How about subject matter and its approach? Ultimately two (arguably three if you are listening to the pundits) titles that seemed they could make a splash this year have fallen through because they are too dark or cold: Beasts of No Nation, Son of Saul and (in coldness) Carol.
That seems to harm Beasts Oscar chances coming out of the gates. Even when it was buzzing a bit people would shut it down for these reasons.
-
Beasts of No Nation's problem is its subject matter. That on top of the streaming handicap made it DOA.
PS What a masterpiece. This film is amazing and I hope it can find its place in cinema history. It is so calculated in its approach and layered juxtaposition. Genius genius genius.

1. Brie Larson, Room
2. Cate Blanchett, Carol
3. Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
4. Saiorse Ronan, Brooklyn
5. Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
6. Carey Mulligan, Suffagette
That's how the race is right now.
Also, AMPAS could not accept Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander's fraud category and push them to lead.
That would shake things a little.
AMPAS usually don't have problems accepting category fraud. The fact that critics are buying it further points to how easy of a sell their frauds will be.

Room seems to have that same grey, uncinematic TV movie look as Frank did.
It is fine. The direction and cinematography's mediocrity are made up for by the story and performances. It is a solid 3/4, B movie.
-
Wish Room's PTA was higher.

Dumb rule too.
Absolutely.

Yup. I bet Blanchett gets double Globes noms though. There is a rule against having 2 nominations for acting in the same category.
IMO, 45 Years isn't going to get lost. It has been a festival darling and will be a special presentation at AFI. Also, it could get in for screenplay and Supporting Actor. It won't, but it'll be close on both accords. Rampling has a really strong narrative and is going to get so many critic awards too. She might not even been the last one in. I would have her more likely to get a nom than Ronan, but I see both of them in.
Mulligan seems like a BAFTA only girl.

Box Office isn't even close to one of the reasons Beasts will miss.

You have to be heartless to call it sickeningly sweet.
Be nice lol. Over sentimentality is a huge pet peeve of mine.
And of course neither Sculley or Jobs are actual bad guys. That's not how real life works. But Jobs is the most asshole is of the cast and his redemption is all centered around his relationship with Joanna.
-
Out of interest, is John Sculley portayed as the 'bad guy'? because I've read in interviews that he regretted the falling out between himself and Jobs and I think he was only doing what was best for the company and the shareholders.
Jobs is portrayed as the bad guy haha.

Have you seen it? What were your thoughts?pretty much as good as lincoln. around same RT score, lincoln slightly higher ave rating at 8.0/10 and higher on metacritic by a few points.
-
It feels made by Spielberg to me
The sentimentality is thankfully smaller than it was in Lincoln, and when it's in this one, it really works
I found the last ten minutes a little agonizing though.

It is very handsomely made and overall a great addition to his oeuvre. It has some really strong moments and is just very well done. The script has a lot of finesse via The Coen Brothers, but a lot of uneven humor. Some people are saying its really good but lacks the "Spielberg magic". It's hard to describe what it is, but you guys know what I'm talking about when I mention JP, ET, Private Ryan... Does bridge of spies have hints of that "magic"?
I don't know. The Spielberg sentimentality is certainly there, especially for the worst.
War Horse is weak and Lincoln is incredible so...

The kind of movie where for the first hour I'm like "oh shit, I'm watching a really great movie" and then for the second hour I realise "oh ok, I'm just watching a pretty good movie" and then it sort of peters out at the end.
The kid is great though. That last speech he gives to that counsellor is like whoa.
Initially I thought it "petered out" too, but that epilogue really sticks with me. And the scene where Agu is daydreaming and everything turns purple.
I have a lot of thoughts about this film. I'm having a review that I wrote this morning published tomorrow. But since then, I've thought of even more reasons I've loved it.

My full review: http://bit.ly/1VWIve6
Overall, mixed as hell. Thought Boyle rose to the occasion and loved it as a technical accomplishment. Honestly, I thought Sorkin was a weak link.
The end blows lol.

Agu's monologue, followed by that last scene gave me chills.
I know there's a lot of politics that go into these awards and it's probably a longshot considering this was released on Netflix and there's already a backlash about it, but man, Idris Elba deserves an Oscar for this.
Elba could get in. I think the problem is that it is too dark rather than that it is Netflix.
-
Everyone caught Beasts of No Nation on Netflix, right?
I'm still trying to gain my breath. That was INTENSE.
Yeah. Really amazing. That last scene was so powerful.
-
Yup. And minus the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War is one of the least interesting conflicts in American history.
Agree to disagree. The Cold War is fascinating.

wat
I can't think of any that immediately strike me as better. I thought maybe Her, but I'll have to reflect at a later time.

Masterpiece. Attah might have the strongest male performance of the 2010s.
-
Holy shit. Attah really deserves this. Best male performance in the past few years. He is stunning.
Too bad Beasts of No Nations is getting nowhere near the Oscars.
-
Jolie is totally going to get a best actress nom for this and become some frontrunner, isn't she?

Like what? Winter Bones, a total anomaly?
I'm just saying, Beasts of No Nation had so many thing going against and I'm skeptical to believe it even had the intention of being some awards-player.
