Went today with my wife and MIL. The verdict: no one liked it. 0 for 3. Their main complaint was that it was too long. I couldn’t disagree, this is a slog. It’s rare that I don’t like a musical, but even the song and dance numbers couldn’t hold my attention, maybe because for obvious reasons they are all gospel/blues based and it gets kind of one-note after a while.
I have not read the book or seen the original film, so I can’t comment on that aspect of it, but both my wife and MIL have. They felt it did not do the original story justice.
I will say it’s pretty to look at, the dance numbers are well-staged, the period sets are eye candy, basically from a technical perspective it is absolutely fine. But the characters and songs struggled and ultimately failed to hold my attention. I give it a C.

To be fair, no demo other than Black 25+ women is showing...it could use any demo strength outside of that group...
Well, it’s gonna get two 50-something white folks and an 80 something year old MIL in about an hour…

Godzilla -1 probably has $5-6m left in the DOM tank, just enough to push -1 ahead of Shin Godzilla's $78 WW!
Nice! I thought -1 was a million times better than Shin.
Good to see the early estimates of it dropping Monday vs. Sunday were wrong. They looked off to me from the start.Monday would push it to $74.8m WW per mojo, pending international updates. Might creep past Shin before the weekend, though we may not know it officially.

I don't know what it's like in the US but the two week school break here in Canada starts this week and goes into next week obviously. So there should be very strong numbers for the next 14 days.
I think most did last week and this week, but there’s one I know of near me (Indiana) that’s doing this week and next week.

How much did it lose Thursday? Because its Thu gross is almost flat with last Thu’s. If it were to have slight 2nd weekend increases over both the 4 day weekends, 50 can happen.
FWIW in their weekend prediction article the numbers has screen estimates of 2,110 for -1 and 1,802 for Heron. Will likely lose more on Monday but for now that’s only down about 500 each.

It’s genuinely impressive just how badly this is going to perform coming off a film that made over a billion dollars worldwide.
I know there’s been other DC films that have further eroded interest, but you’d think a sequel to a generally well liked original would be able to at least open well. This is just outright rejection.
it’s been five years since Aquaman. I’d argue that’s even more of an issue than the recent DC flops. That kind of gap is almost always unbridgeable for sequels these days. -

Did they intentionally choose a photo in which it looks like he's bursting into song lmao
Now that you mention it, this should totally be a musical! -

Thats a 41% drop from last Friday. The first "normal" drop so to speak, still its a little bummer, ive hoped for 1,5M+
That beeind said, the movie will cross a x3 multiplier this weekend, so really, theres nothing to complain.
Friday number also takes it over 60 WW.

-1 starting to show signs of normal drops. Hopefully the holidays helps it a bit. 40m+ easily happening still.
Yeah, 40 is a lock imo, and I’m pretty confident of 50. 60-75 would be nice but I’m not counting on it. -
Up now. 955k, -20%

How often does mojo and The Numbers update international totals? Seems like -1 hasn’t been updated on The Numbers in weeks, and mojo is a bit behind as well. I thought I noticed mojo updates on Wednesdays at some point? -1 I believe should be around 30m internationally. I just like to see updated numbers lol
6.6 for -1 this weekend would be crazy good.
I don’t think this is numbers or mojo, just Toho not reporting international totals. I don’t think it’s deliberate, like they’re trying to hide something, just a reflection of the (generously) half-baked global rollout they did after the movie blew up in the U.S. They did have releases scheduled for the UK and Brazil for the 15th as part of the initial plan, so hopefully we will get some updates early next week. -
$1.46m Tuesday for Heron.

Interesting note: the plane that figured in the film’s climax was based on an actual Japanese fighter prototype that first flew three days before the bombing of Hiroshima.
