  1. WB did a Super Bowl ad for this. It was their first major Super Bowl ad in nearly 20 years. They wouldn’t have done that if they weren’t pulling all the stops in trying to sell this thing. Let’s also not forget all those hyperbolic endorsements from celebrities and influencers, including Tom Cruise and Stephen King.

Frankly, I don’t understand why this was the movie WB chose to bet so much on, but I suppose that’s in the past now.

  2. I wouldn’t dare try to dispute the idea that Barry Jenkins is genuinely passionate about The Lion King, but I’m fairly certain that Disney hiring was mainly so they could have a prestigious name (“From Academy Award Winner Barry Jenkins”) attached to this project than anything else. No matter how much personality Jenkins may want to insert into the film, he’ll still have to follow the usual Disney notes.

Captain Marvel's audience score wasn't by verified, like TLK 2019's was. Like those scores for TLK were only from people who bought tickets on fandango, whereas anyone could leave a review for Captain Marvel.

Yeah, the whole reason Rotten Tomatoes even has verified audience scores now is because trolls kept review bombing Captain Marvel.

The way this site gasses up sonic 3 is nuts. In no universe is sonic a bigger IP than the lion king, i’m sorry haha

It wouldn’t really need to be a bigger IP to hypothetically make more at the box office. I still think this’ll make more worldwide, but Sonic 3 winning at the domestic box office wouldn’t surprise me at this point.

Yep. Leave it to modern-day Disney, who've completely lost the plot, to miss the whole point of what made Scar's betrayal of Mufasa so dark and interesting in the original TLK. He does that to his own brother. Way to rob that scene of all its potency by revealing they're not blood brothers. Then again, this movie will be forgotten as quickly as the CG remake from a few years ago, while the 1994 classic will continue to stand tall. This will be the tree that fell in the forrest but no one remembers that it did.

Not only that, but the fact that Scar was so eager to kill his own nephew when he was just a cub further served to highlight his cruelty.

  6. “This looks like A.I.” is basically just a fancy new way of saying that something looks like crap.

Anyway, my expectations are pretty low here. I have a bit more faith with this than I do with the 2019 film, simply because Barry Jenkins is mo Jon Favreau, but I’m still expecting a safe cookie cutter Disney product.
