In this decade, 2010 onward, his only hickup was J Edgar in 2011. The rest of them - Shutter Island, Inception, Django Unchained, Great Gatsby, The Wolf of Wall Street and The Revenant were big hits. It's a mightily impressive run considering none of these movies is a franchise and some aren't even the usual action/sci fi/fantasy spectacles that attract audience no matter who stars.

He makes safe choices, all of them are directors with several box office hits or awards winnings before he worked with them. I think Brad Pitt or Ryan Gosling make more courageous choices but still no one can deny the incredible impact Di Caprio had for these movies.

The renevant made 532 M dollars, it's incredibile, only because of Leonardo Di Caprio and his very talk oscar worthy performance.

Nowadawys is more than rare. Put an original movie with Di caprio on Netflix, whatever movie and you will have easily the record of views for a movie untill now.

Once upon a time will do great numbers everywhere, it won't be a bomb in any way. Pitt and Di Caprio are real true global superstar, really really global. And well Tarantino alone of course is a famous brand too.

  2. R.I.P to all the Chris WHOS in the marvel movies

Leonardo DiCaprio is the only global superstar left in a film industry in which an interchangeable group of actors suit up in spandex or brandish a lightsaber for the latest billion-dollar earner. Here's my deep dive on his career.

BTW I didn't get the trailer for Cats before my showing of The Lion King yesterday and that was the most disappointing part of the whole experience lol (movie was alright). I guess Universal decided Abominable would be a much much much less nightmare-ish choice to stick before it instead.

Cats it just ...cats. I don't get all this hate, I guess it's just an easy target for the geeks fan and smart people on the internet, people who love smart movie and characters like the ant man (loool). The Movie can be very good for the fans of the show and musicals. The singing animals of the lion king are not less cringe for what i saw in the clips.

I guess what some are trying to say is Richard Madden isn’t exactly a household name.

I could say to my buddies (who all saw Bodyguard and GoT) “Richard Madden is in Eternals!” and they’d be like “who?”

they’d recognise his face, but that would require seeing a picture/watching a trailer etc.

Yet Angelina Jolie is a STAR. Whether that be because of celebrity, her famous dad, her time with Pitt, her humanitarian stuff, Lara Croft...whatever. She is a superstar. Stick her name above a movie and it’ll mean something to people. Madden isn’t that.

A star is someone you don’t need to explain who they are to people. That is something money can’t buy.

My brother watch all the marvel movies because of the brand but he doesn't know who Chris Patt is. Weeks ago we were watching Passengers and he said to me "I know him, Where i saw him?".

I bet in America is different cause actors make talk show appareances, awards shows and so on so they can reach easily the general public with their "true identity" but i can garantee you for example here in Italy you're not a star just because you were in a succesfull blockbuster movie inspired by a famous book or comic book.  Or because you won an Oscar. For example this year the news gave  more space to Lady Gaga's win for a song than Regina King's win, cause the success of the movie here or the fame of the winner are important.

If I show to someone Richard Madden's face and he says to me "Oh wait, i saw him. Sure! He's Nedd Stark's son" doesn't mean he is a movie star  (with star i mean a recognized name who brings people in the cinemas) but just a know face. Like the face of the champion of a famous quiz show.

    Salma Hayek is a star

Richard Madden got alot of exposure from GoT and is an emerging star.

Plus I have a sneaky suspicion that captain marvel is going to be in this movie.

    "Salma Hayek is a star"

mhhh you're not wrong but i don't think she's that huge star.

Richard Madden is not a star in any way. Being casted in something famous doesn't make you a star, A star for me is someone 9 people on 10 on street if you just show them the face. And with recognize i mean associate a name to a face, not "yes maybe i saw this face somewhere.".

You wrote ALL star cast.  The others definitely are unknown names.

  6.  I like the idea of a female Thor but Portman's character was one of the worst in all the marvel movies and I really don't like her,  her jackie was so annoying and scholastic, i liked her only on the black swan cause the character was repressed like her boring acting is.

I don't think she will be a lesbian or bisexual thor, Valchiria will have definitely another love interest. Anyway as gay person I find cringe and embarassing you have to say "I'm gonna be gay" at the comic con even before the film is made. This screams sad marketing so loud. Make it a normal thing people can discover when they are watching the movie. Like when Disney made all that noise for the """""""gay scene""""""""""""" on beauty and beast". Sad.

I think here and in the Eternals will be something more explicit in this issue, cause they are not branded disney movies but nothing so really open.

So much hate for Disney and Marvel. They have a proven track record. Other studios would be dumb to go up against them if it could be avoided. Eternals is going to be a big cosmic movie with an all star cast. Shang chi is introducing one of Marvel's biggest villains and should do insane business in China. Strange has huge breakout potential after the reaction he got in endgame plus it's going in a horror direction which is a new angle. And after the success of Ragnarok, Thor 4 is going over a billion. The only one I'm unsure of is black widow. Could be big but I need to see a trailer first.

    ????

    the only star is Angelina

Nobody was talking about internet hype.

"This. I'm not feeling the buzz offline. When I say I want to see this people blink. It's only an anecdotal evidence but maybe something is up."

Anyway even Kill bill got a 40M first weekend with inflation.

  9. What hype do you want on the internet? It's not a marvel movie with noisy annoying fans.

People with taste in cinematic art are there waiting for finally a movie event in this summer there is something original and not a video game for kids.

It's Mr. Di Caprio first movie in 3 years, that's already an event. I'm here for not less than a 50M first weekend.

The Souvenir isn't coming anywhere near a Best Picture nomination (The Farewell is already on track to make significantly more money and will be A24's main push) and neither is Rocketman or especially Frozen 2 (if Inside Out couldn't manage a Best Picture nomination, why would this?).

Why Beauty and the beast and why not The lion King. Who knows.

I will cross post what I said on a different board, and hold up, this is going to be a long one. Credits to @Durden, for sharing the tweet that gave me access to the actual interview.

It goes without saying that what she said is tone deaf and that we have the right to be royally pissed off, especially due to her past casting choices. With that said, Vulture also did a real poor job with this article. Why? Vulture never linked to the actual interview that Scarlett gave to the painter / artist David Salle for AS IF Magazine, only linking to the Daily Mail as the source of the interview.

It’s still bad, but I do think that it was somewhat taken out of context:

    https://www.asifmag.com/story/scarlett-johansson-david-salle-collaboration-with-as-if-magazine

Yes, it’s obviously a fan account, but it does raise a good question: Vulture, via Daily Mail, seems to have ignored some of the nuances of the conversation, mainly this bit:

It’s still bad, tone deaf and entitled, but the full conversation seems way more complex than Vulture and Daily Mail made it sound.

Long story short: We need to do better than the Daily fucking Mail as source, and Scarlett still needs to get her shit together, but it’s more nuanced than what is currently been reported.

Both are crap journals. Why are you surprised?.

  12. Really a bad year for WB. Lego, godzilla, Shazam, Pikachu.

They should just remake My Fair Lady  with Cardi B. Written, acted and directed by Henry Cavill.

Or release the next Clint movie in 2 parts.

Rocketman is really disappointing everywhere. Its budget is only 40M dollars so it's not a glop but the expactions, the marketing, the distribution wa really high level everywhere and i think it will end is run under 200M WW.

You should look at data more often. The big opening leads to smaller jumps on Saturday only when there's some rush factor and frontloadness, which usually isn't the case for family movies in Italy. Going by your post, Beauty and the Beast (which opened on Thursday - meaning less time to 'stabilize' - and had a Friday above 1.1M) should have increased like 80/90% on Saturday. Instead, it went from 1.110 to 2.350, for a 112% jump. And that was by far the more anticipated Disney LA of all. Also, the average % increase yesterday was higher than it was on BatB's first day. Cinderella also went up 164% on its first Saturday, and Dumbo 140%. And Jungle Book 145%. When ALL previous titles increase more than you do on an overall very strong day, your specific number is disappointing. End of the story.

If a movie makes 850k on friday and it's a family movie is easier having a 160% increase on saturday. If a movie makes 2 M on friday it's more difficult a 160% increase cause the movie just doesn't have the space to do 2 M + the 160%

And Aladdin has more teens and adults in its audience than cinderella so it's pretty normal biggest weekdays and lowest weekend jumps lol.

Your post is useful, who cares about maleficient and cinderella biggest jumps but  with a lot less money? This makes aladdin disappointing? The last word in the universe for what aladdin did in thiis weekend in Italy is disappoiting.

  14. Why do you have some expectation about booksmart. because of metacritic? Who cares about metacrtic, only to the fanboys of blockbusters care about it. Surely not to teens, girls or not.

Anyway as someone just said Netflix release a teen movie like that every week. Maybe it just needed Noah Centineo in it.

The marketing of Aladdin hadn't nothing wrong as the box office is showing,  "looking like bollywod is weird" (Yeah racism has something to do with it) isn't bad marketing. Imagine thinking a teaser trailer with Will Smith as the genie is bad marketing. Only for the memeboys around.

The only bad choice from disney is the release date, so close to dumbo, end game and toy story 4 and with The Lion king as Live action event of the year in people minds. Aladdin deserved to be the live action event of the year.

A star is born, Bohemian, The greatest showman, La La Land are all musicals, nothing new. Musicals are doing great in this decade, well loved in all anglophone markets, Asia, Australia. Rocket Man is the next.
