How do you gauge that? How can you say "this film had no audience", when the first film made over $1 billion? a.k.a. the biggest solo film for a new MCU character.

Not making a sequel to Captain Marvel was never a reasonable option. I don't think they could have predicted at the time that people wouldn't show up to Captain Marvel 2.

I never said that they shouldn't have made a sequel to Captain Marvel. Of course they should have. They just should have never made THIS sequel. I don't want to get into it too deeply here because people get mad at you when you tell the truth about movie going habits. I'll just say, if you make a 200M movie for women and they don't show up to support it then that sounds like a movie that you shouldn't have made.

Would "It's just like Alice Through the Looking Glass" be better for you?

You clearly want a song and dance. Did you give Alice Through the Looking Glass a song and dance?

Presumably not really because contextually it wasn't really surprising and had been expected for a while. Just as this contextually isn't really surprising and has been expected for a while.

Yes I gave Alice Through the Looking Glass a song and dance because it had an unprecedentedly horrible drop.

Probably a mistake to have a majority of the marketing centered around two characters general audiences haven't seen before. Most of the folks who flocked to phase 3 do not watch the Disney Plus series.

Probably a bigger mistake to even have television characters co-staring in the sequel to your billion dollar hit. Making the sequel to your billion dollar hit look like a Disney Plus series will never be smart. I honestly think this is the biggest blunder that Disney has made in a long time.

We should consider that Black Panther really attracted a bigger black audience that superhero movies regularly don't attract. That's why it was a really big success.

Instead, although Captain Marvel was promoted as the "first MCU movie with a female lead", the main audience was still men at the end. That's why people say a lot of its popularity was related to MCU brand.

I keep having certain posters tell me that 69M of Captain Marvel's opening weekend came from female ticket buyers but I have a question? How come all of those 69M worth of female ticket buyers aren't interested in seeing the sequel? I'd like for that question to be answered.

Yeah cuz NWH had an actual draw. I don't know what the draw is here or who the target audience is.

I think the target audience was women but they thought it would draw in the men who always see Marvel movies in droves. Marvel movies have a good female fan base but they're predominantly directed towards men so I think that they should have had another male character in there that wasn't Samuel L Jackson and preferably in the 30-40 year age bracket. Hey I may be a Lefty SJW feminist but I have box office brain so I always think about these things. I know some people are going to hate me for this but I would never make a 200M action movie with an all female team and villain. I think female led action movies are already at a huge disadvantage and adding more disadvantages on there is playing with fire. Again I just think like a studio head when it comes to these things. Sorry. Lol

Would it be safe to say Marvels is paying for the sins of the first CM?

People saw that movie and didn't understand hype, so they aren't seeing the sequel?

Along with the oversaturation issue, I think The Marvels is paying for the sins of other MCU movies that disappointed people and yes Captain Marvel itself too. Captain Marvel because despite their attempts at a character arc, attempts that I'd argue failed, I don't believe that people latched onto Carol like they did Black Widow. I'm not even a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson but I believe she lended that character a likability and vulnerability that Captain Marvel just doesn't have.

Agreed, it’s somewhat impossible to put a female in front of a movie and doesn’t ended up having a feminine movie at least when it comes to the emotion. I just feel that this was a concern for Marvel so they create a very masculine plot structure and aesthetic.

It worked but i think the movie suffers from not knowing exactly what it want to be. This time being a sequel to a billionaire movie they probably felt they could let the creatives really decides that it wants to be a proud female movie, and in this sense is kinda sad what is happening.

Not that the reception itself is unfair, i didn’t saw the movie, but you can sense a pattern that everytime Hollywood only let minorities being actual part of the projects when it’s too late and nobody cares anymore that much.

And that last paragraph is why I hate how much credit people gave Marvel for its diversity. They waited until the last minute, 10 years in to do these films. They were not ahead of the curve and I will never give them that credit.
