Most people on box office forums agree it's miserable. Though for me the internet doesn't appreciate how damn huge TLJ's 220M debut is.

And also speaking of TFA, NWH opened higher but only because of inflation. In terms of admits I think it's like 22.6M NWH vs 23.8M TFA

Not only was the hype for TFA absolutely insane (Star Wars as a brand was completely inescapable in the last few months of 2015), but it came out at a far healthier time for movie theaters compared to when NWH released.

  2. I have no clue how this will turn out, but hey, kudos to The Rock for finally stepping out of his comfort zone. Everyone was ragging on him for playing basically the same role in every movie, so this is clearly uncharted territory for him, and to think all it took was for Black Adam to flop. The thought of him campaigning for an Oscar somehow sounds more out there than him running for President though.

  3. Regarding Coppola’s alleged behavior, I wouldn’t say I’d be surprised at the idea that Coppola is a dirty old man. He is the same guy who went to bat for Victor Salva. With that said, it also wouldn’t surprise me if these stories about him harassing female actors and being generally unprofessional were planted by someone in the industry to set a particular narrative.

I mean he's said he wants to make The Fountainhead into a movie

He also said that he doesn’t agree with Ayn Rand’s philosophy, and there’s really nothing about his filmography that’s particularly “Randian”. A major theme in his movies is self-sacrifice, which goes completely against Ayn Rand’s ideals.

Snyder said that he likes The Fountainhead specifically for its statements about what it means to be an artist who never compromises. He also said that he no longer intends to make the movie because he believes it’s not the right time for something like that. The idea that he loves Ayn Rand was a narrative that Devin Faraci spread back in 2016.

That’s all I’ll say on the matter, because I know that derailing this thread with a topic like that is bound to get me in trouble, if it hasn’t already.

Anyway, this movie looks interesting, but I can see why studios would be hesitant to distribute it. It doesn’t look like something with much mainstream appeal, and I would t expect it to be a big Oscar winner.

It honestly kind of seems to be going for a weird Atlas Shrugged vibe and aesthetic, so Snyder actually kind of tracks given that fascist Randian stuff seems to be his whole deal. Obviously don't think it's going to be a Snyder quality film lol.

    Sigh

I see that narrative’s not going to die out anytime soon.

    No?

Disney would be in a much worse position if it didn't have Disney Plus right now.  Look over at, say, Paramount and how it's trying to scramble with its much lower tier streaming platform.  Or how Comcast is doing with Peacock.  Or, hell, Sony which has practically nothing.

What they might regret is how they tried to chase after Netflix and commit too many resources to going "all in".   But then again the entire industry fucked up by trying to copy Netflix, leading to — or at least accelerating — the shift from one of the most profitable business models the US entertainment system ever had (the multichannel bundle) to a very much less profitable one.

The fallout from the shift from where 85% of all households in the US had some form of multichannel bundle to the massive market fragmentation where everyone is fending for themselves (even with an occasional superbundle like the Disney/Max one thrown in) is gonna be felt for a looooooooong time.

Anyway, Disney Plus's undeniable strength is in its legacy programming/library.  Where it is falling down is getting a reliable set of *NEW* programming on a regular basis.

That was what I was primarily referring to? The whole reason all these streaming services exist in the first place is because these companies tried to chase the Netflix model, and it backfired spectacularly. It’s gotten to the point where they’re starting to do bundles.

I obviously wasn’t suggesting that  Iger would kill Disney+, if that’s what you inexplicably thought I was implying. I’m aware that doing something like that would be even more disastrous at this point.
