What more can you say about the incredible run of TGM. Biggest 4th Sunday ever, 2nd biggest 4th weekend of all time, 600m and 1.1 billion WW locked. It has a legit shot at reaching all time top 10 in the US, UK and Oz. What a run.
An absolute phenomenon. Tom Cruise is the man.

Paramount should prep Maverick for 3D conversion to release after Avatar 2 to get to 800m domestic
This is actually not a bad idea. I'd love to see TGM in 3D. Those scenes in the canyon would be intense.

It is starting!

Fair point.

Sigh. I couldn't agree with this more. Absolutely fucking asinine ESPECIALLY with Turning Red when Spidey was making bank, Sing did 160M+ DOM before March. Should've been in theaters exclusively on March 11th. Period. Would've done well.
And, yes! Raya the Last Dragon did the 29.99 and in theaters when the pandemic was MUCH worse. Jungle Cruise did the same model and released just a month ago Luca premiered for free on Disney+ with a subscription. You take arguably your best brand (Pixar) then make those the movies that go to Disney+ for free with a sub and pretty much everything else is either 29.99/theatrical 45 to 60 day window or 45 to 60 day window and no streaming option at all? It's completely insane. Made Pixar feel like one of their streaming shows or a direct to video and it's friggin' Pixar. I still can't believe the handling of Luca and especially Turning Red.
@EmpireCity has been vindicated again.

But man, to follow Top Guns run is so awesome. Reminds me why i like to spend quite a bit of my freetime with following BO numbers. Epic runs like this one make it just so much fun.
It's exactly this that makes it fun.

Yep. There is still an opportunity for him and WB to "save" all of this. Have him show up, clarify what is going on, apologize profusely and then head straight to rehab and then stay off the radar completely for the next 12 months. Let his co-stars promote the movie and then move on from him.
Agreed. In fact it could even work in their favour, people love a come back story. However, I'm not confident at this stage.

I have no idea why everyone thinks it's going to be delayed, it very clearly is not. It's five months out.
I mean Avatar is further out and we have a teaser + poster. Why the delay on any marketing?

Guys, we're gonna have to be the JC of this forum if we're gonna keep pushing the limits and get this thread to 2000 pages before the film opens. The hard and fast formula of the thread is "page count x 2M = worldwide dollars".
Can you imagine? What's the current record of most pages before a movie opens? BvS?

I'm guessing trailer either today or tomorrow. With how close we are to Love and Thunder plus Juneteenth, it'd be a great time to drop it.
Agreed. If we don't see something soon (within a couple of weeks), I fully expect it to be delayed.

The best thing about this weekend is the industry consensus is growing that Bob Chapek has returned Disney to the late 90's and 00's when their direct to video animation severly damaged their brand in a way that was only recovered by Pixar first saving it and then subsequently Disney Animation got its groove back with quality theatrical releases.
Pixar films for over 20 years Pixar films were highly anticipated and a level of quality that was unmatched. In 2 years Bob Chapek and Kareem Daniel have flushed that down the toilet and made it something similar to waiting for Lilo and Stitch: Stitch Has A Glitch or Bambi II to hit DVD and distract your kids with for a couple of hours and forget it.
LOL that ol' Bob / Kareem / Disney are about to get kicked in the teeth in 2022 by movies like Sonic 2 and Minions: The Rise of Gru while their $200m budget Pixar film is an afterthought.
They need to bring back Iger.

Also Jim is the icon, not Avatar (not yet anyway). DIS couldn't drag him down a slope.

Does it? He's not taking his time, he's being doing otherthings to help the enviroment.
I was fortunate enough to attend a talk by Nicola Beaumont at PML and she openly said that they'd be 10 years behind where they are now on both Marine Systems Modelling and on their Ocean Acidification work were it not for the support of JC.
They're on the south coast Jimbo and very welcoming to visitors, if you find yourself in that area I'd suggest a visit. The sheer amount of projects they're working on is astounding and provides some hope that we may yet 'turn the tide'.

You have to hand it to DIS, their ability to drag iconic characters through the mud is almost impressive.

Yeah I did understand what you meant. I could have pointed out that he hasn't spent 13yrs making Avatar sequels and he's actually spent most of that time working on enviromental projects outside of filmmaking but I thought you were just making a joke
A lot of people find his interdisciplinary mastery difficult to grasp. They usually have one job, focus on one thing. Whereas with people like Jim, who is ostensibly a polymath, and near-Billionaire, he has both the time, and intelligence to dedicate himself to multiple things.
It's why you'll see a lot of people making that error in thinking he has spent the last 13 years making these movies, when he spent 2 of the 3 years immediately after '09 on the challenger deep expedition. The fact that even that level of understanding that someone could do that many different things escapes people shows you the size of the gulf between Cameron and his detractors.

Just found out about what Cruise said about regarding making a Top Gun sequel post-Born on the 4th of July (greatest anti-war film of all time). https://gizmodo.com/tom-cruise-top-gun-sequel-playboy-opinion-1986-propagan-1848858326
Cruise: They are to different things. Top Gun is a joy ride and shouldn’t be looked at beyond that. Born is about real people and real events. Top Gun should be looked at as going on Space Mountain—it’s like a simple fairy tale.
I'd bet he'd say the same thing about TGM.

It'll make lots of money for sure. Question now is how much pull the Minions still have years later.
At this stage they're almost (if not already) iconic.

Yes there is. It's an objective fact that everything is better when you add gayness to it. Make everything gay. Every single all the things.
This is the entire reason Titanic only gets 99/100 from me. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it needed a big Irish bear to really be perfect.
4 hours ago, IronJimbo said:Yes same sex na'vi relationship exists in the lore
Correct. They also have an analogy to two-spirit people - it's the reason why they're not totally afraid of Jake and the Avatar's in the first place. They're familiar with the concept of one's brain being different from one's body (to the extent Eywa has done so in the past anyway).
4 hours ago, Elessar said:Sure, the bulk of his endeavours outside of filmmaking might be related to environmental protection in recent years but i can't remember him ever saying humanity should basically put a stop to space exploration.
If you're really interested in this check out his work with the Plymouth Marine Labs and OceanX (for current projects he's working on). Jimbo is correct, he basically said that he's glad NASA etc. are still pushing for that tier of exploration but that we need a greater focus and push on saving the environment we do have. The work he has done with Barry Didato, Ray Dalio, and a host of others over the past decade+ is in the order of billions of USD in R&D and policy work for environmental causes.

With a shortened window, studios can explore a big theatrical title on their streaming service while the movie is still fresh in people's minds, without sacrificing the bulk of what they make in ticket sales, which is in those first 45 days. It's been the perfect strategy to boost the streaming side of their business without hurting significantly their theatrical business.
If people dodge seeing it in the theatre knowing they can catch it on streaming then it is hurting the business.

This whole project was poorly conceived. No one wants a realistic Buzz movie. I can’t believe the lengths Disney will go to milk these franchises.
I don't think we've seen the bottom of the barrel yet either.

Also, there is nothing in the world for movies like the entire theatrical infrastructure to give clout and legitimacy to movies. That is why movies that release in theaters with exclusive windows stay around in the minds of the public and on the radar compared to movies that go right to streaming that are watched and forgotten almost instantly.
There is nothing like a proper press tour to really ingrain a movie in the mind of the public. Seeing those jets at the TGM premiere will certainly stick in my mind far better than any movie I ever heard of on a streaming service.
