we expect excellence, why wouldn't we?
Trust me on this one Jimbo. From what has been shared about DW, the concept of raising the bar is not one which he is, or ever has been familiar with.
That's why he also underestimates Jim's capacity on this. TGM doing billies is something every single Avatar fan is excited and happy about. It just makes that big billie target even higher.
It's about time Jim had some competition.

TGM delivering something we've never before seen and naturally the Avatar stans think it's no big deal and it can do better 🤣
Hoping for better is a foreign concept to you huh Deep Wang?

Folks, think about the level of cultural impact Elvis had. It will open to 200m.

What happens when a film as rewatchable as Avatar has a franchise size opener ($200m+). This is uncharted territory.
Uncharted territory is Jim's backyard.

Sad that it had to be this movie though, because now we have to endure insufferable idiots screaming about “wokeness”
Those idiots would cry no matter what happened. They're best ignored on all matters.

Honestly there's nothing that warms the heart more than a Disney flop
At this stage I'd take A2 imploding just to see the entire company brought down, let Paramount pick up the sequels for a buck.

What are we doing?
Its opening in the US in undeniably underwhelming, but its overseas debuts are outright terrible. $34.6m OS OW? That's horrendous for a $200m budget film. Many films with massive budgets save face or at least some face when they don't do well domestically by having respectable international runs.
You're talking about a movie that will likely cap out at $275m WW - flat out bomb. Honestly, the range is $250m-$290m but it's not sniffing $300m WW.

I don't know. I just know there was an article one time about it (and I don't know if it mentioned anything about a sequels BO prospects because it was so long ago), pointing out that it's weird how the BIGGEST MOVIE EVER left such a little imprint. So now that's a talking point that people harp on all the time. I probably said something about it in this very thread because it's so goddamn old lol.
I suspect this thread might be older than some of our newest users.

Shoot I didn't know there was a difference. Either way, if this is considered a success for Lightyear by some people, Kotm must've actually made a profit theatrically with a 177M opening at 170M budget compared to Lightyear's 85M opening on a 200M budget
I'd say a flop gets close to its total budget (prod+marketing) and a bomb misses it by a huge margin.

What you're saying is true for many movies, but I still don't really think it applies in this case. I did not see Hawthorne's gay romance being underplayed at all compared to if the character had been straight.
Fair enough, I can't judge at all, since that character isn't repping me. However, as a gay man I felt if her character HAD been a gay man I wouldn't have really seen that as 'representation'. Sure it's better than a lot of the tokenism we do see, but it's still heavily in the tokenism zone in my view - esp. when you watch the film and you can almost see that it's constructed in such a way that they could cut it out if they wished to.

$50 mil isn’t a flop for Lightyear but definitely a big underperformance. The hype wasn’t all that hot but $70m should have been doable.
Huh? It's 100% a flop. The real question at this point is whether it's a bomb or not.

The argument here seems to be that there should not be any minor LGBTQ characters, only major ones? Seems like having both would be a preferable option.
They make them gay with token gestures or scenes. They don't make them gay AS characters. It's pandering. They see it as a demographic to be tapped and that's what needs to change. The answer isn't as black and white as do/don't, but the cynical methods they're currently using are not helping at all.

Does that matter one iota when it comes to the box office prospects of the sequel. Also no.
Then why is it consistently brought up when discussing the sequels? And as I said - I actually believe it's potentially inversely proportional to Box Office performance now.

“Disney’s misses are sometimes better than other studio’s best hits,” says Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “Did they spend too much? Probably. But ‘Lightyear’ has all summer to play out.”
Wow. This is some high level cope.

Do we think CE is going to join the 'Can't carry a movie outside of the MCU' group of actors or is this a blip?
13 minutes ago, Eric Lightyear said:No offense, but they can keep their "inclusion" for all I care. All of Disney's gay characters are "likable, but still never say the 'G word' to avoid censorship" at best to "I didn't even know they were in the movie" at worst, all for capitalist greed purposes.
Preach sister. Tokenism has to end. They go hard or they go home.

Likelyhood: For me 30%. So yes, i think Avatar 2 has a better chance at 850M+ DOM than grossing 550M total or under.
What do you think happens to the forum if A2 does do over a billion domestic? Will IronJimbo finally be given a crown?

I put this in the weekend thread, but after watching the ending of TG2 yet again, I'm convinced it is the possibly the most thrilling and satisfying 3rd act of a movie I have ever seen. The emotion, cinematography, editing, score, sound effects and incredible real action knowing they are really in F-18's filming this makes it flat out edge of your seat white knuckle movie making.
I thought Titanic was my favorite third act of all time, but after seeing TGM for the 7th time I have to say I'm with you on this.

I think you're being too nice here. I can see why someone wouldn't think it's going to make $1b, they don't have the the absolute belief (like we do) in the quality of the film. However going as low as $500m domestic is borderline trollingThis may be the first time in my life I have ever been accused of being 'too nice'. Thanks Jimbo, that gave me my yearly chuckle.

Daaaamn Juby, $620m in the first 2 weeks? Some others in here are putting lower than that for the whole run.
Looking over the people who made the predictions gives you some insight into their predictive abilities. A lot of the folks who have been saying Avatar won't make over a billion are the same people who said TGM wouldn't do over 300M.

People never even tried to explain the link between cultural impact and box office, even when they use it to detract from Avatar 2. Kind of weirdI'd like to see what it actually means in their minds - if the concept is clear at all.
18 minutes ago, Ozymandias said:bruh, I know bumping this thread is part of your thing but nobody asked for a Solo movie without Harrison Ford(this was also right after Rogue One and TLJ were boring ass movies) and this cashgrab Lightyear spinoff didn't even have Tim Allen or Woody in it.
So Harrison Ford and Tim Allen are the icons and not the characters? Or they're inherent aspects of what makes them icons? Do you think Indiana Jones 5 will do massive amounts of money given it has such an ostensibly large "cultural impact"?
-
The more I think about it the more I think "cultural impact" is actually a poisoned chalice. Think about Han Solo, an iconic character, Buzz Lightyear, again an iconic character. Huge cultural impact.
Yet they've both shown they're box office bombs. They can't move beyond the craters in culture they themselves have created, even when they're beloved.
I think JC cutting the head off of the hydra and letting everything sleep for a decade has been a master stroke.
