Frozen sputtered out about reaching 10 million admissions in early March because Disney decided to release the movie on VOD immediately afterwards. The movie performed really well on VOD, topping the charts for 4 weeks and killing off a lot of demand to see the movie in cinemas.

Same thing happened in Japan with early home release. Probably cost the movie at least $30 million theatrically, but it did go on to become the best selling Blu-ray there.

It's a joke because nobody in their right mind should take this map seriously lol

Let's just be honest about this, the map is ridiculous and is obviously not meant to be realistic at all. I don't for 1 second think that the people who made this map was thinking about the Geopolitics of Asia. frankly If WB knew this silly map would be such an issue, they probably would not have even had the scene in the movie in the first place and It definitely would have not been in their trailers if they thought it was going to cause them some PR problems

This can't seriously be the map causing issues, right? Where even is the offending line on this map? That squiggle east of that fictional Asian landmass? That looks nothing like the real nine-dash line. It's not even 9 dashes and looks more like navigational route markers. You can see another similar line near what looks like Greenland. Makes me think there has to be another map in the movie that we are not aware of.

Inside Out had 4.97m admissions, and tbh right now that's looking like the floor

That would be an incredible achievement. Only 4 animated films have ever crossed 5 million admissions. Suzume, Kung Fu Panda 2, and then the two Frozens with over 10 million admissions each.

That's actually a solid hold for The Flash, keeping streak of >$1 million alive for one more day. Though it's always had a large boost from Discount Tuesday so the Wednesday drop is likely to be steep like usual.

We don't know that. It could also be a case when The Philippines contributes more than China just like what it did with THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Even with TLM being a breakout, it grossed like $6 million in Philippines. And in Vietnam, TLM grossed like $0.5 million so doubt Barbie would have been that much higher. But you are right that anything can happen.

Philippines is as important as Indonesia/Malaysia or (Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia Combined). It's the biggest box office territory in Southeast Asia (Filipino also additionally supports Hollywood over Local Films). You all know about MCUs (especially Philippines' contribution to Avengers: Endgame &Disney's Live action adaptions.

I'm aware. I just don't think Barbie would have appealed to those markets even if it wasn't banned. American humor usually doesn't work in Asia.

unfortunately being banned in some Asian countries because they’re taking offence to a …. Map.

Vietnam and it looks like potentially Philippines so far.

It’s unfortunate but the box office impact will be minimal. Probably would have grossed sub-$5 million combined if released normally.

I think Elio has the problem of being an animated movie that takes place in the espace. And we have seen that all of them have failed: treasure planet, mom need mars, lightyear and strange world

Pixar have made it work once with WALL-E, but I agree it’s a hurdle. Even animated sci-fi like Iron Giant or Atlantis proved a tough sell to GA.

Do you guys think South Korea performance for Elemental can be replicated in Japan? Or at least overperform compared to expectations? I think if it does the WW total could end up looking pretty decent, not a hit but not a money loser

If it wants any hope of great legs there the Disney+ date needs to be pushed to like Christmas or next year, even if just for Japan. Audiences there have shown again and again they don't mind waiting a few months to watch for free ever since Disney+ debuted in the market.

The character is 70, I guess. It is still a spectacularly stupid idea, even if it was meant to be a gag recalling Raiders.

After a certain age, if a young person hits an old one, it seems like elder abuse...

It's not so bad in the context of the movie though. The punch was a last ditch effort to try and save Indy from making a terrible mistake.

If having a trans character alone was enough to get West Side Story banned a number of countries with out-of-touch views, I imagine the Hari Nef character would be enough to cause the same here.

I think that's a given. ATSV got banned in UAE just for the trans flag that was blink and you miss it.

So Indiana Jones is taking Flashs spot as biggest bomb of the year then?

Have to wait for Deadline's breakdown, but I suspect Flash will still end up losing more money. Production cost is much higher for Indy, but Flash had a much bigger marketing spend which cancels some if not most of that out. Barring a complete collapse, Indy should also comfortably outgross Flash both DOM and WW.

Biggest question is Japan. Could be borked by a September Disney plus release. Or it could bomb outright

They should just delay the Disney+ date for Japan only to account for its late theatrical release. It's pretty common for streaming platforms to have different accessibility to content depending on region.

Less than $400M gross probably means $200M+ loss. It needs like $750M to break even maybe more.

Have to wait for the inevitable Deadline article for the specifics, but I don't see it losing more money than Strange World after ancilliaries. It's probably grossing at least $300 million more WW which more than makes up for the additional $100 million in spending. Plus, the $295 million budget likely doesn't account for the 25% UK tax rebate.

$170M would be a colossal flop especially since it’s doing disastrously overseas so far. It’s currently hearing towards less than $400M WW which would make it one of the biggest flops of all time if not the biggest…

Big flop for sure, but it's probably losing around $100-150 million for Disney. Recently, Strange World would still be a bigger bomb since Disney lost $200 million on that one. And adjusted for inflation, pretty sure John Carter is the biggest money loser for the studio.
