  1. This is a Cap movie pretending to be Avengers, but expecting to perform like Avengers. If this movie fails to perform like Avengers, people will say it should perform like a Cap movie. However, how can a movie ( featuring Spidey, Iron Man, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Vision, War Machine  ) perform like a "Cap movie"?

Besides, the budget is 250 million + who knows how much was spent for marketing and promotion ( yes, we should also consider that number too..Everyone talked about BVS and even included money spent for marketing, which means CW also should be considered for that discussion ).

In a nutshell; This is an Avengers movie pretending to be a Cap movie, expecting to perform like Avengers and not like a Cap movie. That's all. :)

True but it still made 220 million this weekend and I imagine European drops will be  far better next weekend which is still wide and clear.

As of right now the min domestic gross is 436 million as that is Ultron  Legs based on a 181.8 million opening.

I dont see any evidence for this to have worse legs then Ultron

It only made that, thanks to China's grosses which masked the rest of the overseas drops.

Now that the movie has already been released everywhere with no new markets to open, its drops will probably be more noticeable. China's opening weekend managed to balance the other drops, giving the feeling that the movie hasn't dropped too much.

  3. Overseas drops were less noticeable, because China's huge numbers managed to mask the other drops.

Given the fact that there's no new market to open, we'll have a better idea about the drops during the next weekend.

I think we might have Iron Man 3 final numbers as CW final worlwide grosses. 1.2 billion worldwide is my bet.  Numbers are unpredictable and we also have X-Men Apocalypse soon. So, let's wait for the long haul.

  4. Captain America: Civil War might be a Cap movie, but I wouldn't call it a solo movie.  How can a solo movie have Captain and almost every Avenger plus Spidey and Black Panther?

By the way, I'm not tlaking about box office ( numbers are good ), but about the movie itself.

Iron Man 3 and Thor The Dark World are the true definition of solo movies. Iron Man 3 had no Avenger (Rhodes wasn't one yet ) and Thor 2 only had Thor ( no Avenger at all, other than Loki pretending to be Captain ).

The fact that Iron Man 3 made almost 1.3 billion worldwide, is impressive.  Yeah, If Civil War can't beat that number, I'll say it's gonna be disappointing.

  5. Gotta love Forbes article about the numbers.

They said BVS drops hard against Civil War. :)

You can't get more biased than that. By the way, they were the ones saying Civil War would make at least 2 billion worldwide.

  6. The whole thing was confusing. I think part of the problem is that Civil War wouldn't decide if it's a Cap movie or Avengers 2.5 or a Cap movie featuring the Avengers or Winter Soldier 2.5 or maybe everything!

From a marketing viewpoint, this is really confusing to general audiences. I had that problem with BVS too. The movie wanted to be 4 or 5 different movies at the same time. It started as a MOS sequel, then it turned into a Batman reboot, then it tried to set up Justice League, then tried to set Wonder Woman's solo movie, then it tried to set up a possible Injustice plot scenarion ( The Flash dream ) and then tried to adapt the most famous Superman saga ( Death and Return of Superman ) in freaking 20 minutes! All that in 2 hours and half. :)

Anthony Mackie said this is Avengers 3.6 or something like that. Then Downey Jr said this is his "Iron Man 4". Then the directors says this is pretty much a Cap sequel, with means it could be Winter Soldier 2 or Winter Soldier 2.5.

So, yeah. That can be confusing. Critics are praising Civil War, but people perhaps are seeing the movie for what it really is, not for the critics overhyping it like hell.

So, in a nutshell: People say this is a Cap movie, because it's told from "Cap's perspective". However, this is Civil War, which means we have to see other heroes perspectives too. It's a Cap movie featuring Avengers, but it's meant to perform like Avengers movies. When Civil War fails to match Avengers numbers, people will be saying this is fantastic for a Cap sequel. However, this is a sequel featuring almost every Avenger, plus Spidey and Black Panther. So, it's good for a Cap sequel, but disappointing for a Cap sequel featuring a ton of characters.

It depends on what is Marvel expecting from Civil War.

  7. Overseas grosses were smaller than what I thought...

I think final overseas grosses will be around 510-530 million, while final domestic grosses might be 320-335 million

So, 830-865 million worldwide, give or take it. Yeah, BVS could have and should have done way more. It had Batman and Wonder Woman, though this wasn't Justice League at all. Perhaps, people went to watch it, expecting to see everyone fighting together. That wasn't the case.

All in all, at least this is Snyder's highest grossing movie, Cavill's highest grossing movie and possibly also Affleck's highest grossing movie worldwide.

BVS has been plagued by negative rumors since its beginning. Even before the official release, there was a huge level of negativity towards the movie. Every possible positive news would have a negative spin and so on. It's true, and I didn't even love this movie.

Other than Fantastic Four, I've never seen a movie getting so much hate before. Fantastic Four was a turd and it deserved. BVS had its flaws, but it wasn't a 100% turd. In fact, it was quite fine, despite its flaws.

The fact that it managed to make money despite its problems, shows that many people gave it a chance. I mean, it's not any movie that manages to get almost 900 million worldwide.

It's falling O/S just as fast as domestically and with JB expanding next week it's not going to get any better for it.  It'll make about $34m this weekend O/S and $55m WW.  I don't see how it gets near $900m with more 60% drops on the horizon.

For some odd reason, I still think it might get 900 million worldwide.

In the long haul, it's possible. I guess we might see next week, after its daily grosses.

  9. WB should cut the 3D crap.

Just drop that laughable gimmick. Man of Steel was a 2D movie. BVS had NOTHING remotely 3D other than the ticket price.

3D is also making movies more expensive than they should be. If BVS had a budget of 250 million, what's gonna happen to JL? Will WB give a 350 million budget? That's insane.

  10. If WB reveals a Batman solo movie, people will probably celebrate!

They could film JL. Once filming is finished, Affleck could film his Batman solo flick. Then, WB keeps JL shelved while Batman gets all the attention.

I think Batman is the Iron Man of DCU, isn't he? So, WB should focus on that.  Wonder Woman is Black Widow, Aquaman should be Thor. Cyborg could be Jarvis. Flash is Quicksilver. Superman is Captain America.

  11. Damn, if BVS fails to even make more than 800 million worldwide, I'm positive Snyder gets the boot from WB.

I like Snyder, but there's not way WB is satisfied with these numbers. This is basically another The Amazing Spider Man 2.

However, TASM 2 managed to have a higher budget than BVS. Thet spent almost 500 million. Sony's CEO even said they expected the movie to make 1 billion worldwide. At least we're glad that it sucked, because thanks to that, Spidey is in Civil War. :)
