If Shin-Gojira does 10m opening weekend that would be awesome.

Realistically, I don't think it will make that much in its opening weekend. Godzilla (2014) only opened with $4,992,630. Realistically, I believe the opening gross for this will only be a little more than that. What matters most will be how it is received. Word of mouth is important, because that's the only reason Godzilla made as much as it did.

  2. The angle they used for that running sequence made me laugh.

Unfortunately, I can see this doing poorly like PanIn the Heart of the Sea, or The Legend of Tarzan. I'm noticing a trend when it comes to making movies about (or based on) characters who are at least partially public domain entities. I don't see this one faring any better than the rest. It might do well in Europe, but that's about it.

  3. It has to contend with Shin Gojira and The Legend of Tarzan starting on 7/29 and 7/30 respectively. The week after, it has to compete with Rudolph and Ippaiattena (8/6), another animated movie featuring talking cats. Plus, the aforementioned One Piece Gold will be in theaters for a while as well.

I'm pretty sure The Legend of Tarzan won't be something to worry about judging by how Pan and In the Heart of the Sea performed there, but Godzilla is a relative unknown in this case. It's been 12 years since his last motion picture. Tomorrow (7/25) there will be a premiere for Shin Gojira. The reviews will either help that film or damage it.

And almost everybody will bitch the movie is not up to the tension of the trailer because everybody now apparenty is bored by 20 minutes set pieces with lots of CGI warfare and destruction.

    Cricle of Life.

People bitched about Godzilla before, during, and after its run. People will do the same before, during, and after Kong: Skull Island's run. I'm seeing people bitch right now because the trailer is "too Godzilla-like." It wouldn't matter if Kong was in the movie for 30 fucking minutes, because some would complain that there's "too much Kong, not enough drama." You can't win with people. You just can't.

So I ignore all of it.

Godzilla's real problem was that the human drama failed to captivate its audience, thus making people thirsty for what they feel to be more interesting, like Godzilla wrecking shit.

Hopefully, this film's creators have learned the right lesson.

I'm hoping for the same thing. Thankfully, I have seen The Kings of Summer and I'm pretty sure that unless the story is awful or the studio meddles with the final product, Jordan Vogt-Roberts probably made his talent shine effectively. My concern lies with the story written by Max Borenstein. Gareth Edwards liked to tease more than most directors (and his style of filmmaking--while pretty--failed to captivate me when the talent was onscreen, and this is why I couldn't enjoy his other film Monsters). Jordan isn't Gareth. However, Max also believed that the constant teasing was a good idea, so he went with it. He's the one I'm worried about.

    $200M+ DOM

    $200M in China

Speaking of which, how popular is King Kong in China? I would imagine that a movie like this would do as well as Godzilla (2014) did.

Only complaint is too much Kong. Would've been better showing less of him (even though we only got a few glimpses).

It seems about on par with the first trailer for Godzilla that was released two years ago. As a matter of fact, the only bit we see are his legs, a bit of his upper body, and a clouded view of his face. So it could be even less.

Reminds me of the 1976 Kong with his stature and all. He's bipedal this time.

Usual Locations [Two-Thirds of Market] - Hourly Ticket Sales [Saturday]

    10AM > 11AM > 12PM > 1PM > 2PM > 3PM > 4PM > 5PM > 7PM > 10PM > FINAL

    63,854 > x89,438 - One Piece Film Gold

    Compared to:
    74,565 > 116,519 > 144,266 > 177,687 > 206,086 > 240,279 > 271,568 > 281,438 > 308,702 > 317,438 > 317,709 - Yo-Kai Watch 2
    52,996 > x60,631 > x75,890 > 117,855 > 124,236 > 147,342 > 187,892 > 197,398 > 226,441 > 286,005 > 293,246 - Star Wars VII
    39,622 > x55,638 > x79,473 > x99,228 > 124,143 > 156,171 > 176,298 > 194,209 > 229,193 > 285,429 > 289,656 - Detective Conan 20

And here's a huge update - unless something usual happens in the afternoon/evening, then it'll definitely exceed 300,000 admissions at the usual locations for the day, and could possibly reach as high as 350,000.

If it would reach ~350,000 tickets here, that'd suggest an opening day well over 500,000 admissions (likely over 550,000) for a first day around ¥700-800 million alone.

That's insane. I hope it does make that much just so I can see it happen.

Not sure what to think of this so far. Great poster, but I'm scared this'll go the way of 2014's Godzilla. God, what a bad movie.

    Anyways, 80M+ opening is happening.

I liked the 2014 movie, but I do agree that this movie has to do more this time around. Hopefully without Gareth, we'll see more of Kong. I feel that it will be different this time around because as far as we know, there aren't any antagonists to steal the show this time around.

(Watch. This statement will haunt me tomorrow.)

I like this more. It shows his eyes better, and some details on his face.

  9. Just saw this. I'm not going to write out a long, drawn out review because I don't know how to rate horror movies (they don't scare me in the slightest). But I believe that Lights Out utilizes the tropes of the horror genre to avoid becoming a genre film and stands out as its own kind of thing. I would probably say that anybody who enjoys The Conjuring will probably like it. I only wish that the antagonist looked different, merely because the ghost itself is uninspiring and typical of what I have seen in horror movies over the last decade. But that wasn't enough to make me dislike it.

Bottom line, I thought it was entertaining (not scary). It certainly helped this movie to have James Wan aboard as producer. I'd say it was worth the price of admission.

I feel these two posts illustrate one of the biggest challenges facing Lionsgate for this movie: finding a larger audience than the TV show.  If you know what is going on in Dino Super Charge right now, and know about the upcoming Ninja Steel, Lionsgate does not need to market this movie to you.  It is everyone else, the types that are similar to 75live, that is the big problem for Lionsgate.  If only the existing TV show's audience goes to see this, then this movie's box office will be more like Warcraft's run in the U.S.: it will end up catering to a largely niche audience, even if superhero films are among the biggest bets studios are making right now.

I could also see it having a domestic gross similar to Warcraft. Cranston and Banks will bring big name recognition to this movie, but it has some things going against it--what you mentioned and the fact that there is a lot of competition in that month.

  11. From August Ragone: "GODZILLA RESURGENCE" TO HIT 100 COUNTRIES - Toho's Greatest Global Distribution of All Time

    http://augustragone.blogspot.com/2016/07/godzilla-resurgence-to-hit-100.html

    Quote

With Hideaki Anno's GODZILLA RESURGENCE less than ten days from release, Toho held a new press conference on the film earlier today in Tokyo. On stage were Director Anno, producer Akihiro Yamauchi, and the film's three leads, Hiromi Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara. RESURGENCE sold to 100 territories in 19 days after being opened to foreign sales. Conversely, GODZILLA FINAL WARS only sold to 67 territories 12 years ago.

Toho announced at the press conference that the film will open in Taiwan on August 12, the Philippines on August 24, Hong Kong and Macao on August 25, and Thailand on September 8th. Toho said that after 12 years since the last production, this new Japanese-made Godzilla is likely to cause a whirlwind overseas, as RESURGENCE is released throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. Yes, inside sources say a NA release may be announced shortly.

*Crosses fingers for a theatrical release.*
