Indonesian cinemas started to open gradually from October 9th.
Exhibitors started with smaller towns and cities, and with practically no prior announcement, to minimize backlash.
As of today, November 18th, 119 out of 417 locations are open. Not all screens are open in each location. Capacity is capped at 25-50% depending on local regulation.
The dearth of new titles continue to haunt these still-empty halls.
Let's see if December can bring some change.

I tried to put Corpse's daily numbers into Excel, there must be a mistake somewhere because end numbers are not the same. Or is my spreadsheet messed up?

Indonesia actually have one cinema open since 7 July: Hollywood Cinema in the city of Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi/Celebes. They have been playing very old movies, and new locally produced one. No admission data, but also no incidents reported.
On 26 September 2020, Cinema 21, the largest cinema chain in Indonesia, opened one of their outlets as a trial. Jatiland XXI is located in Ternate, capital of Northern Maluku province. Limited seating and the usual protocols applied.
First day result was very promising, as nearly 30% of tickets were sold.
There is unconfirmed information that partial reopening will commence in the next two months (looks like aiming for James Bond).
We'll see about that.

May be same in Ind-ia.
This second delay (first one was 29 July) was even harder as come locations already had DCP's of Tenet and The New Mutants ingested, ready to go.
A lot of local movies intended for theatrical release have now gone to Netflix or the brand new Disney+ Hotstar Indonesia.

As the capital city reentered partial lockdown on Monday and cases spiraled out of control, hope fades for reopening anytime soon.
Indonesian cinemas may not reopen until January 2021.
The damage and industry setback will be unthinkable.
Goodbye, cruel world.

The provisional date has now been set: 10 September.
After the opening movies, import schedule will follow "regular" programming with The King's Man, Wonder Woman 1984, Death on the Nile etc.
Local tentpoles will be released starting October.
-
Indonesia set to reopen soon.
Notable import movies will be:
- Tenet
- The New Mutants
- Unhinged
Disney+ Hotstar will be available from 5 September, so looks like no Mulan in theaters.
There will be some re-release of successful local films cut short by the outbreak, such as Mariposa and Aku Tahu Kapan Kamu Mati ("I Know When You Will Die" - how eerie). By October it is expected that a semblance of normal scheduling for local movies will return.

I heard whispers ......

Indonesia is listed as one of the countries where TENET will open first: 26 August.
However, the government has issued no statement allowing cinemas to reopen, so WB really knows a lot. 😎
There is an ongoing discussion about having the reopening sometime in August, but nothing formal has come out of it. Not yet.
Hopefully soon.

Indonesian cinema reopening postponed due to a massive wave of backlash.
Intensive negotiations underway but I don't see a compromise being made anytime soon.

Thank you for your interest in Indonesia!

Indonesia will also have that INCEPTION anniversary reissue. Hopefully with the WB sizzle reel.

CONFIRMED

Reopening week slate:
Import movies: Unhinged, Trolls World Tour
Plus two local movies.

Update: it is now looking to be either 30 July or 3 August

Indonesia was just tying to set course for 15 July reopening (slight delay from 6 July, for obvious reasons).
Now, back to uncertainty.

Tentative cinema reopening date for Indonesia: 6 July.
Again, virus be damned is the overall approach.

Two months since my last post. All cinemas in the country are still closed.
I do a continuous update on my Twitter account regarding cinema reopening readiness all over the world.
Sadly, Indonesia is still one of the worst impacted.
However, it looks more likely that we will open our cinemas on July, after nearly 4 months of complete shutdown.
The "economy needs to be restarted, virus be damned" school of thought is seemingly gaining more traction.
Let's see about one month from now.

Today, March 26th.
Only about 100 cinema screens are open, all at reduced capacity and showtimes. Less than 4% of national capacity.
We are bracing for the peak.
Stay safe everyone.

Indonesia is approaching a near-lockdown situation.
More and more cities are closing schools and offices.
Cinemas recently included.
Some local tentpoles have delayed their releases with more to follow.
The government has declared state of emergency until 29 May.
The total number of daily showtimes (normally upwards of 10K) has dropped significantly in the past 4 days.
Expect an even steeper drop Monday, when capital Jakarta closes all cinemas.
Stay safe everyone.

I just noticed that Indonesia's two largest cinema chain, XXI and CGV, have also changed Birds of Prey title in their website and booking app.
Meanwhile, The Gentlemen and Brahms: The Boy II opened yesterday. The Call of the Wild will follow tomorrow.
The next big one will be Sonic on the 26th. Videogame adaptations may be associated with box office failures in general, but in Indonesia the last 6 movies (Warcraft to Detective Pikachu, 2016 to 2019) ALWAYS breaks 1 million admission.
Too bad I can't attend the premiere screening tonight.

Hi Charlie, none of the distributors are willing to divulge their numbers, but I can tell you they're all pretty modest.
Even Peninsula didn't work.
