I’ve said before I think the pandemic boosted Dune not hurt it. It was the first real spectacle blockbuster release for the better part of a year and I think a ton of people checked it out who otherwise wouldn’t have (even if it was on streaming).

It’s anecdotal but I have a whole ton of anecdotal evidence of people who aren’t normally into hard sci-fi who watched it and hated it (or were bored more aptly). I would be especially surprised if a lot of the female and/or gen z demo comes back, since the Zendaya and Chalamet of it all seemed to be a big hook for that audience. But seems like once they actually saw it, it was a hard no.

It's funny cause those demos keep saying they have zero chemsitry. Maybe they are just jelly Tomdaya shippers but I'm seeing the zero chemsitry sentiment on Z and/or Timmy friendly spaces. Fauxmoi adores Z yet every time Dune is brought up they shit on Timdaya chemsitry. 🤷‍♂️

If a movie catches fire on Tiktok these days, WOM often isn't as important as "I have to watch it because it's hot on TikTok". It's the easiest way to catch onto the zeitgeist

Exactly. My point was that old metrics don't work for movies whose audience isn't on those old ratings systems (RT, IMDB, CS). That's why BOSAS legs didn't suffer from B+ CS while the same rating spells a disaster for lets say Marvel movies.

That was 400k higher than predictions. I feel this film may have good legs despite divisive reception.

Yeah, its run so far doesn't reflect B score, 66% verified audience (5.8 all audience), 6.1 metacritic audience and 6.4 IMDB. So it seems that it's playing with crowd that doesn't care to rate it online.

Honestly, I think the biggest problem is how few people under 25 years old has attracted this movie. The demographics show there were more men over 25 (21%) than women under 25 (14%).

This would never interest audience under 25. If the studio thought that over-emphasizing Halle Bailey in promos was going to draw TLM crowd they miscalculated badly. The concept isn't for younger people and considering what happens in the movie I don't know why WB went after the church crowd either. 'A' CS aside, WOM must be pretty bad if even the demo didn't bother to carry it. It's a rejection through and through Xmas Day aside.

So many movies to watch, so little time :( already behind on Poor Things, Anyone But You, American Fiction, Mean Girls, The Beekeeper… not to mention the ones still expanding, like All of Us Strangers and Origin!

If I had to catch one this week… which one would y’all recommend?

    ABY

I don't get how they are still this many theaters dropping the movie.  Should have been in around 800 locations, especially given the hold thus far clearly isn't like a typical anime

Not sure if Heron studio is trying the same tactic but movies that expect Oscar nominations tend to drop theaters for MLK weekend or 2 weeks before noms and then go wide after the noms. Usually not super wide (over 1.5K but under 2K) but wide enough.

Signs of hope for adult movies, there was a few decent grossers recently, but this is definitely shaping to be one of the most surprising ones

are adult movies daresay the new SH?

Oppenheimer making SH money, Saltburn going viral like the biggest movies also wrecking the streaming together with Society of the Snow, Poor Things and All of Us Strangers holding well, ABY breaking out, etc.

  9. Mean Girls and Beekeeper are another proof that counter-programing works. One movie for the girls, one movie for the boys and boxoffice thrives. Not saying that this is a mini Barbenheimer (Beegirls? Meankeeper?) but it's certainly working.

Also as other noted, strong year for adult movies. Ofc that nothing will be Oppenheimer ( almost 1B for a 3 hrs long talky) but platform releases are doing really well. Poor Things will pass The Favorite cause it's already running ahead of it if you compare money they made on comparable dates. They play in similar number of theaters now and PT's hold is much better than what TF had for MLK weekend.

Aqauaman 2 didn't collpase dom or OS which is also good. Passed The Flash despite The Flash testing better than TDK and A2 testing worse than The Flash actual reception. :bravo:

I mean it is one of the biggest bombs of all time and dropped 90% from its predecessor. It’s probably one of the most iconic moments in box office history

This. I've never seen Heaven's Gate but I know that it was the biggest bomb of all times that killed a studio, cause whenever something bombs really big they say it's so and so's Heaven's Gate. Golden Compass was New Line Cinea's Heaven's Gate cause it killed the studio. Norbit was Eddie Murphy's Heaven's Gate cause it lost him the Oscar for Dreamgirls. So now The Marvels is the new iconic bomb that will give Heaven's Gate a well deserved retirement.

A lot of y’all’s obsession with The Marvels bombing is getting pretty darn old if you ask me. And weird.

Nah, people are obsessed with the biggest bombs just like they are obsessed with the biggest hits. So you hear about both a lot. I still remember the time when Marvel rereleased Endgame to beat Avatar. And then Avatar got a rerelease to beat Endgame. Likewise, we are always on a lookout for what's gonna bomb worse than the previous biggest bomb. This year was quite productive in that regard.

  12. Just want to point out that we downplay Powell in ABY's success. Was flipping streaming channels and saw that some movie of his I've never heard of is #2 on Netflix coattailing Netflix release of TGM and ABY in theaters. So while concept is the king - Madam Web looks worse than Morbius so doubtful Sweeney can polish that turd - right actors in the right concept are added value.

so Anyone But You is locked to beat  The Marvels? Hilarious

Also Anyone But You won’t help Madame Web like some are suggesting. That movie is making the same mistake as The Marvels for what is trying to be a female appealing movie. Not hot male lead

what's really hilarious is that it's considered hilarious. In a normal world, anyone would guess that ABY would be big with women (romcom, fashionable female lead, hot male lead) while a nerd movie would not. And yet here we are.

Everything except Anyone But You is having horrendous holds

Platform releases are holding well too. I said yesterday that Poor Things was going to outgross TCP this weekend and now we know it beat it on Friday. From half the theaters. Without exaggeration TCP is competing with The Marvels and The Flash for the worst theatrical run. Maybe stop putting The in the title?

  15. TCP and MG have the same problem (pro tip: it isn't musical). They are remakes of stone cold classics. Both Spileberg's TCP and original MG are iconic. Everyone knows Fetch. A remake of an iconic movie has an uphill battle. It has to be as good or better and even then people may not want to pay again for something they've seen 1000 times, just because it now has different cast (that they may not like) and somewhat different take (ditto). That is also why Wonka didn't suffer from musical bait and switch. It wasn't Charlie&the Chocolate Factory remake but a prequel, a "new" thing.

What do they mean by this?

Naomi Ackie can't catch a break. Don't know who she was in her previous life but how can one actress have such a bad karma? Cast in Star Wars so you think big break. But TROS was such (T)POS that they are unlikely to ever revisit her character. Then cast in GOT spinoff Blood Moon, but after HBO sunk 30M in the pilot, it got cancelled and locked in a vault that even GRRM never saw it. To add insult to the injury, the other spinoff HOTD took off spendidly. Lands the plum role as Whitney Houston only for Sony to dump the movie without much promotion even though Ackie got great reviews and they out it in the holiday season. And now this. :sadfleck:

I think Emma Stone is very much a draw in the right role, and I would like to see her finally get her Barbie tentpole (those lame Spideys ain’t it). She could propel the right one to huge numbers.

Speaking of Spideys that was the only question she was asked by the reporters after her Golden Globe win. Was she coming back?
