This is no confirmation that they're using the COBRA KAI universe, btw...  Just because the guys were consulted...

Warner Bros. talked to the SMALLVILLE people while Superman Returns was being prepped, as well...but of course that movie was its own universe...

...And maybe SONY can't use anything from COBRA KAI, anyway...NETFLIX might own the creative materials.

  2. Of course Marvel in all likelihood will make one more attempt (for the first time, from their own creative control) at FF... but if this one doesn't work out, I expect the property to go into hyper-sleep for a couple decades. 😄  But seriously, call me when production starts. 😄  Like I said, after this past year, Marvel/Disney are obviously now looking very closely at all upcoming projects (the TV projects upheavals have obviously been reported about, already), and they won't be pressing the green light on anything until they're sure they're absolutely ready for prime-time.  They already missed the golden "2024" date for FF, sadly...

  3. ...If it ever actually gets made and released.  At the very least, I'll be surprised if the release date doesn't change...again.  Out in less than 16 months and they haven't even started shooting, yet?  Call me skeptical, but this property of course has a...storied history in film.  (Especially after Marvel's disappointing 2023, I expect some changes and resets across the board...)

Are people just making shit up now?

There isn't some secret reason why he dropped out: the new filming schedule conflicts with his. Why is that so implausible to you guys? Christ. Not everything is secretly a conspiracy.

Do you know anything about Hollywood history?  There is *always* another reason behind whatever is said in PR/press releases.  *Especially* when they say "that was the only reason."  "Scheduling Conflicts" has been synonymous as "creative disagreements" forever.  And in Yuen's particular case, he obviously has more artistically valuable offers on the table...

Serious question to anyone who was following BO back then, DID Smallville in any way impact Superman Returns reception? Were there Welling fans vs. Routh fans flame wars? Did anyone consider it as a factor for SR underperformance coz ppl were comparing the two?

Yes, to a degree.  But I don't know if it was a categorizable huge factor in the performance of the movie -- that was merely down to the malaise of the movie, itself...and of course the reaction to *that* costume...and its muddled story/continuity...

But @filmnerdjamie was around the original SuperHeroHype forums at that time, and can attest to some of this back-and-forth discussion amongst the fanbases... (I know you were there, but I'm not sure you know who *I* am...) 😉

Welling had previously met with Brett Ratner (a previous possible director for Superman) but was always adamant in published quotes that if the movie happened, SMALLVILLE would have to end.  And no one wanted that, as it was making too much money!  The show remained on the air five years post-Superman Returns, and remains a cultural touchstone of its time.  It is rumored to be one of the most monetarily successful TV shows Warner Bros. ever produced...possibly generating hundreds of millions of dollars in profit.  And yes, the show's legacy fanbase and support dwarfs Superman Returns by far.

Superman & Lois is clearly what Warner Bros./The CW wanted as a loose follow-up to SMALLVILLE; and (I have no evidence for this, but) I would be very surprised if they didn't offer it to Welling (Clark) and Durance (Lois) first.  But Welling is obviously not interested (his CRISIS cameo was very Meta in how it commented on his disinterest in playing into people's expectations -- and I loved it for that), and Durance obviously couldn't/wouldn't do it without Welling.

To get this back to movies, it must also be reiterated that even Snyder understood SMALLVILLE's impact by inserting into MoS not only numerous nods to the show within the visual/story iconography...but even a couple of character actors who had appeared on the show, as well!

I wouldn’t expect this to make as much as The Batman by simple virtue of the fact that Bats has consistently been the bigger moneymaker since the late 80s. I don’t know why people keep forgetting this. Just because Superman is seen as the quintessential superhero doesn’t mean he’s the one who sells the best.

He sells best...on TV, over the years, that's for sure.

Kevin Spacey has not been welcomed by the European industry. Just wanted to make that clear.

Yep.  He's only grabbed a few roles in fringe/independent invested productions that are unlikely to make any big impact culturally or on any box office.  Everyone in the industry has known for decades what kind of a problem he is...he was shielded for years by monetarily-successful people like Bryan Singer (who's finally been ousted from the industry, himself), but there seem to be enough higher-ups now who aren't willing to tolerate it any more.

A sucesfful movie over 30 years ago whose fanbase is  a little too old for buying merchandise. Oh, they will merchandise the hell out of hte movie, but if it dissapoints at the box office, the merch will not sell all that well.

Excuse you, who else is in this movie? 😄  Jenna Ortega, that's who.  WEDNESDAY crossover audience, for sure...

This is just theory and speculation, for me JL opened poorly because it had a terrible marketing campaign, the movie looked progressively worse with each new trailer. We will not agree on the reason JL opened poorly. But we can all look at the numbers and see that MOS, BVS and SS were very profitable at the box office, and had a huge number of ticket sales, which means they also continued to make big profit in the post-theatrical market. These were objectively financial hits for WB.

Because of course JL was getting progressively worse with each passing month behind-the-scenes!  Jeff Robinov at WB projected that MOS would make $1 Billion.  So everything after that was downhill.  BvS's opening weekend torpedoed its possible reception (the first live-action team-up of World's Finest had the potential to make $2 Billion).  SS somehow...OK, I'll give you that...I still can't explain the success of that one!

Black Adam ($390 million) is the highest grossing movie since the first Aquaman ($1.1 billion). If you ask me, The Rock really changed the hierarchy of DC. James Gunn could really use his star power and creative prowess right about now, maybe he should show up in Superman Legacy to revive this fading franchise.

You aren't Dany Garcia, are you??  😄

Even though I enjoyed this movie, I agree with the ending part of the consensus. This movie played insanely safe in every department. It's very clear the crew was afraid of taking any kind of risk. However, it was still much better than what I thought it would be. It's better than a lot of movies I've watched lately. I'm actually surprised. James Wan really has talent and the crew really did what they could.

We can assume in this case that numerous "playing it safe" bits may have been studio-mandated reshoots, as we seem to have enough evidence that this movie went through multiple iterations beyond its original conception.

You know it's bad when fanboy critics like Jeremy Jahns hate it. DC brand is at its worst, must suck to be James Gunn at the moment.

Why?  Gunn had nothing to do with these movies.  Let's wait and see how his own take goes...and whatever happens with SUPERMAN (barring an outright bomb), I think whoever is heading Warner Bros. at that point will likely allow him a few movies to see how his train rolls on the tracks after the lingering toxicity of the last few years of the DCEU.

Superman Legacy probably won't make a lot of money with all the baggage from a shitty 10 year DCEU that came before it, but given the writer/director doing it, it will likely be a much better movie than anything that came before it.  It'll be like Star Trek 09 and X-Men: First Class where they didn't exactly make a lot of money but were liked enough by audiences and critics for studios to make sequels.

...But FOX didn't even have enough confidence in FIRST CLASS's performance to not bring back the original cast and director right away for DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.  But yes, generally agree with you...unless Warner/Paramount(?) is more interested in having Kal-El meet Captain Kirk for a sequel!  😄

Edit: dont let actors write script for a big budget movie unless they have history of being a writer. I am surprised WB decided to take Mamoa's treatment and made this movie. not sure why Wan did it. It destroys your reputation doing something for paycheck.

Momoa said publicly sometime earlier that the studio decided to change/reshoot the whole second half/or at least half of his original script ideas.  So no, it isn't all Momoa's story.

Denzel wouldn’t go near a Marvel movie. It took him the majority of his career to even agree to do a sequel with the Equalizer films, so he’s hardly going to sign up for a multi-film Marvel contract.

I also wouldn’t want an actor of his talent to waste his remaining years on Marvel movies either…

Hear me out: Denzel as the Beyonder!  Sure, he's probably not interested in another multi-film franchise, but this character would probably only be in Secret Wars I&II and perhaps a teasing cameo beforehand.  Denzel does seem in more of an "action" mode lately, too (Equalizer, Gladiator 2, Hannibal).  I could definitely see it happening!

I too think KANG is out as a character, and I think it was apparent from the moment Marvel hired Waldron as the new screenwriter of AVENGERS 5.

  15. I put only a 60/40 on Reeves' Batman sequel going ahead.  My gut is telling me that they might just let it be a one-off.  Either way, I'm sure Reeves is not 100% happy about having another Batman floating around, just as rumors indicated Nolan wasn't when George Miller almost made his "Justice League" during the Dark Knight trilogy... And of course it was going to happen again with Affleck and Keaton, but nixed...and Keaton's became a one-off appearance.  They still have yet to test this theory as an ongoing concept...

  16. Gunn has a very difficult PR game to play right now; the perils of exiting a fractured multi-film franchise with a small but extremely devoted following, including numerous actors who felt they never got to fully play out their character arcs, and the mandate of starting a new universe populated by some of those same characters.  The pressure on his 'Superman' to prove his vision will be enormous.  I predict there will be no neck-breaking...at least, not by Superman, himself. 😉  "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you're never going to please all of the people all of the time."  -- my Grandma.
