For such an unspecial run that keeps going and just made to $300m dom and it's about to get released in Japan that might pave the way to become the highest grossing superhero film of the year, there are certainly some people here trying very hard to label it as "non special", "ok" and "ordinary".

iJack, why does it matter so much what others think of Spider-man's run? You and a few others think it had an extraordinary run and some other people didn't think it did. Based on its box office performance, the argument is in the eye of the beholder. Those who were expecting an all time run like the Raimi/other MCU movies would be underwhelmed. Judging by the standards of the average movie, the run is very good. It is all about perspective.

  2. These Wednesday numbers are not good so far. Maybe tomorrow will see no significant drops or better yet, slight increases across the board.

I saw Kidnap today, and for the first time in my life, I was alone in a movie theater. There was no one else there. The theater sat 128 and I was the sole ticket sold. The movie was enjoyable for what it offered. Although, it seemed like the first half of the movie was the car chase.

I can definitely understand anyone who comes out of the Dunkirk feeling less than thrilled. I did not like it AT ALL.

I'm not into this comics culture but boxoffice-wise DC does have a long way to go.

Not to mention that they started with the best of what they have (Batman & Superman) and they blew it. They look "kinda" promising now only because of WW.

Isn't The Dark Knight series part of DC? I don't think they blew it with Batman v Superman at all. Those are two enduring heroes that will receive chance after chance just like Spider-Man. I don't hear anyone saying that the Marvel brand was broken because of the ASM series. That's because Spider-Man is timeless. He, like Batman and Superman resonates throughout generations. There will always be room for them.

At the very least it should do 407 dom.

    ~402 by this Sunday.

~403.5 by next Sunday (adding 1.5m over the week)

~404.5 by Sunday after that (1m over the week)

~405.5 by LD Monday (1m over 8 days, Mon-Mon. Assuming no expansion)

~406 by Sunday after that (0.5m over 6 days Tue-Sun)

Rest of the weeks and dollar bump taking it over 407.

Thanks! How much would you guess a LD expansion would add to the total?

  5. I don't think there was a time when no one seemed to care about WW, as far as the general public goes. Studios were just afraid of female centric films. This movie, which basically stars actors who are not household names shows that the public did and does care about WW. WW, the story and the way it came together made people support it.

Sorry but it's just a film that I don't get the appeal of.  I apologize if I wrote too much static about SIL.

I understand. People think I am crazy for never quite seeing the special quality of Shawshank Redemption and Scarface. We are all entitled to our opinions. That is one of the many reasons why movie watching is so fun. I just appreciate the time and effort you've taken to bring all these movies back to our consciousness. Saving Private Ryan is another classic. 1998 was a very good year for movies. The Water Boy, Armageddon, etc. - all very good/great.

  7. " So why did the film resonate with audiences?  Probably because it was so over the top funny in just about every slapstick scene.  The Farrelly's included bits in here that usually aren't part of mainstream comedy.  There's a scene where Ben Stiller decides he's going to masturbate before his date with Cameron Diaz.  This is done on the advice of his friend, played by Chris Elliott.  The reason?  So that he is more calm during the date and if it does get down to sex afterwards, he's already "cleaned the pipes."

Thanks again for the amazing write up. What a classic movie! SAM has so many funny scenes. Brett Favrrrree. LOL

Although, there was some shade thrown at SIL, I appreciate the write up. I fell in love with Joseph Fiennes. He was also excellent in Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett.

    Awesome!

That's what I thought you meant. I did notice on Box Office Mojo that Spider-Man lost a huge amount of theaters after its tenth weekend. I'm curious to know if there was significant competition after that weekend which caused most of the theaters to remove it to make room for newer and more for those competitive titles. There is a possibility that it may crash due to the same reason, but hopefully it doesnt. Thankfully, since school is starting back up, the weekend drops should be lower than normal; however, that means that weekday drops wont look as pretty. But the weekly totals should balance out.

Me too. I wonder why there was such a steep theater drop. I know that at some point it enjoyed double features with Men In Black, but that was probably before Week 10. I can't imagine that it would have dropped so precipitously with double features from Men In Black. I guess people who have followed the box office since 2002 may remember what happened. Could also be that it was par for the course to drop theater counts for block busters after they reached certain benchmarks in 2002.
