I see now why @Lucasmessi12 seems so irritated, he's into this Marvel vs DC war and thinks I'm trying to put DC down...Damn, yes I love Disney very much but I don't care about this tribalism between the 2 brands, a good movie is a good movie, end of story. I love Wonder Woman more than any Marvel solo movie by the way, apart from The Winter Soldier.

Is it possible to have a debate without poisoning the well with tribalism? I just see facts and give my opinions. It's not my fault if Marvel movies are on average a bit stronger than DC ones in Brazil.

Dude, no one here is blind, everyone who frequents this thread and saw you discussions with others older members who frequented this thread , already know that you are Disney fanboy (Disney fanboy, not Marvel fanboy).

You should be like other fanboys of this site who already say they are really fanboy (Marvel, DC,  Disney, Cameron and etc) ,  stop hiding in hypocrisy.

But the Chinese started being racist after seeing the movie? the black super hero didn't bothered them for the presales and OW?  (Unless you are saying they are so stupid to not know that because one poster didn't show the face)

The racist explanation would make more sense if it opened low. It seems more likely to me that the movie didn't click for them. Homecoming also suffered similar harsh drops, are the Chinese racist against British actors or something?

And Black Panther made $105m total in China, it is not far from Ragnarok ($112m),  Spider man Homecoming ($ 116m) and bigger than both Guardians of the Galaxy  movies.

The problem is that some people here think that every superhero movie in China is big  as Infinity war,  Venom or Aquaman...

  3. And continuing...

Exchange rates when Black Panther was released in Brazil were much better, 1 dollar = between R $ 3.20 and R $ 3.30 reais during the period that Black Panther was released, now 1 dollar = R $ 3.90 which is why the dollar difference will be higher, Aquaman has a much worse exchange rate.

I don't find Black Panther's OD but it grossed $3.8m in 2 days so probably close to $1.9m OD. Aquaman seems to be a stronger movie than Wonder Woman  was but maybe not as big as Black Panther.

Wonder Woman total box office in Brazil = R$110m (local currency).
Black Panther total box office in Brazil = R$120m (local currency).

These 2 movies are the 2 biggest solo superhero movies of all time  in Brazil, and Aquaman will open with numbers similar to those 2, but you always try to find something to look like the numbers from  a DC movie is not good, Dude, your bias in favor of Disney films is obvious, and it is so obvious that i find it funny now:lol:

No too sure about China. The jokes for Spiderverse was very dialogue-y and the Chinese are super racist (which is why Black Panther flopped after opening weekend) so having a black lead character isn't going to help.

I don't think so, cause  fast and furious movies are a big success here and most of the main cast is black, and Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel movies always make a big success in China.

Some of the recent superhero ODs:

    Venom - 217 mln RUB

    AMATW - 101 mln RUB

    Deadpool 2 - 179 mln RUB

    IW - 323 mln RUB

    JL - 78 mln RUB

    Homecoming - 138 mln RUB

Wonder Woman - 53 mln RUB

    BVS had 138 mln OD.

Suicide Squad had 260 mln OD

It seems that  Russians like movies with villains and anti-heroes much more than traditional superhero movies, the  difference of performance from Suicide Squad, Deadpool and Venom compared with traditional superhero movies is huge.

Isn't that even worse for OS markets? Markets like Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia..were much smaller during Phase 2 because they experienced a crazy growth these last few years, much more than Brazil.

Exchange rates are better in the MCU phase 2 era, that balances things, And come on, we're talking about three/four year old movies, not 15 year old movies, those markets you talked about didn't triple in size in that time or something like that.

But right, let's compare only MCU movies from now and from a brand that is  much more recognized Overseas because it already has more than 20 films, and that already is in Phase 3 where all these phase 3 movies are sequels  and compare with the beginning of the DCU, it is much fairer in your opinion,  Right?:D

Comparing current DC movies and Phase 2 MCU wouldn't be a good way of measuring it either because the Brazilian market fairly grew since Phase 2, reaching R$100m is easier now than it was a few years ago.

I'm talking about all OS markets, not just Brazil.

If we can not compare DCU movies from now with 2 phase MCU movies, I do not see how we can compare 3 phase MCU movies (more than 20 movies and all  sequels) with the first 5 DCU movies , this is much more unfair.

Brazil is a friendlier territory for DC movies, they always outperformed here compared to the global average, probably the market where Marvel and DC are the closest in terms of market share.

We cant say it because it is not fair, you're probably comparing  3 phase MCU movies with DCU movies that are at the beginning, MCU phase 3 movies has a help from a much more consolidated/recognized brand because there are already more than 20 films while DCU is going to 6 now , in addition most of these phase 3 MCU movies are sequels and  sequels of the big Hollywood franchises have a growth at foreign markets compared to  original movies (this happens in about 80% of the cases).

What we can do is compare the supposed phase 2 of DC (pos JL) with phase 2 of the MCU (pos Avengers ) will be a much fairer comparison because DCU will have a more recognized brand  OS and will have sequels in it (Wonder Woman 84 and probably Suicide Squad 2, maybe even Aquaman 2),

Only thing we can say is that Avengers started much bigger than Justice League and left a much better impression for audience, but that's it,  DCU can recover in the next films and in others IP.

Well, yeah. I said it was what I expect.

My part about Justice League is just "in case", it's important to think about possibilities.

As for Aqualan's WOM it's still a bit early to say for sure, there's no RT average or reviews wait, at least outside of China.

Reviews here are very good (better than in  USA), WOM seems to be very good too, at least for what I've seen so far, But yeah, let's wait to see  reactions when we have a larger sample.

WHAAAAT? spiderverse will beat out Aquaman? >:)

Not uncommon, Lego Batman did more in the UK than Wonder Woman , In other Overseas markets that spiderverse will have difficulty in making numbers near Aquaman (maybe in South Korea and  Japan he can beat Aquaman).

I'm confused as to why the film wouldn't do well overseas? I realize that it being an animated Spider-Man film means it's going to do less dough than a live-action SM film would (I'm assuming) but it's still Spider-Man. This should have some crazy WOM and have a very healthy WW take.

Because Lego Movie / LEGO Batman did not do well overseas, I think Spiderverse can behave in the same way as these movies.
But maybe spiderverse will do much better OS than expected (at least for me), let's see

Predicted to do 45 million this weekend from gavin is that a good hold? i dont think it can hit 300 million with those numbers .

Nobody expected that Aquaman was going to make even $200m in China before it has released,  let alone $300m.

I remember that even 2 days before Aquaman open, I was thinking it would be hard to make $60m OW ($130m total) because  presales were not increasing as expected.

Niche in that animated superhero films are generally speaking an adult niche. Spidey may not be in general as a character but the medium is.

Agree, but this film needs to do well in the domestic market (not a cheap movie at all) and I'm with a feeling that it will not do well overseas.

But better wait to see what's going to happen, so many surprises this year.

I'm not Brazilian and don't go on Brazilian forums so there's nothing I can tell about early buzz but everything about Aquaman gives me Blacl Panther vibes somehow so I expect a similar start and similar total but I could be wrong given Justice League underperformed compared to expectations.

BP started at R$31m OW and ended at R$120.9m

Yeah, but Justice League do not have good WOM (not even among DC fans, it is probably the DCEU movie that fans like less ), Aquaman WOM so far is great , it will not have big opening as Justice League but definitely will have better legs , I think that Aquaman will be in the range of Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Homecoming and Ragnarok (biggest solo SH movies in Brazil).
