I noticed double standards about CGI. Prison break scene in Venom 2 or that infamous CGI fight in Black Panther look even worse than bad CGI monsters here, some of the worst CGI of a decade, but for whatever reason people ignore that in those 100-200 mln budget comic book movies with high profile people behind them where it should be just unacceptable, but in 5-6 times cheaper film without any star team they suddenly destroy the entire movie based on a couple of bad CG shots in a trailer and complain only about that. C'mon, people, be consistent. It can't be acceptable in a much much more expensive movie with Oscar nominated team, but suddenly very very bad in a small-mid budget horror movie without any prestige behind it.
Even if it looked expensive, they'd still complain about it, they are never happy about anything.
The cgi in those movies isn’t great either but at least they don’t like webisodes. The sets and lighting are fine but in this?

Saw this at TIFF and wasn't a big fan but I get why people love it. It was well made with some great performances and ideas but I felt nothing overall. The shock value body horror numbed me by the end and the emotional moments fell completely flat. Haven't seen Raw so can't compare but I am curious to see it as I do think the director is talented.

looks better than the mila whatsherface movies
At least those looked like actual movies though regardless of how bad an adaptation they were.

If you told me that was a YouTube fan film, I’d believe it. That looks awful and extremely cheap. It looks worse than the older RE films, but it’s more accurate to the games now so big woop.

Watched Venom 1 for the first time yesterday then went to see 2. Kinda confused at the harsh reception to the first, it wasn’t great or anything but it wasn’t significantly better or worse than your average comic book film either. It was fine.
Venom 2 was a lot of fun though, knew exactly what it was and didn’t try and pretend to be otherwise. Just goofy schlocky fun, and it was refreshing to see one of these films play it straight and be sincere. I just wish it was a bit longer because I would’ve loved more Woody and to flesh out some other aspects.

Well yes. Same for James Bond. I dont see The problem
It's not a problem necessarily, I just don't normally expect it in these films. But it suddenly made sense why the car got prominent placement on the poster once I saw the movie.

Apparently this commercial was directed by the Russo Brothers themselves
So we should expect another blatant car commercial scene in the film ala the BMW in Shang Chi?

seeing this tomorrow and since i finished my bond marathon on friday i watched the 60s Casino Royale to tide me over. hahahahaha legit contender for the worst film i've ever seen what the fuck.
It's a complete mess and quite bad but I can't help but enjoy the chaos and maximalist 60s style of it all ha. The only thing it has going for it is truly stunning sets and production design, movie looks insane visually.

I searched up "John Mctiernan movie jail" on google to find out why he hasn't made a movie in 20 years and found out he went to actual jail lmao. Read up on the shit he pulled and what a way to ruin an amazing career.
He does have a new one in development finally.

Finished my Clint Marathon:
Hereafter - 8/10
J. Edgar - 5/10
Jersey Boys - 5/10
American Sniper - 7/10
Sully - 8/10
The 15:17 to Paris - 4/10
The Mule - 9/10
Richard Jewell - 8/10
Cry Macho - 8/10 - One of the most beautiful films of the year and hit way harder now that I can view it as the next piece of an evolving filmography where he's been tackling similar ideas and themes for decades now.
More in depth thoughts and ranking here:
September:
Shang Chi - 6/10 - Comes close to top tier marvel but held back by flat, ugly visuals and a dull third act that doesn't embrace the fantasy elements as much as it should. Tony Leung's scenes and the flashbacks are the best parts of the film and emotionally sincere but the rest is more of the same.
Stillwater - 8/10
Malignant - 9/10
Titane - 6/10 - I can understand the appeal but I got numbed and bored by the gross out body horror shock of it all halfway through. The "sweet" emotional stuff also didn't hit me in the slightest, felt nothing.
Cherry - 3/10 - Confirmed all my worst suspicions about the Russos.
Card Counter - 8/10
One Second - 8/10 - Zhang Yimou is a new discovery for me and this alongside his two most recent film have been great. This one was unfortunately censored by the Chinese government but the film is still beautiful and works really well even if what got dulled down is a bit obvious in some scenes.
Shutter Island - 8/10
Annette - 4/10 - I could stomach a long musical, I cannot stomach a long sung through musical, especially when most of the songs are really bad.
The Matrix - 10/10
Shiva Baby - 8/10
Matrix Reloaded - 9/10
Office Space - 7/10
Red Rock West - 8/10 - Incredibly underrated Nic Cage film.
Matrix Revolutions - 7/10
The Right Stuff - 10/10 - One of the last American epics, they really don't make them like this anymore.
Casino Royale - 10/10
Quantum of Solace - 7/10
The Long Goodbye - 9/10

Critics are growing so tired of stale formulaic comic book films that they're now being Venom-pilled lmao

Top 5:
- The Spy Who Loved Me
- Casino Royale
- From Russia With Love
- Goldfinger
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Living Daylights, Moonraker, License to Kill and Goldeneye as runner ups.
Bottom 5:
- Never Say Never Again
- Die Another Day
- Casino Royale (1967)
- Diamonds are Forever
- The World is Not Enough
A View to a Kill and You Only Live Twice would be there if you remove the two unofficial entries.

Some of the negative reviews are pointing towards things I've been concerned about but hopefully they don't bother me. This has been my most anticipated film of the last two years now. I do hope we go more late Connery/Moore next time though, I miss the fun camp. The talk of this being divisive amongst fans has made me very interested.

If Cavill slimmed down, maybe. He's way too bulked up to be Bond.
-
Rewatched the sequels for the first time in over a decade and I think they've aged pretty well. Reloaded kinda rules and while Revolutions is a bit of a mess, it's still decent and sticks the landing.

decided to include never say never again in my bond marathon i'd never seen it before and this is a top tier bond movie. good villains, clear underwater action, roger moore isn't there. it's got everything. except the music is substantially worse than the mainline films that's the one big knock.
NSNA praise? Now that is something you don't hear everyday. I can't stand it for the most part but the femme fatale is pretty great and switching up the usual poker game with the villain into an arcade game is fun.

very weak numbers. you can tell most of his fanbase died since MDB
“Since MDB”, Gran Torino and The Mule both did really well. Older audiences haven’t been returning to theatres since the pandemic.

Funny that the 2 openers (Cop Shop and Cry Macho) skewed heavily old and Caucasian - now we know how few in those ranges will show up for a non-blockbuster adult-skewing movie...
That demographic is also just not going to theatres yet during the pandemic.

In Ontario, Bond opens after the vaccine passport requirements start. The theatres are selling tickets at full capacity now.
Edit: The second largest chain, Landmark is doing that. Cineplex seems to be continuing with seating limits.

Really curious how this will do critically and commercially in France. They love him over there.

Finished my Bond rewatch ahead of NTTD which I'm seeing tomorrow night. I went through all of them to Brosnan last summer then saved Craig for closer to release. Bond is by and far my fav franchise and it was fun to go through some of these for the first time in years.
