A certain someone had 'Dune' at $13M but that was 12 hours ago. I am guessing Deadline was projecting something like 13 + 17 + 11 to get to their early $41M number? That would be a 50% hold. I think it can do better than that.

Really good numbers for 'Dune' but I don't think you can make any type of "Part One" comparisons. It was during the pandemic and also a day/date release on HBO Max.
We have no clue what the first one would have done under normal circumstances.

I hate to be that guy, but FNAF.
Tough comparison there. Wasn't FNAF also released on Peacock the week it came out?
I expect Dune Part 2 to have a nice opening but better legs. I think there will be some repeat viewings and maybe more importantly, there is nothing on the calendar that's going to eat into it. It has a great release date.

Even if Phillips/Phoenix cost a lot more this time around (and throw in Lada Gaga) I still don't see how a movie that's likely going to be in rooms with very little action set pieces is costing $200M.
But I think it will be profitable regardless.

97 percent is better than I thought it would be and I was thinking high 80s. Sounds epic.

I have a feeling this will be a big hit but also very polarizing. It's going to be a shitstorm of bad takes from all comers.

Denis has never made a bad film. I'm really hyped. I agree with others that Part One is definitely better and better on rewatch.

Aquaman 1 grossed $1152 million worldwide..... Aquaman 2 grossed one third of that. How come it's not a utter terrible result ?!
It's a sequel to a now defunct franchise, They didn't market it. They dumped it and left it to die... and it's going to do well over $400M worldwide. Over 2x the gross of Shazam 2, The Marvels, Blue Beetle and way more than The Flash as well.

Aquaman’s budget is probably higher than $205M.
Are you an insider? If not, then this post means nothing.

Ant-Man has $200M budget, Aquaman 2 has $205M budget. $205M is more than $200M.
Ant-Man spent more on P&A

Nah it’s terrible
What part of "it's going to break even" are you missing? It's actually going to break even unlike a lot of other 'blockbusters' from 2023.

You were asking if less than $200m worldwide was possible a few weeks ago, so let’s not bother with this type of bait.
And Aquaman 2 cost less than Ant-Man 3 so that post is just strange all around.

Aquaman 2 looks like it's locked for $120M and $400M worldwide. Not a terrible result all things considered.

By the way, there's posts about BvS bombing in this very thread nearly 8 years after it came out and that movie was actually profitable. There's always going to be discussion about movies that changed the course of history and I think 'The Marvels' qualifies for that. It's the moment where comic book movies stopped being THE thing...

what's really hilarious is that it's considered hilarious. In a normal world, anyone would guess that ABY would be big with women (romcom, fashionable female lead, hot male lead) while a nerd movie would not. And yet here we are.
Disney thought they knew what women wanted and proved they know less about women than a 40-Year Old Virgin.

BVS is still the only $100m+ opener to not hit a 2x multiplier. Seems a bit silly to compare a movie that opened to $167m to one opening around $30m.
In the end it still made $875M. How many movies will cross that mark over the next 3 years?

I consider myself a diehard 'Mean Girls' fan and I have very little interest. I don't understand why this exists. But I'm happy that it's starting out well.

They maybe lost in the 400m range from the big Flash, Shazam, Blue Beetle, and TCP bombs, but that’s not terrible at all when you consider the massive amount of profit they likely made this year. They may have made in the vicinity of $1b alone in Barbie profits and then add a solid $600+m or so in profits from their other hits I mentioned.
Compare to Disney where it was one movie making maybe a $300m profit and everything else barely breaking even or bombing spectacularly and you see just how much of a win 2023 was for EB.
This could get ugly now that you mentioned Disney. For some reason this poster wants Disney and WB to have had "equal years" when it's just not the case.

'Aquaman 2' is going to get fairly close to the break even point. Not many people predicted that after it was left for dead.

Just want to point out that we have 15(!) movies over 1M this weekend. Compared to last year this week, when we only had 8. 15th place was making 142k. 2022 this weekend had 8 movies over 1M, with 15th place making 190k.
Compare that to this weekend in 2020 (before Covid obviously) had 14 movies over a million, and 2019 had 17.If for nothing else, this holiday has shown that depth has returned to the box office. We’ve seen that the market can sustain massive grosses (Spider-Man, Top Gun, Barbie, Avatar), and now we’ve seen it can support depth of the product exists. I would say that this is a good weekend for people like us who track this stuff. Shows signs of a healthy market.
Yeah I much prefer that the box office gross is split between a bunch of movies.

If WB marketed Aquaman like they marketed the Flash it could've made them some money.
There would be a trade off though as well. I think when it's all said and done Aquaman 2 will actually make them some money.

Told y'all Sydney Sweeney can be HER....

Sydney Sweeney is a huge star. Most of the cast of 'Euphoria' is. That show was wild and it grabbed the attention of kids and adults.
