  1. Huh, they're trying to show the big action spectacle but it doesn't really look that appealing.

They showing her turning into a dragon at the end of this trailer would've been a turning point for the marketing (I dont even know if it's happening so that's why)

So while I think the main selling point for the first movie is still there, I don't know if it's enough to justify seeing it in theaters.

  2. Spider-Man popularity right after TASM2 was awful.

5 years later, SM has appeared in 5 movies that have grossed around 8 billion combined, a successful spinoff, an Oscar winning animated film and one the biggest video games in the past few years.

Pretty impressive how Sony managed to save the IP.

wtf, why? Would that mean TLK and Hobbs and Shaw won't release there?

I read that there were big riots in a city recently, and the news were spreading like wildfire on Weibo.

That + the on and off trade war means that the government will tighten the control it has as much as it can.

Communist regimes always need a foreign target to blame for their mess and that's usually the US so it's really a no-brainer for them.

I don't think it'll escalate that quickly, though. TLK is like 2 weeks away.

God, that Mysterio exposition scene was one of the worst exposition scenes I have scene in a long time. Couldn't there have been a better way to tell his backstory? Would have been better if Mysterio actually revealed it to Peter later on using one of his trippy illusions instead of telling his co-workers what they already knew.

This. I think the whole bar scene was just awful. It's the only part that felt disappointing to me.

After reading this thread, I gotta say some people get easily upset by the most random things.

Possibly my favorite SM movie, maybe ITSV is still ahead.

It'll be like replacing Evans with Mackie 😏

I think they'll be fine as long as they stay as "side" characters. Scarlett and Evans are too iconic to try to position them as the same character with a different actor.

I would've liked a Mackie / Stan movie (I'm not sure if we still can't give away spoilers) doing their own thing but a TV series will have to do. Just like Florence won't be a "main" avenger yet, more like a Wanda/Nebula supporting character (if that's even what they want to do, who even knows at this point)

"Don't force change on people, let the market decide."

That's been a mantra for a loooooooong time.  As long as I've been alive, I think.

Well Disney is one of THE major players in the entertainment market and I think they have a pretty decent idea of "what the market" wants/is going to want in the future.

This is what 'let the market decide' looks like.  I strongly suspect Disney has made the right bet here, given how other similar bets have gone recently.

In the end, this aspect of the movie will sink or swim (no pun intended) on how good Halle Bailey is in the role.  A few folks throwing their toys out of the pram about it is hardly going to matter in the end.  If Halle Bailey is good/great in this film, their objections will matter about just as much as the objections over Zendaya as MJ in the new Spider-Man films.

    I.e: Not at all.

(will make for a tedious thread to read at times, though )

This. Hollywood is realizing that minorities are bringing cash. It's not about diversity or being inclusive or "SJW". It's about what brings them more money.

I guess for some people it's a shock to realize they're not part of the "most profitable" when this was unquestionable through history. I expect fewer and fewer lead roles for the classic white straight male considering the massive sucess of women-led, black-led, asian-led, etc have had recently.

Dumbo lost 1,6 mill with actuals......... Hmmmm.....

    Went from 1.692.000 to 80.000

Where did that money go Disney?

    look here

    https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=studioest&yr=2019&wknd=26&p=.htm

Yes, Disney needs to explain where did they sent that money that Dumbo organically earned in 120 theaters, which was more than it did on the past 9 weeks. Somebody call the FBI.

  8. Only from row seats available at my theater on a monday (!!). For comparison, Anabelle IMAX show has sold just 15 tickets. I know it's anecdotal experience but I don't think theaters will want to get rid of it that soon.

If we go by DOM PTA, it's battling for that 5th choice amongst theaters (behind FFH, TS4, Aladdin with Annabelle and Yesterday likely decreasing more than EG, even without considering that EG is in a very limited number of screens, in comparison to the new openers). So unless it's Disney pulling the plug (even more unlikely) I don't see it losing that many screens.

EVERY studio does this with double features.

    See Rampage when JW:FK opened

    https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=newlinetentpole2018.htm

It also made $1.2m more after they stopped reporting numbers - most likely courtesy of double features with The Meg

Endgame so far has yet to benefit from double features for anything.  Other films though have benefited from it.

People have a weird obsession with Disney.

What they do is bully theaters, though. But any studio would do that too if they were in Disney position and theaters can't say shit because it's basically keeping them alive (it'll be interesting if theaters will hold a grudge when Disney starts to fall)

Disney absolutely has reason to want to give a push to a film within it's MCU, which also apparently sets up Phase 4 spectacularly.

The more anticipation built now for phase 4, the better it is for Disney next year.

Let's not pretend like the Sony/Spidey deal only benefits one party. If that was so, Disney would have never made the deal. They aren't in desperate need to make deals that don't benefit them.

Not saying you're wrong but Disney does own S-M merchandise rights so even if it didn't benefit their film division (which it obviously does) they still would've made the deal.

  11. Huh this wasn't as bad as I thought.

The movie kinda gives up halfway through it but it had a nice concept, just not well executed. It's kinda a shame because it seems like a common theme this year, really cool ideas half-assed so badly that the movie ends up being a big disappointment.

It doesn't deserve a 24% on RT, I would've guessed 45% or something. Not that it is much different.

AOS is an irrelevant show that the MCU film producers don't care for...Ming Na can appear as a different character  in the MCU films

Yeah, I know but it's the less irrelevant one  (considering Agent Carter is completely canon and there's no discussion) so they might think about it.

I would love to see her anyway.

  13. Both Ludi Lin and Ross Butler seem to be getting bigger each time, so I guess they are good choices for that Crazy Rich Asians demographic (aka Asian Americans). Would love to see Ming-Na Wen but unlikely since she's on AoS (apparently she did 2 different characters on Fresh Off The Boat? there's still hope)

Now if they want it to be big in China they need to cast some Chinese stars  (or at least actors from mainland China)
