It's not really about having to lower expectations. It's more about comparing two completely different film medium: cartoon vs live action. More can be done with cartoon that, if done with live action, would look really really awkward. But it seems as though this one is awkward enough.
People want original ideas. Disney has made several GREAT original films in the past few years. They include Frozen, Brave, Moana, Coco, Finding nemo, Up, Inside Out, Zootopia......you get the drift. Their originality comes in their animation which, until they bought Marvel, SW, and started the remakes, was what they were known for (and still should be).
It's Disney's fault for doing these films and making them so dang common now. We're getting 3 in the span of a year. It should be one or two otherwise they don't feel special. And it definitely shows when a beloved film like Aladdin is getting a LA adaptation that is almost borderline rotten already.

Holy crap even Jeremy of all people is calling it a mixed bag. Also listening to his review I'm appalled at the choices Disney made with their unlimited amounts of money.

There is no excuse for one of most popular movies of the Disney Renaissance to have a live action adaptation be a 58%. Dumbo I can understand but Aladdin, come on Disney, this is just embarrassing.
This movie has never been able to catch a break from negativity and now it shows in the final product as well. No more giving it the benefit of the doubt, another dud in Disney's live action library critically speaking.

Mulan is really a great movie, i really hope Disney don't **** with this, it have so much potential for a live action, probably one of their classics that most fit a live action remake, and also could do huge numbers if it delivers.
with the changes they're making to Mulan yeah it's going to be a massive f up.

guys please stop replying to my post like you think i've only heard of four comic book movies. i'm aware of all these films.
Yet you seriously think Suicide Squad is worse then Batman and Robin the movie that KILLED the Batman film brand for 10 years and was a movie solely used to sell toys. Or Catwoman which is purrfectly terrible. I would love for you to name one thing that is good about Catwoman.

genuinely can't think of a comic book movie that's worse than suicide squad.
....Seriously?
Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Hellboy(2019), X-Men: The Last Stand, Fant4astic Four.

Solid numbers for Pikachu. It's still the #1 movie International. The power of the Pokemon brand is real.

i can't get over how much mena massoud sounds exactly like the guy who did the singing for aladdin in the original animated movie. are we sure they didn't just bring him back to sing all his parts again?
Only difference is the guy whom sang for Aladdin can actually sing and didn't have to be autotuned. Can't say the same for anybody in this cast.

Wonder if this will go PG-13 or R
If they want it to actually have a chance at grossing a good amount, and being looked at as respectful to the source, Rated R.

Look when what you have to say about the a live action of arguably one of the Disney Renaissance's most beloved films is "pretty good" or "meh" then that is not a good sign.

@Cappoedameron This comes out in March 2021, WB already has a shit ton of family movies programmed for 2020 and 2021 - none of which are Pokémon related - and you assume they will get a new Pokémon movie fasttracked to before Mortal Kombat comes out? Detective Pikachu isn't even doing numbers so out of this world that demand a next entry anyway. Why are you so obsessed with telling everyone that Pokémon is getting a cinematic universe? Pikachu will be lucky to sneak past Warcraft as the highest grossing video game movie ever, and Warcraft made less than 50 million DOM, for fuck's sake.
Sequel is happening, already been confirmed. Stop being a hater if you can, thanks.

I'm probably gonna make a Mortal Kombat reboot > Pikachu WW club at some point. I don't see He-Man doing well enough for an interesting fight
Bold of you to assume Pikachu won't have another movie out before this releases. In fact 2021 is probably when the next Pokemon film will come out.

Yeah this was their Incredible Hulk. Red/blue will be their iron man.
I would not say this was Incredible Hulk. I mean IDK anybody that liked this film, and at least general consensus is audience liked this film.

And so begins the rise of the PCU. And honestly I think a sequel will only be better, they know the things to work on and the things they got right.
As far as Box Office goes it's not gonna compete with the 2nd biggest film of all time, so it won't have any of it's buzz completely destroyed going towards it's release.
There are rumors Pokemon Red/Blue is moving forward as well.

Pikachu was way lower than Aladdin at the same point on Wang numbers.
And tracking is $ 80M 4-day, but deadline says it could do $ 100M and some experts are expecting that. I don’t expect a big hit to be honest, i always think OS numbers will save the movie and i still think that, but DOM doesn’t seems bad though, just average, basically Pirates 5 again.
Mixed/Negative reviews could effect numbers as well just look at Dumbo. Which is just a sad comparison because Aladdin is a very uplifting, exciting, vibrant film. But the LA remake just looks like it sucked everything that made the original film what it was.

Last week all sites overestimated Endgame and Pikachu. Obviously its better to wait until today's number before saying its being overestimated, but that must be some hold from the tuesday number.
I think they're overestimating both John Wick and Endgame. Endgame drops have been pretty big the first two weeks, why should we expect now is when it's gonna hold?

Endgame's 36 million i don't really buy since it has not been holding well. I think 28 million is what Endgame will end up with this weekend.
That would be on par with the past weekend drops I'm also not buying JW 50 million opening yet. Trades have it at 35 million.

They're being very generous with JW3 and Endgame. I thought trades were tracking JW3 for a 35 million debut and Endgame drops 59 one week and 57 the next so now they expect it to stabilize? They're being very generous here.

They can use the theme in one of the last trailers to send the hype train to the moon.
Shoot they already have a trailer theme already made, and it's hype as hell.
But no matter what year it is, this has to be how the movie starts.

They’re trying to get China so I doubt it.
That movie is going to do bad everywhere else. How is it Disney's Mulan if there's no Shang, no Shan Yu, no Mushu, no songs, Mulan has a random sister, and the villain is a witch. That has bomb written all over it.

-
Do you think if this underperforms Disney will think twice about the radiical changes to Mulan? Cause that movie is gonna bomb.
-
This movie just cannot catch a break. Now the Prince Ali performance is causing bad signs on top of some very mixed reviews. Aladdin could end up performing lower then expected.

Yeah gonna be fun to follow movie and see the legs it has especially with summer holidays soon and exams
im kinda looking forward to other movies releases. So detective Pikachu can follow be in shadow and not be emphasized. I can just look at numbers in peace without someone calling it a bomb every 2 secs lmao
It's not a bomb and at least now we know how we can track the sequel.
