was AS insanely popular as Titanic was. (Since people went to the movies much more often, it didn't dominate the market in the same way.) It was huge, to be absolutely sure but I'm not sure it was "MOTHER OF GOD" epic like Titanic was. (It was probably the closest equivalent though, along with The Sound of Music, Star Wars, and E.T.'s original runs.) Also, initial roadshow runs of films like GWTW and The Sound of Music were priced in proportion to normal ticket prices about the equivalent of paying $30-40 for a movie ticket today. I'm not sure whether the 200 million lifetime admissions estimate for GWTW takes this into account?

Aladdin would be great. In the States, Disney has acted like it doesn't exist for about the last decade (to the point where Europe had a Blu-Ray for a while, and we don't get it until October). It had an IMAX release planned for 2004, but was cancelled due to diminishing returns from the previous ones.

Nemo wasn't the main character in Finding Nemo either, when you think about it. He was A main character, but the film was really more of Marlin's journey, wasn't it? And Dory was the breakout character, she appealed and endeared to everyone - giving her a bigger focus isn't like giving Mater a bigger focus, everyone loved Dory. This isn't like the Minions without Gru/Margo/Edith/Agnes, or the Penguins without Alex and Marty. There have been other sequels where the deuteragonist or breakout main supporting character got more into the forefront and it wasn't a "Mater in Cars 2" situation, haven't there?

That's what I heard, too. Also, as I said, it was on a school week. Very few animated/family films open on a Wednesday outside of summer/holiday weeks, Shrek 2 seems to be a rare exception. (In terms of admissions, the biggest opening "school day/night" Wednesday for an animated kids/family film is actually Pokemon, and it only adjusts to $1m more than Shrek 2.) And don't doubt Nemo, Tele. Incredibles is popular among young adults (many of whom were kids when the original came out), but I think Nemo is still popular among today's kids in a way Incredibles isn't.

Yes, but the problem with that is that if it breaks $121.7 but not the full OW with midnights, its true 3-day will still be lower due to the previews. (Though to be completely fair, previews for animated movies were not a huge thing then - back then, most of that business Minions did on Thursday would have occurred on Friday, and the rest would have been accounted for in additional Sat/Sun spillover.)

druv10, I was going to add a remark about Shrek 3 being one of the biggest "goodwill from the last breakout movie" OWs, but couldn't figure out a way to phrase it. You're right, it shows how big Shrek 2 was, and how much goodwill it had, and how anticipated Shrek 3 was. (I meant it was a beast on OW, after all.)

Just got out of Minions (Century at Tanforan, near SFO Airport). I went to sit out the horrible Friday traffic I'd have to sit through at to get home if I had gone home at 6. (I work from home on Fridays, but we had a company picnic today so I am on the Peninsula.) It's harmless, but only mildly amusing. Felt like a 90-minute TV episode. Needed more Scarlet Overkill. I agree with the people who say Gru and the girls are the heart of the DM movies, take them away and you end up with kiddy fluff. I liked the environments (especially swingin' 1968 London), they look great for $75m. And Illumination's designs are very 60s to begin with (lots of women with flip hairdos in all their movies). So it looked nice, but was the cinematic equivalent of candy corn. Theater was pretty full, and got rousing applause. I walked out into the lobby and smack into a huge fucking line for another showing. So it looks like Rth is right, West Coast is cleaning up well. I am going to see JW and IO again this weekend, at least I know I don't have to deal with crowds.
