Can we stop pretending Jolie has great directing talent and just hasn't gotten the right material now?

No one is saying this lol. I think she clearly has talent, she just can't maintain it throughout two hours. She is a mess, but occasionally has a very inspired moment.

On the art house side of things, this is my pick of the year so far. It's deeply affecting and nothing felt contrived despite the subject matter. It won't leave you.

Could Tremblay actually get a nomination? I can't conceive of this movie without him.

He is getting a lot of buzz. I'm pissed it is major category fraud, but it'd be super neat if he did!

Yes Daniels would probably be my top choice. director may not be a lock. but considering how everyone's performances was fantastic, I feel he deserves it , isn't that the directors main goal to get good performances? and as in bad press do you mean underperformance box office wise? cause that shouldn't really factor into weather it gets nominated or not. not imo anyway.

If it quietly underperformed, I'd agree. The trades really beat the hell out of it though. The BP and BD races are super fluid this year, so I don't think it'll help.

Will I think probably only one of them will get the nomination for supporting actor, maybe two. but they all were great so it's hard choosing one. and I do believe Jobs is a lock, close to it anyway. and this is my opinion, and based on the reception of films I've seen could change as I see more. and I'm aware I may not be 100% accurate.

I think it will get a picture nomination too, but the bad press could hurt it. Director is looking less likely because of everything and the critiques that that is the weakest elements.

Daniels would be my pick. He is really killer in the role, but the category is so stacked with Spotlight likely earning two noms, Joy contending for two noms and a shitton of dudes in The Hateful Eight.

  5. Most of your locks are far from, such as Boyle in director and even Steve Jobs in picture.

The supporting actor performances aren't going to get recognized in Steve Jobs because they will cause major vote splitting. Furthermore, the way the film works actually structurally disallows for a standout performance because they come and go in such measured ways. They are like a random obstacle presented for Jobs rather than a comprehensive part of his development.

The big difference is there is almost always far more competition among Best Actor than Best Actress because there are far more lead and meaty roles for actors.

Not this year! The best actress race is more string especially, although they both only have about 7 or 8 performance contending for now. The actor race will have more filled noms than actress though.

If you want to ask someone to elaborate, then you know, actually ask that, instead of telling them what they think is impossible to support with rational thought.

Admittedly, my post was pompous, but we all do that from time-to-time. I just need to be able to come across more friendly in writing I suppose. Sorry if I offended anyone

Regardless, Blanchett has killed it in three roles this year. She is nothing short of a revelation. <3

Awfully pretentious post. Who gives a shit if Ozymandias' opinions are "upheld by the industry or the critics?" It's not as if critics are spitting on The Martian. A lot of very intelligent people (not least astronauts and scientists themselves) have embraced the movie as much or more than Gravity.

And the point about Gravity's script weakness is bang-on. The movie is visually breathtaking, well-paced, exciting, you name it. But the script is often juvenile. Clooney's character is insufferable and completely unrealistic for an astronaut. And some of Bullock's lines once she's alone are just insipid (the dead daughter bit, "no one ever taught me to pray" or the highly original "it's been a helluva a ride. No harm, no foul!").

I'm not disagreeing with Ozy's opinion on the film, just with Ozy's prediction methods. I don't remember Gravity that much at all. All I am saying is that Gravity is an "achievement" and films like that get rewarded whereas no one (or very few) is suggesting that The Martian brings anything new to the table besides being a great movie. I don't have a particular affinity for either movie, but Gravity's huge amount of nominations speaks for itself. It was a huge testemant of what can be done on he big screen and it still one of the best recieved films of the decade. This is a stronger year and if the late release films break out as many expect them to, then The Martian will get buried faster than Spotlight.

And we are predicting The Oscars so we have to take personal preference out and listen to the industry and critics. I'm not disagreeing or challenging Ozy's opinion, I am just saying that predicting from the heart is pointless and that is what we all like to do, myself included. The biggest proof of this will be when The Danish Girl gets a ton of noms. :P

Is this another of those times where someone's opinion on a film being better than one of your darlings makes no sense to you? Because it's starting to be a noticeable array of blinders you got ready to wear.

Isn't this a board to discuss films? I don't understand how me asking someone to elaborate on why they prefer a film is so off-limits? Or even challenging tastes: I'm trying to start a conversation not be a dick, but maybe it comes off too pointed and condescending. That's isn't my intention!

Like I said, I loved Truth and is higher on my list of 2015 films than Spotlight. But, when it comes to awards potentials there are no blinders for Truth. It isn't happening and I think everyone agrees with that.

Now, The Martian I'll admit I might be fighting it a little too hard. ;)

Gravity wasn't anything more than entertainment, it was just a 90 minute technical showcase on a very pedestrian script and in 2013 it was considered a 2-horse race between Gravity and 12YAS for BP.  Unlike that movie, The Martian does have a smart and dynamic ensemble script with 3 different stories going on simultaneously(NASA/JPL on Earth, the Hermes crew in space, and Watney on Mars) that could (and probably will) get Drew Goddard nominated for adapted screenplay.  Thematically, it is a bit timely in a year with space exploration in the news more than usual.   And does anyone honestly believe Sandra Bullock was better in Gravity than Matt Damon was in The Martian?  I'm not ready to call it the frontrunner like some pundits are right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up emerging as the frontrunner later on in a relatively weak year.  And Star Wars(unless its somehow better than Empire Strikes Back)/Mad Max have 0 chance of winning.  And I don't think a Quentin Tarantino movie is ever going to win BP.

You do understand that your view on Gravity is not upheld by the industry or the critics? You are saying this as if they are facts but clearly don't understand how much more of a landmark Gravity was over The Martian. Just because you have a preference doesn't mean anything-- they are completely different and the races are hugely different.

  11. While watching this film I was captivated but not impressed until the third act which draws some gorgeous parallels to the beginning and really illustrates the similar plights of many immigrants.

This film's main selling point is charm and it had plenty to go around. Ronan and Cohen are lovely and play real, normal people, which I love.

I didn't realize how much I loved this film until a couple hours after I finished it and it had left a big smile on my face.

I think there is just enough beyond the surface of the cutesy, charming story to really warrant this a pretty great film.

    As opposed to Spotlight?  Yawn.

I think its highly unlikely they'd give BP or BD to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu 2 years in a row.

I don't either, but if it a masterpiece and everything else fails, The Revenant could surprise and this coming from someone not excited for the film at all.

Well I haven't seen Spotlight so I wouldn't know. But The Martian is basically very well-executed light entertainment. It doesn't have more ambition than that, doesn't really care about interesting themes, isn't in any way innovative visually, it isn't much of an acting or writing showcase, it doesn't resurrect a dead genre like Gladiator (whose win for Best Picture I'm actually pretty cool with). Which is all fine because the movie succeeds at what it wants to do. But I don't see anything award-worthy there. I'm surprised it's even supposed to be a serious contender for nominations. Even as far as entertainment goes, Mad Max already has it beat in every department. Star Wars might, too.

Amen! It is just good, unremarkable film. I don't get it...

That statement is basically stating that the Academy is completely pretentious and will not nominate genre films no matter how good they are, because they are biased against the genre, thus a completely bogus award ceremony that means nothing. which I do believe that is partially true in case of BP anyways. but then how did Star Wars, Avatar, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Up, and Toy Story 3 get nominated? I also belive that Star Trek 09, was in the top 15 for a nomination that year and DK, was just barely missed out.

I mean, everyone knows Dark Knight was one out which is why they made the rule-- to get genre films in.

I remember reading something saying ST09 was very close to a BP nom and there is a lot of speculation saying it was close to BD too.

  14. Halba, have you ever watched the Oscars? Because every comment you make is just more and more obtuse.

I really don't want to give a spot to the The Marian because it is so mediocre, but out of what've I'd see an argument for it being the front runner is totally reasonable.

This is a weird year. Usually there has been so much more clarity.
