Has Deadline often lowballs the prediction for Friday when they updated at 5pm?
Godzilla total locations this weekend increases from last week....
it did but only by about 200 screens and lost PLFs at the same time. And yeah it’s still early, walk-ups could bump the numbers up a bit.

Hmm.... including the previews, I hoped the Heron got close to 6m
Godzilla is also lower than expected?
there were some higher hopes for Godzilla but they went around the horn with Shawn in the buzz thread and settled on 6 so I’d say about as expected. Deadline often lowballs tho so we will see.- 1

They just extended the run to the 14th i believe, but ofc i hope they will extend it much further. I also see the potential for a really leggy run here if they just let the movie have enough theaters for a while. I mean i would have loved 11M in TOTAL for this movie before it came out (topping Godzilla 2000), but i really feel like the movie gains momentum every day with its WOM right now and theaters should want to capitalize on that.
Yeah, WOM still seems like it’s building. For example when I logged on to YouTube tonight the algorithm served me half a dozen reviews done in the last day or less, including Cinemassacre (3.8 million subscribers) which just put a review up a few hours ago. There’s no reason for theaters to rush this out the door. -
$685k (-67%) for Napoleon, per the numbers.

Yeah that’s a great hold for Minus One. I would have been happy with 800k.

80% on RT out of 55 reviews 7.5 out of 10 average rating. I just can't stop thinking this is Mary Poppins Returns all over again from the RT score, to the release date, to it being a musical.
Big problem with MPR was that the songs sucked. Musicals live and die by their music (I know, duh, but it bears repeating). If Wonka has a banger or two on the soundtrack, it will make bank. If not, it will fizzle.- 1

It has standard shows where I am.
Same. Actually playing at my local cinemark, which completely surprised me. Between this and Minus One they may have just set a new annual record for number of subtitled movies shown.- 2

Noted today: I didn’t have any premium screen options for Minus One over the weekend, but the Emagine by me just added an EMX screening today.

How does that rank overall for a live action Japanese film opening?
Per Collider, No. 1.https://collider.com/godzilla-minus-one-global-box-office-34-million/
Also the No. 2 foreign-language live-action debut ever behind Hero (2002).

I’ll eat some crow on this one, that is a massive Saturday increase (+42% from TRri) for a film that all indications was going to have limited GA appeal and much smaller
I wouldn’t be surprised if Sunday ends up coming in a bit higher. It’s still selling very well at theaters around me today.

Bummer it didn’t do better. I enjoyed it. Fun, breezy romp that told its story and got out. Flerkin bit in the third act was worth the price of admission alone. Iman Vellani (and basically the whole cast of Ms. Marvel) stole scenes left and right. They’re really good, they should do more with them. Wish they did more with Teyonah Parris’ Photon. Clearly there was a reconciliation arc with CM in there that got cut out. Brie did a fine job, loved the princess scene. Agree that $200 million was absurd for this, but that’s an all-over-Hollywood problem right now. No one seems to be able to control a budget lately. In the long run though it’s a self-correcting problem.

Today’s odd occurance: I’ve never seen my local Cinemark add a movie on its opening weekend, but it just happened. Months ago, I added Godzilla Minus One to my watchlist on the app and it pinged me with a notification tix were on sale a few weeks ago. Awesome…except not at the theater 5 minutes from my house. No, it was showing at two other cinemarks, one an hours’ drive east and another an hours’ drive west. Insert sad trombone sound here.
Fortunately the movie was showing at an Emagine about 15 minutes away, and that’s where I and my family eventually went today. I did check my cinemark app Thursday just in case they had added it at my local one, but no. But I checked just now and hey presto! Five shows at my local cinemark! Too late, but just thought I would mention it. Never seen such a late add before.
FWIW my Emagine showing today was sold out, the next one only had a handful of seats left, the third show today has a dozen seats left and the last show is about a third sold.- 7

Just got back. Absolutely marvelous. It deserves all the praise it’s getting and more.

The Regal IMAX near me has a 7:30 showing tonight which has been on sale for weeks and is north of 95% full. They added a 3:15pm IMAX showing back on Wednesday and it has sold a whopping 6 tickets so far.
My local Cinemark added five “early access” shows today starting at 2. They had sold a combined 6 tickets when I looked yesterday. Up to 53 now. So…yay?

Cineplex has started adding Thursday night shows. Only one theatre in my area so far, but I anticipate more. It's already sold about 10 tickets though.
No Friday matinees showing up yet.
Yeah, my local cinemark has added a 6 pm show tonight which has sold 30 tix so far and 5 early shows Friday that have sold a combined 6 tickets so far.

Well, I guess since they have nothing better to do (you know, strike and all) studio execs have ample time to gossip to the press. So here we go again with another “how it all happened” piece.

A $100 million OW seems to be the emerging consensus right now. It will probably go higher.
