  1. But we have seen in the past a lot of movies nommed despite a dificult subject matter and a dark/cold approach. It's difficult to say when they're going to support a movie.

Like what? Winter Bones, a total anomaly?

I'm just saying, Beasts of No Nation had so many thing going against and I'm skeptical to believe it even had the intention of being some awards-player.

  2. How about subject matter and its approach? Ultimately two (arguably three if you are listening to the pundits) titles that seemed they could make a splash this year have fallen through because they are too dark or cold: Beasts of No Nation, Son of Saul and (in coldness) Carol.

That seems to harm Beasts Oscar chances coming out of the gates. Even when it was buzzing a bit people would shut it down for these reasons.

  3. 1. Brie Larson, Room

    2. Cate Blanchett, Carol

    3. Jennifer Lawrence, Joy

    4. Saiorse Ronan, Brooklyn

    5. Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years

    6. Carey Mulligan, Suffagette

That's how the race is right now.

Also, AMPAS could not accept Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander's fraud category and push them to lead.

That would shake things a little.

AMPAS usually don't have problems accepting category fraud. The fact that critics are buying it further points to how easy of a sell their frauds will be.

  4. There is a rule against having 2 nominations for acting in the same category.

Yup. I bet Blanchett gets double Globes noms though.

IMO, 45 Years isn't going to get lost. It has been a festival darling and will be a special presentation at AFI. Also, it could get in for screenplay and Supporting Actor. It won't, but it'll be close on both accords. Rampling has a really strong narrative and is going to get so many critic awards too. She might not even been the last one in. I would have her more likely to get a nom than Ronan, but I see both of them in.

Mulligan seems like a BAFTA only girl.

  5. Some people are saying its really good but lacks the "Spielberg magic". It's hard to describe what it is, but you guys know what I'm talking about when I mention JP, ET, Private Ryan... Does bridge of spies have hints of that "magic"?

It is very handsomely made and overall a great addition to his oeuvre. It has some really strong moments and is just very well done. The script has a lot of finesse via The Coen Brothers, but a lot of uneven humor.

I don't know. The Spielberg sentimentality is certainly there, especially for the worst.

War Horse is weak and Lincoln is incredible so...

  6. The kind of movie where for the first hour I'm like "oh shit, I'm watching a really great movie" and then for the second hour I realise "oh ok, I'm just watching a pretty good movie" and then it sort of peters out at the end.

The kid is great though. That last speech he gives to that counsellor is like whoa.

Initially I thought it "petered out" too, but that epilogue really sticks with me. And the scene where Agu is daydreaming and everything turns purple.

I have a lot of thoughts about this film. I'm having a review that I wrote this morning published tomorrow. But since then, I've thought of even more reasons I've loved it.

  7. Agu's monologue, followed by that last scene gave me chills.

I know there's a lot of politics that go into these awards and it's probably a longshot considering this was released on Netflix and there's already a backlash about it, but man, Idris Elba deserves an Oscar for this.

Elba could get in. I think the problem is that it is too dark rather than that it is Netflix.
