BR could “only” do 52M and that was arguably as big as these biopics get. Michael I have no doubt will have more interest, but I feel that the controversy it’ll inevitably cause could hold it back on OW, especially if the movie isn’t marketed as a “concert movie” like BR was.

while we’re on the subject of musical biopics, I did not have Ridley Scott’s Bee Gees movie on my bingo card.

Early prediction: one billion disco balls.

  2. Wednesday OS numbers from Variety for OL:

    Quote

Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love” stirred things up at the Valentine’s Day box office. The biopic about the reggae legend is outpacing estimates after opening to $14 million domestically. It added $4.9 million to its haul from 10 overseas markets, including the U.K., France and Spain. Its global gross stands at $19.4 million.

A rare Cmasterclay W on the One Love number - I've been calling it for weeks. As much as I love these boards and find it full of brilliant people, some of the posts about Marley and his place in the culture were stark reminders that this place is still an internet message board of young white guys. Never made sense to comp it to Whitney or Aretha remotely - Marley transcends in a different way (also both those movies would have made more money in their own right without COVID and poor marketing).

I completely agree and think people are still underestimating OL, both domestically and internationally.

Madame Web and One Love Thursday totals

Madame Web: 132 tickets sold. 25% of Wednesdays totals from Wednesday morning pull.

One Love: 305 tickets sold, 24% of Wednesdays total taken from Wednesday morning.

I think we're looking at 75% drops for both. High, but understandable.

Yeah, it’s a non-holiday Thursday in February. Big drops are inevitable. Based on the Cinemascores, OL will be fine. MW on the other hand might as well call it a run now.

most of people today in theaters for OL are the singer’s fans, so don’t expect it to have many bad reviews too early lol

I think more balanced reviews to OL only during the weekend and next week when the number of causals will be way bigger than the singer’s fans

I actually think it’s more the other way around. The casuals are just going for the music. If anyone is going to get bent out of shape about this film, it will be the hardcore fans.

That said, yes, of course it’s not going to stay at 100. Already down to 97.

    That’s a ridiculous jump lol

Edit: hmm. There was T mobile offer but still insane.

Two things. One, at least domestically they are marketing the hell out of this film. Just heard my second freakin radio spot for it this morning driving into work (on Q101 here in Chicago if anyone cares). Basically if you don’t know there’s a Bob Marley movie coming out today, you’re in a coma or dead.

Second, there’s just nothing else out. Your V-day date night choices are One Love or Madame Web, and the latter is at 16% on RT.

Dakota Johnson must have the worst agent on Earth - she's genuinely talented but her post-Shades career has been awful (she was amazing in Suspiria but that movie unsurprisingly bombed).

apparently she fired her representation because of this film.

Thanks for the clarification everyone, I thought that Bob Marley was doing a Color Purple and VD was extra inflated for it for some reason then it was falling off a cliff.

It has sell outs here tomorrow night, so seems like it could do well other places. Crazy to me that it’s 6 day will be more than Whitney Houston’s total.

it’s also been drifting upward on RT. Now at 42. Won’t get to fresh but at least it won’t have a scary number in the teens like MW.

Im not sure how anyone can say this film or that film had a bigger promo campaign since we dont know but in the United States I've seen ads for Marley non stop for the past few weeks.

Yeah, aside from Dakota’s press tour there’s been nothing. I haven’t even seen a MW trailer in theaters, while Marley’s been in front of everything, including The Zone of Interest I saw last weekend. And One Love ads have been everywhere.

  10. I suspect this will do fine. Skimming the reviews so far, the consensus seems to be that it’s an uninspired, paint-by-numbers biopic overall, but Ben-Adir is getting praised for his performance and the music is, natch, great. And really that’s why most people are going to this to see (and hear): the big hits. they're going for Jammin and Redemption Song, not some deep insight into Marley.

The numbers are for Tuesday, so the increase should be due to Tuesday discount.

Yup. Still, 90% is a nice bump. Likely just that the film has a bunch of popular actors and people are like, yeah, the reviews suck but I like Cavill/Cena/Rockwell/whoever and it’s half price so why not?

  12. Ok I’ll join the pile-on. At my local Cinemark, MW is drawing a complete blank. 3 shows on the 14th, 4 on Friday and 5 on Saturday, all in their biggest barn, and not a single ticket sold.

The Emagine up the road is a tiny bit better in that it has sold 2, count ‘em, 2 tickets (and for a PLF show at that) on the 14th. The 8 other shows haven’t sold anything tho.
