They didn’t buy Star Wars just to make their money back. This was supposed to be the biggest cash cow even bigger than Marvel after solo that a pipe dream. You can dress it up how you like but they essentially overpaid for Fox and everyone knows it. X-men won’t work that well with the Avengers if you think about it, a world where everyone loves super people meets a world where everyone is supposed to hate super people. Oh sure if Disney can get some people to sub to Disney+ good for them but they are entering the lions den where new content is king of streaming nobody is subscribing to watch old things from years ago.

    But...

    They do

  2. Grinch did well and was ok. SLOP1 was an awful movie but it did great so it makes sense the second one is doing as bad.

Now, Sing was BvS/G14 levels of bad and I wanted to like it so much so I hope the next one crashes and burns.

Minions/DM franchise will be ok. I don't think people here realize how nuts kids and parents go for them. I dont think even Minions had "bad reception"  for its target audience.

They'll be ok if they do some (small) course-correcting

For those that criticized the movie for being pointless there's the answer right there, introducing Aladdin to a new generation

I mean, from a financial perspective this is a no-brainer.

Introducing your classics to a new generation while milking the generations that already love your movies.

Especially considering that their worst performing are Dumbo and Pete's Dragon, and they barely lost money (if they even did, I'd think PD broke even, and Dumbo will be really close)

People saying "why is this a movie?" have no idea how the industry works.

Guys. The reason this is underperforming is the reason I’ve been saying all along. People didn’t like the first Godzilla and because of that didn’t have interest in the sequel

I think G14 has the 2nd worst reception for a blockbuster this decade.

BvS reception while toxic got way more exposure because both the public and the media teamed up to shit on DC. While critics were ok with G14.

I hated it too but I was willing to give this a chance after great trailers. I'm really on the fence right now waiting for reactions to see if this is similar to Venom when it might not be good but you can enjoy it if you don't look too deep.

  5. What? This doesn't feel as hyped as I2, I know Toy Story is Pixar's crown jewel but WHAT?

If there's over I2/200m talk, I'd guess 135-150m OW/500m DOM is realistic (even pessimistic) and honestly that's mind blowing.

Disney always wins I guess. Maleficent will be their yearly sacrifice (since Dumbo underperformed but I dont think it's even that far away from breakeven and I dont see any Fox release doing that bad, maybe Dark Phoenix?)

  6. Ok, this was... great? I'm totally shocked (and upset at how Disney butchered the marketing)

Maybe it isn't as good as it could've been (aka like the animated one) but honestly Naomi just carries the whole movie, I see some people dislike her song but when I saw I totally bought it.

Mena, Will and the handmaid were really charismatic too. I think the cast is what made the movie (and if they had nailed Jafar I'm sure everyone would be pleased)

On the other hand, the green screen was horrible (specially in "A Whole New World"). Maybe it's me but lately every major movie or TV show has serious problems with that.

By what percentage are we anticipating EG to surpass Avatar WW?

    Title Year Gross %
    Avatar 2009 $2,787,965,087 51.3%
    Titanic 1997 $1,843,201,268 101.5%
    Jurassic Park 1993 $914,691,118 26.3%
    E.T. 1982 $724,304,427 39.7%
    Star Wars 1977 $518,492,133 10.2%
    Jaws 1975 $470,653,000

Gosh, Titanic was such a fucking beast.

Do we know if any sequel has ever been #1? Hard to imagine that would be possible in a pre-Jaws world.

Furthermore, I think its underrated just how much these movies have improved over the years.  I'm not just talking about how mediocre most of the Phase One movies were.  Marvel has a villain problem?  Meet The Vulture, Killmonger, and fucking Thanos.  The soundtracks are dull and uninspired?  Maybe take a listen to Ragnarok, Black Panther, or Endgame's scores.  The movies use color poorly?  Not anymore.  Not enough diversity?  Not anymore.  One of your franchises isn't really working?  Let's give the third movie to an acclaimed comedy director!  Marvel Studios actually listens to their critics.

I agree with this too. They were criticized for these things and they slowly fixed it until it wasn't a problem anymore.

There are still some people who say "BUT THE WINTER SOLDIER AND RAGNAROK ARE THE SAME MOVIEEE11!!", though.

Walt Disney Co's Avengers: Endgame passes Walt Disney Co's Titanic for the #2 spot on the all time worldwide box office and is closing in on Walt Disney Co's Avatar for the all time #1 spot.

(Yes, I know Titanic was Paramount in North America)

I think it's pretty overlooked that it also passed Walt Disney Co's The Force Awakens and Walt Disney Co's Infinity War this weekend.

I fail to see how being a 3rd tier character is an issue in cbm at this point....

Why? You can't apply MCU's goodwill across their whole universe boosting their lower tier projects, to a standalone DC film.

We haven't even seen Sony or Fox succeed with unknown Marvel properties either. If anything, they have managed to turn huge IPs into financial failures

So it isn't a "CBM" phenomenon (or even Marvel's), it's a MCU phenomenon.

  11. In Colombia, as of May 1st, Endgame had 3.07m admissions (over 500k above the industry estimates) beating IW previous first week record of 2.17m admissions.

It also beats lifetime total (Adm, LC & $) of Avatar.

It was also reported that May 1st was the biggest day in Colombia, beating April 27th record (so EG's biggest day might have been that day, or at least really close to Saturday)
