Pretty crazy that Lake Changjin continues to be the frontrunner this far into it. Can you explain the phenomenon a little bit? Also, considering that Dune holding as well as it is, wouldn't it pretty easily hit above $40 million total unless it falls of a cliff next weekend?

The thing is that GvK had good legs everywhere and made about 38% of its WW total from China. Dune looks to have no legs in China unfortunately. I think you're overshooting a tad, but we'll see. My guess is around 340-360 million WW.

Damn didn't top 8 million in the UK. Yeah, not great but not bad. Will be interesting to see HBO numbers when the dust settles.

Just watched it again from the comfort of my own home without any distractions. Must say, it was way better on the second viewing. While it was far less of an experience, it actually made it easier to highlight the quality of the film. Everything made more sense and flowed better because I was noticing a lot more of the small things that indicated what was going on. The film is also much smarter than I gave it credit for, Damn I'm glad that removing the experience of the theater, although amazing, didn't diminish the movie and that the story was far better on the second viewing. I'll bump my rating up to a 8/10. Nice.

I'll just post my review from the other thread: It's a hard film to unpack. Personally I felt like they kept too many plotlines from the book, which prevented some of them from being given air to breathe. I also understand now how there's been opposing views on the pacing. First half is mostly exposition with many events happening in quick succession, while in the second half the scenes grow significantly longer and focus much more on the characters. Watching it, especially the first half, I felt it was somewhat disjointed. Probably lots and lots of scenes on the cutting room floor, which is a shame because there was a real hint of greatness there and the actors did a great job when they had something to work with. However that did not prevent me from getting emotionally attached to the characters, and I disagree with a few critics who thought the movie was lacking emotional depth. It's dripping with it feeling. The movie has a very ethereal vibe and I really dig that, and a few scenes, that I wont spoil, really hit home emotionally for me. Obviously, the visuals were phenomenal. There were a few times I got goosebumps and I think I even audibly went "wow" as well. I don't think I've ever done that before, it was beautiful. The overall presentation of the movie was very creative as well, it's definitely different. I was worried about the score, but I enjoyed most of it, with one of two exceptions when the exaggerated wailing got borderline cringe. Same with a few short scenes that I felt could have been left out. By the end, I felt like they did manage to make the film feel cohesive and I really liked were it ended as well. I went with a friend of mine and she knew nothing of Dune, nor sci-fi really, and she liked it a lot. I've had some scenes lingering in my mind that I can't wait to revisit and I kinda want to see the movie again already as I think I'll enjoy it even more on a second viewing. All in all I would rate it a 7,5/10. I still loved most of it and want to see it again. TLDR: Ethereal and beautiful movie with a strong visceral soundtrack and powerful emotional scenes, that feels somewhat disjointed and tries to balance perhaps too many plotlines.

I agree that any movie should be able to stand on its own, but this is one of the few times were the PLF hype is legit. I watched Shang-Chi in IMAX as well and that did nothing for me, but this? It's not that I don't think you can watch it and get something out of it on a regular screen, it's that watching this movie is an experience. It's legitimately one of the most immersive and amazing audiovisual theater experiences I've ever had. It's clear it was made for the big screen format. I only watched it in IMAX though so don't have anything to compare it to. Either way, have a good time and let us know what you think!

Yeah that makes more sense, but don't think that NTTD is relevant here. It's already in the top 10 list of highest grossing films ever in the UK. $7,9 is the OW for BR2049 according to both Box Office Mojo and The Numbers so think it's accurate. I think it's very likely that Dune will match or surpass that number and considering that BR2049 did well at the UK box office, and as I said that Venom 2, Shang Chi and F9 did between 8-9 million in their respective OW's, I wouldn't call that disappointing. We will see where Dune ends up soon though.

Yeah I think I'm confused about something. The deadline article said that: "In the UK, the Dune cume through Thursday is $1.5M which includes Monday previews. Opening day Thursday came in just 6% below No Time to Die on the same day in the market. Imax has 50 screens playing Dune which were good for 21% of the opening Thursday, versus 8% for No Time to Die and 9% for Shang-Chi." https://deadline.com/2021/10/dune-china-uk-korea-opening-international-box-office-1234860686/ However that doesn't really add up. Don't know if they are comparing Monday (didn't know Monday had previews) + Thursday for Dune to NTTD, or what. However, NTTD had a pretty staggering OW in the UK making about $35 million. Dune wont make close to that, but is being predicted by some to have a ~$10 million OW there. Which would still be good. Blade Runner 2049 made $7,9 million in its OW in the UK and went on to make ~$25 million in its entire run there. I do think it's pretty certain that Dune will have a better OW than Blade Runner 2049 there, and will be on par with pretty much every single big movie this year including Venom 2, Shang-Chi and BW (outside of NTTD). So wouldn't call that disappointing at all.

How's UK numbers disappointing? Isn't that preview pretty similar to NTTD?
