  1. I actually liked Homecoming but the point is not so much I disliked the film but that RT isn’t a x/100, but a percentage of who liked it. I dislike it but I understand why others do.
  2. To add to a point, I do think MCU fatigue may come sooner rather than later. I’m not saying all the films will flopped or won’t get any critical acclaim but I think oversaturation will become a problem. The MCU pre Phase 4, did at most 3 films a year, now we’re looking at anywhere from 4-5 films a year in conjunction with 5-6 movie length TV shows a year, that’s like 9 pieces of media a year at the minimum, I feel like criticisms may be exacerbated because of it.
  3. I see that this forum has handled reviews well after the initial reaction. I’m only going to say this once. Film Twitter is not the kingpin of the film side of Twitter nor is all the opinions of Film Twitter the same. I’m not even sure most critics on RT are avid film Twitter people, at best they represent a small side of the critic world. Hell, everything besides Eternals MCU wise this year has mostly gotten strong reviews. Saying that oh there was bias cause this group didn’t like it and that’s the sole reason why it is doing badly is the same BS the DCEU fanboys did back in 2016 when Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad got bad reviews as the critics had a Synder/DCEU vendetta and acted like they didn’t care about reviews anymore. And I find it hilarious that some of the people who called them out on it are doing the same BS. Sometimes a movie doesn’t click and sometimes the pieces don’t form the way they wanted. Some thought it wasn’t ambitious enough to truly ambitious enough to divert from the MCU formula as it was hyped up, and some found it didn’t scratch the itch that they like from the MCU and you know what, it’s okay. It’s okay that some people just don’t like the MCU, because to be honest why does it matter. And to add to another point, maybe sometimes a film gets a high rating because people really liked it. Ffs I think FFH is easily one of the worst blockbusters of the past decade but I’m not going to say there was obvious critic bias because “they loved a movie I hated and everyone else must be wrong and I’m right.” It’s a likeable movie for the majority of people that doesn’t click with me. I may meme about it a bit but I know I’m probably in the minority. Rotten Tomatoes is not a score that means Film A got x/100 or said film is good or bad, it just means x% of critics liked it. I honestly wished there would be less obsession on the tomato and what percent it is.
  4. With this and Spider Verse 2, action animation lovers will be eating good next year.
  5. Guessing the trailer will be debuted with Eternals given the early release, rather than debuting with Encanto.
  6. Anyways Lightyear looks much better than I expected albeit it’s just a teaser but it’s nice to see Pixar to another stab at sci-fi and more action animation returning to the mainstream. Also the kid in me, does seem to get some Buzz Lightyear TV show flashbacks. I still think the concept of the movie as in “It’s the character as a space ranger, not as a toy” will never not be hilarious to me.
  7. “The movie doesn't end and then you see Andy eating popcorn," the filmmaker clarifies. "This is its own thing… This is standalone. It's the Buzz Lightyear movie. It's that character but as the space ranger, not as the toy."
  8. Who’s predicting it’ll bomb, name one serious prediction from people here that it’d bomb. The worse reactions I’ve seen is maybe instead of thinking an 100m OW, it might be a $80m-$90m opener with not as solid legs. And even then, while it’s arguably too soon to say this is certain and yes CBMs with worse reviews have been more accessible, it’s not a stretch to see it have similar legs to them because of reviews hinting it may be a lot. No one here is saying or foaming at mouth for Eternals to flop, just because things have changed.
  9. I do think a large jump is in order from 1 to 2, primarily due to strong reception and no HBO Max.
  10. Yes! I’m so excited. While I liked the Part 1, I wasn’t over the moon with it and had my share of issues but I think Part 2 will definitely be more up to my speed and trust Villenueve to deliver another winner.
  11. It’s like for Captain Marvel too which I also don’t get. Tbh there’s worse MCU movies in my opinion than either. Both are better imho than the Spider-Man MCU films, Doctor Strange, Iron Man 2, the first two Thors, Civil War. Do I think there’s stuff that needed to be improved sure but both are amusing albeit fine movies like a lot of other MCU movies. Tbf like @ThomasNicole said most comes from timeframe, tone or the third act not holding up but let’s not pretend MCU movies haven’t had those problems before. I don’t want to equate people disliking those movies cause of sexism because it belittles the movies and the work done by the creators but I think within the fanbase, some of it comes from that. I’m not saying that’s the case for this user in particular it’s just a fandom observation.
  12. I mean that hasn’t stopped Jumanji doing well against the Star Wars films, or for more similar demographics, Spider Verse and Bumblebee doing well against Aquaman. The day and date is more of a concern than Spidey. I think a $70m five day is definitely in order.
  13. Tbh i know it’s too soon to say but I do think that them trying to make every movie a big sweeping event may hurt them more in the long run rather than doing more small Phase 1 movies, so they can maybe take more risks creatively. Kind of disappointed Eternals’ reception wasn’t better considering Zhao’s work prior but am also disappointed the dueling between in a way (not saying all MCU products are the same or the MCU is trash) of seemingly the MCU model coming into conflicts with the nature of the story, which has happened for a lot of MCU movies for me.
  14. I third this agreement. To be honest, as one of the people who thought Dune was doing around BR2049/Alita, the fact that this is doing a probable 40m OW is nothing to complain about or claim megabomb. Dune is doing better than I thought.
  15. You know if Luca had opened theatrically, it probably would’ve grossed what Ron’s Gone Wrong’s DOM total for its OD.
  16. The trailer is okay, definitely not as bad as I expected. There’s some wonky CGI at the end with the plane sequence. Ironically, Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake feels more than a miscast than Marky Mark as Sully, lol. Tom doesn’t have the charismatic rogue confidence that Drake has as it feels like watching him as Spider-Man. But hey, the sooner Hollywood learns that Holland isn’t viable box office wise outside of Spider-Man and stops casting in almost every blockbuster, the better.
  17. To be honest, I think the biggest problem the MCU now is basically what to do after Endgame and arguably it’s greatest strength: the inter-connectivity of the universe. Not saying Feige doesn’t have a plan, as he charts what’s next years in advance but I think the focus on making the conflict events more world-ending keep makes these films feel more similar than before . In my opinion, after Endgame, I think they should’ve went back a bit to the Phase 1 stomping grounds and take a breather from the focus of the MCU as a whole and focus more on the characters and their arcs and themes. Barring Black Panther, most of the Earth stuff post-Avengers hasn’t really work for me and have been the weakest because of lack of world building and more of the focus on how this action will change the world and less about the character and their world. The main problem for me for FATWS wasn’t so much the plot (although it was muddled at best), but rather lampshading themes instead of a deeper dives which is a problem I’ve had the Russo’s Cap films and a few other MCU but I think this one hurts the most from it. Carl Lumbly while easily the best part especially in relations to wear Falcon stands as a black Captain America works well but it’s focused on too little in favor of a bunch of MCU plot points instead of what should be Falcon’s journey on being Captain America. Granted it’s no secret, the MCU has a wide audience to appeal to and it’s clear Feige is the captain of the ship, compared to the writers and directors and I think that’s where some of the problems grow from as the focus on interconnectedness of films tends to be the weakest parts of the tv shows so far. The times I’ve really liked the earth bound films outside of Black Panther, were the Ant Man films which I think are somewhat underrated in the MCU library of media, mainly because of the lower stakes and arguably more effective in regards to fun and to be honest hearing bigger and larger scale kind of makes me sad. Shang-Chi and WandaVision also follow this rule for me as I thought the former was great and the latter was really good, but the weak points for both of them is how they try make themselves larger by either incorporating MCU or third act large scale stuff. The cosmic side or not as Earth bound side of things be it the Guardians films or Ragnarok where are definitely some of my favorite films of the MCU, ie in the top 5 for me, is mainly because they are not so much focus on the connection and more so focused on the characters dynamics.
  18. I mean two of them aren’t good, one is pretty great but not my top 5 and the other two are good so that’s a wide variety.
