One big disadvantage that TS4 has is lack of summer weekdays. It’s opening a month away from school holidays which is unusual for big Disney tentpoles but The Lion King has that spot this year and that could pull BatB numbers.

That's true. It feels strange to have a summer Pixar movie opening in the UK and the US simultaneously, in fact I think it's the first time since the studio's inception that this has happened. TLK's release date has definitely facilitated it though, therefore TS4 will be an interesting one to track.

I think that one came out  in January 2016, not entirely certain. I went back and watched it afterwards and I still felt like it didn't reflect the movie's quality, it even had the trailer voice-over guy who went out of fashion in the mid-noughties.

In regards to F2, we'll probably hear more about Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown's roles at D23 as their characters have presumably been absent from the marketing material so far.

Yeah, I don't even know of what movies the main trailer was attached to.

  4. The trailers for Disney Animation movies don't tend to show much of the story, which I really admire. It was great to walk into Frozen, Zootopia and Moana for example not knowing what the crux of their story was and being blown away by the emotional depth and spectacle they boasted. On the other hand, I'm often frustrated with their marketing campaigns because they rely too heavily on comedic moments or humorous side characters which don't do justice to the scale of the films themselves. That's why I'm so thrilled with how Frozen II is shaping up - as usual they're not showing much of the story, but they're actually giving people of all ages reasons to be invested instead of just pandering to the kids with slapstick comedy or seemingly goofy characters.

When I saw some of the visuals in Moana's third act I didn't think Disney could reach those heights again, but amazingly there are moments in this trailer that are just as aesthetically pleasing (I got a warm feeling of Harry Potter nostalgia with that Patronus looking underwater horse).

  5. I'm even more curious now to hear the music that Kristen-Anderson and Robert Lopez have conjured up for this given what we've seen so far. I have to keep reminding myself that despite the Breath of the Wild, Avatar: The Last Airbender-like imagery on display in these trailers, this movie is still a musical.

I think the film itself will have a pretty significant presence at D23, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they parallel what happened at 2013's D23 when Let It Go premiered and have the first official song debut at the convention.

  6. I was hoping this new trailer would follow through on the tone established in the teaser, and to my delight it very much did. I like that, apart from the first 30 seconds of the Youtube version, there are very few shots from the initial teaser that feature in this new one (the autumn imagery which pervaded the former doesn't appear here very often). The animation on display is jaw-dropping, and has convinced me that this is worth IMAX viewing. Loving Elsa's new dress too.

Hats off to the marketing team, they've played a blinder so far. It's a welcome change from the usually lackluster campaigns that are carried out for Disney Animation flicks.

Way early for a Frozen 2 full trailer. Maybe another teaser at the VERY most. It's still over 5 months out. I'd say that D23 is the best time to drop a full trailer.

And as for those other movies (Coco, Moana, Ralph) weren't those their FIRST teasers?

Coco and Moana's teaser trailers came out around this time, but Ralph Breaks the Internet's first teaser came out in February, like Frozen 2's. The first theatrical trailer was released almost a year to the day, so that explains the rationale behind some of us thinking we'll get a full trailer for Frozen 2 soon.

I understand the decision to not have a SDCC panel tbh. None of the movies apart from Birds of Prey will actually be in the stage where they will normally be dropping a teaser or trailer. Joker trailer will be with IT2, WW84 is way too early for a teaser, Godzilla vs Kong is a bit too early, you don't want another case like KOTM where a teaser drops and then there is no follow-up for 6 months.

Weirdly enough, I was actually wondering about the WB panel a couple of days ago in a discussion on Reddit. It really did not seem to me that any of their movies were in the right point in the marketing cycle to benefit from SDCC. A lot of people disagreed with me on Reddit, but I think studios are now of the idea that they want the marketing to come out based on timelines than because SDCC is near. SDCC worked out perfectly for Aquaman and can work for August and September releases, but beyond that it is too early for anything, especially in today's environment where attention spans are much shorter.

Initially I was surprised that WB are pulling out and slightly disappointed because they have tended to release the footage they show online, often way earlier than expected. However, seeing how KOTM and Shazam couldn't maintain the early buzz their Comic-Con trailers generated due to the large gap between the convention and their eventual release, it's probably not a bad move. I could see a Joker trailer still coming out around that time though, having a second one premiere with IT2 would be a bit too close to the former's release.

    This was fantastic.

    Taron is amazing.

After a weak initial 10 minutes it really gets going and doesn’t stop. Hit after hit. Although two (really high profile) songs I love didn’t make it in but it makes sense time wise.

    4/5

I echo those thoughts. The first 10 minutes felt too much like a stage musical rather than a movie musical due to the some of the broad acting and dialogue but once Taron and Jamie Bell come to the fore, Rocketman really...takes off (apologies).

Taron Egerton and Richard Madden singing 'Honky Cat' together is as glorious as I'd imagined.

Yeah theres nothing big in England at the minute so I dont get why late May/early June is so crammed. Im very surprised to see that avengers has hardly any screens, last year infinity war still had a decent amount. Pets moved to aladdins date to get the half term+bank holiday and for some legs before Toy Story drops.

Well next year is the Euros and England are actually playing good now so its going to be interesting to see how the studios change the dates for Fast and Furious, Wonder Woman etc.

It doesn't help that, for the first time since 2008, there's an all-English Champions League final next Saturday, as well as an all-English Europa League final next Wednesday. With that in mind, as much as this weekend will be fascinating, next weekend will be just as intriguing.

What was the last film with really dreadful trailers that everyone was sure would be a mess with critics that turned out fresh?

I guess Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle would be the last major one I can think of that had bad buzz from the early trailers that managed to have a surprisingly solid reception. I may be alone in this but I also remember the initial marketing for Rise of the Planet of the Apes being ridiculed by people online and ultimately it got great reviews.

  12. This upcoming weekend is crazy, 3 movies coming out (Aladdin, Secret Life of Pets 2, and Rocketman) that would probably be #1 most weeks. Between those three, Endgame, Detective Pikachu, and John Wick 3, I don't think I've seen the UK market as crowded in the summer as it is now, especially in May.

  13. If it's the February 2021 release, this thing is going to be unbelievably huge. It's going to be hard to match the achievements of the first, and I'm not even considering the possibility of the sequel out-grossing its predecessor domestically because it's such a tall order, but if 2020 remains as low on huge tentpoles as it does at the moment, then this will be the first proper worldwide event film since arguably The Rise of Skywalker. I'm talking about movies with the potential to gross above $1.3 billion. It'll be the first Marvel sequel since Far From Home too.

  14. I'm skeptical about WW1984 as the worldwide champion because the first movie's overseas numbers weren't anything too special, the domestic gross was around 50% of its total gross if I'm not mistaken. The other thing that makes me cautious is the untitled Pixar movie that opens two weeks afterwards, at least in the US. The first one ultimately didn't have particularly strong competition which enhanced its legs, so if this new Pixar film takes off it might hinder it.

Fast and Furious 9 will drop domestically from F8, but I'm not convinced it's going to drop off in other regions so much that it falls under a billion, and given how this weak 2020 looks I think it might just be enough to make it the #1 worldwide. If it turns out that they're going to space however, then hand them the title right away.

  15. If this April 2020 release actually sticks (which is probably won't given the trend with this movie), that means the gap between the first trailer and the actual release date is 42 months (3 years and 6 months).

Is there any other movie that has had THAT long of a gap between the first trailer and its eventual release, and I'm talking about official trailers, not footage from Comic-Con or anything like that?
