the problem with Captain Marvel is an addition to not being well liked she has no weaknesses. She is Superman without the Kryptonite. She is a base breaking character so the best thing to do is write this character out

Superman is vulnerable to magic as well but I get your point that her having no vulnerabilities is a huge issue. I don't know why they wrote themselves into this corner.

There is definitely some movies that have been massively hit by the lack of promotion. Might have cut 15 mill off the domestic total of something like KOTFM or Haunting in Venice. But Marvels? Nah, bro. Star power isn't an asset without, ya know, star power.

    Exactly!

Iman Vellani- charming but not a star

Teynona Paris - charming but not a star

Brie Larson- has cute moments but comes off as stand-off-ish

I'm not saying this just because she is a woman. Joaquin Phoenix is crap at interviews too but Lady Gaga and a good trailers and other types of marketing will sell Joker 2.

I get that it's juicy seeing the MCU fail this hard but tbh when the franchise that sold itself on its charismatic actors has its biggest bomb when the actors couldn't promote it until it was too late, is it really a fair and square L?

Margot, JLAW and Zendaya know how to do movie star promo. Bless her, she seems like a nice person and she is a great dramatic actor but Brie Larson, who is the lead of the film, is not a charismatic actor on the promo circuit. She doesn't know how to do the movie star thing.

  4. Every studio is reactionary when their back is against the wall. Marvel will be reactionary just like Lucasfilm and WB were. How reactionary, remains to be seen.

I think Rose Tico sucked as a character but the thing to do was to rewrite her into a good character, not nearly totally excise her character from the final Star Wars sequel. That's a lazy tactic. Brie Larson's Captain Marvel will never be loved but Marvel can still continue to work on her as a supporting character. And tone down her powers for goodness sake. She is way over powered.

This new reality of bad BO numbers can make this forum quite a depressing reading at times, at least when compared to pre-COVID

Eh, people were too doomer on here even before COVID. Everything that didn't make a billion dollars was seen as a massive flop. Now that the numbers are actually bad, of course the doomerism is going to get far worse. That's why I'll be mostly staying away from the weekend threads.

Marvels might beat Steel’s record as the worst second weekend drop for superhero flick. I don’t think people are appreciating the magnitude of this bomb

I think that's because some people are still trying to protect it. The Internet believes that going to see 200M movies made by the Disney Corporation is the exact same thing as activism.

  7. I'm going to get a little dramatic here so bare with me.

So many people, including myself, pointed out how weak Carol Danvers was as a character and how bland Larson's performance was but were lumped into the "I hate women" incel club because of that. I know other factors hurt The Marvels as well but in a way I feel vindicated today. I'm a Left leaning woman and I want more movies starring women and I never had issues with CM because it was starring a woman and yet pointing out the issues was seen as wrong or at least giving aid and comfort to the enemy. We have to be able to honestly discuss the flaws in all films, including female led films. Stop claiming that every single criticism of Captain Marvel came from bad men and self hating women. That was never true.

Yeah. The Marvels is partially suffering for the sins of prevous movies.

However, consider the audience didn't make Marvel pay with Guardians 3. So, the situation is "we will make Marvel pay as long as the movie doesn't have characters we care about".

Captain Marvel 1.1 billion dollar gross obfuscated what I have been saying for years. Carol Danvers, as she is portrayed in her first movie, is a dull over powered character who is hard to care about. She's the Henry Cavill Superman of the MCU. People thought the film was fine and fun but never attached to the lead character. So that killed her too late nearly 5 years later sequel.

Plenty of trash movies make money. No, this is more than about the quality of the movie. People just decided they must make Marvel pay for their meteoric success and trash produvt they put out lately. I'm afraid The Marvels is paying the price of Quantumania and the other latest Marvel movies  sucking

It's definitely paying for the sins of Eternals, Love and Thunder, Quantumania and yes despite people denying it because it made a very frontloaded 950M, Multiverse of Madness. But it can only pay for the opening weekend. The word of mouth is all on the film itself.
