  1. Haywire

    9:30 PM - 75 people

    Trailers

    21 Jump Street

Some movie about war that apparently has real life soldiers playing the characters. The trailer has a great song playing in it.

A movie about an Edgar Allan Poe themed killer.

Project X? A movie about a giant party.

    Movie:

So honestly I just wanted to go to the movies to ask for a movie poster that they didn't have. Haywire had Fassbender and action and good reviews so I chose to see that.

HOLY GOD THE FIGHT SCENES (of which there are maybe 10 that each last 5 minutes at least) ARE AMAZING. The choreography is perfect and it's really flashy yet still "real" with guns rarely being used. The girl is apparently some martial arts person in real life so I guess she already knew some of her character's (Mallory) awesome moves. Michael Fassbender is only in it for maybe 20 min but he's great, Michael Douglas is good but in it even less, Ewan McGregor (sp?) is pretty awesome, and the rest of the cast is too long to list. Just woa. I would see this again to watch the bedroom fight scene. And the one on the beach. And in the diner. And the one in Barcelona. And all the others. AND THE LAST LINE! It's hilarious!

One thing I noticed was that the font used to name the cities the characters go to is like the same font they used in Contagion. Same director, who knew. Great cinematography. AND THE SCORE. AMAZING MUSIC.

When each fight scene reached the climax the audience I was watching with all laughed at how friggin' amazing Mallory is and how she just owned that particular opponent. Hard.

Carano is an MMA fighter...you didn't know that?

  3. We all should have seen TDI breaking out. I actually predicted a 25M OW, but that was still way lower then the actual. The reactions to the trailer were insane all over the internet and the hype on the week before is release date was crazy.Contraband has Mark Walhberg, a solid trailer with a cool music (this helps, IMO) and opened on the MLK weekend. I am starting to think that the MLK is an excellent weekend to open a movie looking at the past 3/4 years. But I never predicted 30M 4-days for Contraband. Maximum was 23-24M 4-days, I think. But if had to choose only 2 movies to see in this month, I would definitly choose Contraband and The Devil Inside.

They both look terrible. Haywire and The Grey at least have notable directors/stars involved.
  4. Shame:8:05 pm showing75% full (quite a turnout for a film like this on a Sunday night/mix of young and old)Trailers:A SeperationCrazy HorseWe Need to Talk About KevinMovie: A-The directorial work on this film is nothing short of outstanding, even when the successive anguish that's depicted throughout the film nearly becomes too much. Shame is a masterclass in showing instead of telling. Brandon's addiction is never talked about in direct terms, the audience is simply shown his ups and downs (mostly downs) as he navigates New York City's lavish nightworld. The cinematography is impeccable, the score is quite phenomenal (surprised it hasn't turned up in discussions about Best Original Score), and Fassbender gives the best leading male performance of the year. Carey Mulligan plays against type and plays it well, in particular a beautiful scene that features her singing a rendition of "New York, New York." The ending wasn't as moving as it could've been, but overall the film signals Steve McQueen as a force to be reckoned with. I lost count of how many scenes were shot in one take. Rivals Cauron's work on Children of Men in that regard.A Dangerous Method:10:15 pm showing25% fullTrailers:Albert KnobbsIn the Land of Blood and HoneyWe Need to Talk About KevinMovie: B-Fassbender, Knightley, and Mortensen all deliver good performances. However, judging by the muted and somewhat dull directorial execution, it seems as if the turn-of-the-century European setting stifled Cronenberg in his attempt to adapt this story to the screen. Beyond the sexual and masochistic nature of what Jung and Freud were studying, there's not much excitement to be had. The performances, particularly those scenes between Fassbender and Mortensen, keep the film afloat when it becomes too talky or too dependent on voice-overs that narrate letters between the two psychologists. At no fault of his own, Fassbender's character arc is seemingly uneven, and the ending brings neither closure nor ambiguous profundity to any of the characters. Nevertheless, the conversations between Jung and Freud are fascinating and full of dry wit, and Knightley's performance as a sometimes crazy doctor-to-be is quite impressive.

  5. Shame

    Clearview's Chelsea Theater - 2:45 PM - 85% full.

I also walked in to The Artist at 2, 90% full, and Dragon Tattoo 2:30 Sold Out.

    Trailers:

Missed most of them because I was waiting for the ticket checker guy to leave.

Albert Nobbs - Do people in the movie really believe she's a guy?

    Movie:

It's pretty okay. Fassbender really isn't that great, but Mulligan (sp?) is pretty awesome. The movie has less dialogue than The Artist (not really, but pretty close to it). There's little editing - in one scene he goes for a run that lasts around 5 city blocks. Then when she is singing New York, New York is stays on her face for the whole song, and since she sings it really slow it's there a while. Pretty graphic movie that really didn't need to be. GREAT score with some awesome strings though.

    Yea.

You must be trying to rile up FishNets. Best male perf of the year.
  6. the funniest thing about this dispute is that this fassbender guy reminds exactly of daniel craig. and craig has done smaller movies . but since bond raised his profile, i don't blame him for trying more mainstream roles too. the paycheck is hard to refuse. fassbender is doing the same thing with xmen, prometheus. let's see what he does next now that he's on everyone's radar.one thing is for sure. just like craig, he'll never be A-list in america. both men have rugged, hard looks ( although i admit fass is cuter and more appealing). they don't have traditional good looks like pitt and depp. but it's ok if you say he's only interested in acting and not starring in big budget movies.

Depends how you define A-list. For example, Gosling is considered A-list despite not being a box office draw. These days no actor is a bonafide box office draw besides Will Smith. Even Depp and Downey Jr. have their hiccups (The Soloist, The Tourist, Rum Diary). Now, if an actor has talent, has a few hits under their belt, and they're in demand = A-list.
  7. But it dropped and is under $2 mio daily. yes! America hates Daniel Craig. I`m 100% sure DT would have done much better had it not been advertised as DC movie. Big mistake to feature him so p[rominently as if Maramania wasn`t the main character.

You're secretly in love with Craig, aren't you? Seriously...this comes across as pathetic.
  8. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo2:20pm showing90% fullTrailers:Rock of Ages - laughs, good reactionContraband - silence21 Jump Street - laughsGhost Rider 2 - person next to me: "the first one was bad"John Carter - silenceMovie: AFincher does it again. I had my doubts due to some of the subdued and/or mediocre critical notices, but his command of the craft here is on par with The Social Network. Granted, I had never read the book or seen the original movies, so I was going in fresh-faced and without a clue of where the story was headed. Mara is excellent and deserves an Oscar nomination, Craig gives a fine performance himself, and the climactic sequence with him, Lisbeth, and the killer is one of the best scenes of the year, all set to a gloriously incongruous 80's song. Nomination for cinematography and editing should also be in store if voters can get past the rape scene, which is appropriately brutal and intense.

  9. My interest in a movie starts with who's attached to it: either a director or writer whose work I find solid, intriguing, etc. If it's an adaptation of a book I love then I'm also interested.A trailer might make me interested in something that I wasn't previously aware of, or re-ignite my interest in something I hadn't been excited about earlier, but that happens less frequently. But despite my preference in seeing movies in theaters, it comes down to scheduling and a certain "must see" quality. I'm interested in THE GRAY because I like Joe Carnahan and Liam Neeson, for example, but it may well end up being a movie I catch on Netflix or Blu-Ray.For 2012, there are only 3 films that are "must see" in theaters: PROMETHEUS, TDKR, and THE HOBBIT.

Joe Carnahan directed The Gray? It looks nothing like Narc or Smokin' Aces.
  10. Here are the 2011 movies I've seen so far in theaters, in order of release (not necessarly in the order that I've seen them).

    The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 Sum. $271,252,000 4,066 $138,122,261 4,061 11/18

Even though a movie like Twilight was released in mid-november, I saw it a week ago in the mid of december. I'm pretty sure I also saw Jack and Jill sometime at the beginning of december. All these movies are not necessarly movies that I was looking forward to seeing, but rather deciding to go out with a friend(s) and picking what current movie could be interesting.

As you can see, I won't be stopping watching movies in theaters any time soon. To me it will always be different from watching a movie at home, it's basically a night out, a reason to GET OUT OF HOME. lol

My favorite movie for the year is by far Rise of the Planet of the Apes which I saw twice in theaters. Definitely the movie of the year in my eyes. My least favorite was Drive, it was too slow/boring and also more violent/graphic than the trailer suggested.

Drive is brilliant filmmaking. Take some Ritalin. :P
  11. People have different tastes but either the movies are really crap or I'm getting as I said more discerning, here's my takes:The Devil Inside- Don't watch horror films. Why watch a movie whose purpose is to scare you? Not fun for me. Plus, story is mostly crap and in general they are IMO a mostly creatively bankrupt genre with no replay value. You don't go on a rainy day "Let's pop in a nice slasher/gory/killing flick with guaranteed sub-standard acting, and completely irrelevant to real life in any good or enjoyable way" because yes, it's nice to imagine you're a pirate, in a world with space robots or superheroes not being the victim of or more creepily the killer. /endrantonhorrorgenreBeauty and the Beast- May see it only because I remember it being good and never seen it on the big screen, plus many Disney fans as friends.Contraband- Generic Wahlberg cop drama movie that may hit certain notes but you've seen one you've seen them all.Joyful Noise- Not to be racist but urban movies always seem awful to me. Humourless every single time.Haywire- The cast is good enough to rent and Soderbergh presents some sort of integrity to what otherwise looks like a B-grade production.Red Tails- Better and more interesting war movies already made that don't focus on minorities to pretend it's a significant event a la sports movies.Underworld 4- Rewatch all their trailers. The images get sleeker but it sounds like the same damn thing. Production value is terrible too.Grey- Do I really care about Liam Neeson fighting wolves? Why even make this movie?Man on Ledge- Worthington cannot act. The twist is in the trailer. But mostly the former kills it.One for the Money- I love a good rom-com but they keep producing shit like this. Who the hell finds these entertaining or even interesting? They are always so detached from reality.Big Miracle- Inspirational, probably. Interesting, not really.Chronicle- First flick I actually want to watch. Could reek of Percy Jackson/I Am Number Four being a teenage fantasy but if it goes darker instead of teen it could be good.Woman in Black- See Devil Inside, but also, as a thriller, not interesting.Journey 2- First was a guilty pleasure but the effects look so bad, I've never read the book and a lot of the humour missed plus chemistry seems non-existent.Safe House- Could be generic but Denzel guarantees a little class to proceedings still.Star Wars- No.Vow- Channing Tatum has proven he cannot act well enough to make me invested in any dramatic storyline.Act of Valor- Could be good as a TV special.Ghost Rider 2- No one asked for this. It looks ridiculous. Story is a joke.Arietty- Already out on home video. This Means War- Like both Pine and Hardy and even Witherspoon but really? Spies fighting for a girl? Why would anyone watch this?Gone- Seyfried seems to be more and more of a go-to cheesy role actress. Idiotic sounding plot.Tyler Perry- Tyler Perry. No.Wanderlust- Extremely unfunny.

Well said. This is Jan/Feb almost every year. Only Chronicle and This Means War (dig the cast) look appealing to me. Maybe Haywire if reviews are good enough.
  12. Unfortunately, a lot of people are limited by little expendable income. I myself am slowly but surely gravitating toward only paying for movies that I'm looking forward to and/or have strong reviews/word of mouth. I'd rather spend the money elsewhere at this point, not on junk films like Alvin 3 or Ghost Rider 2.

You can still go to the movies quite often without watching stuff like that. Case in point: myself.
  13. It looks like it..but the Summer wasn't actually that strong. It was up from last year, but that's largely due to there being 30 more films than last summer. The average per film was exactly the same. Film's like DH2 and TF3 look impressive, but DH2's opening was right around HBP's level and TF3 saw a massive decline in overall ticket sales as well 3D makes the summer look a lot stronger than it actually was in terms of attendance.

True. I forgot about 3D. Nevertheless, there were plenty of non-3D films that did very well...Hangover II, Fast Five, Rise of the Apes, Bridesmaids, The Help, Horrible Bosses, Bad Teacher, etc.
  14. Question for all BOT users and maybe a thread can be created somewhere about how many movies have you seen this year compared to years previous. Personally I am at a decade's low in terms of seeing movies. Saw a ton at end of 2010 but none so far (maybe going to MI4 in IMax). Been busy with life doing a couple things but still not motivated because the projects haven't been worth the money overall from what I've been told. HP8, Moneyball, H&K3 were last 3 and I saw most of those matinee early which I never have done in past.So how many movies have you gone to see in comparison to years past?

So far seen 36 in theaters, 49 overall. Have 7 left to see from this year. I usually end up seeing 50-60 overall and 40-50 of those in theaters. This year hasn't been any different for me than years past. Then again I'm a true movie fan. Seriously, people, if you're a movie fan and you have the time and money for it...go to the theater. But if you think watching a movie alone at home on a TV is better than watching it in a communal atmosphere with spirited crowd reactions, then I guess nothing can help you.
