It's hard to say some hit movies have still advertised during the Super Bowl but someone will argue they would have been hits anyway. Can a Super Bowl ad still put something that's not already a big franchise or well known property on the map?

At some point prior to 2010 maybe. But it's been long enough that the tactic has failed that it should be abandoned.

The reason SXSW reviews are better is because seeing a good film at a festival is always going to help bump up the aftertaste than seeing a good film in a normal theater because, after it's over, you're still at a festival rather than thinking about the film as you drive home.

I hope this doesn't sound trollish. But I don't get this. Is this saying the movie will somehow get better scores if it's shown at a festival? Or that reviews at a festival are more "valid" than others? I'm really confused.

I remember the Fury Road enthusiasm. It was a giddy, euphoric, overwhelming enthusiasm. Never ever got that sense for Fall Guy. Fall Guy felt more like it's better than expected. Heard Tropic Thunder and Nice Guys comps but said comparisons mentioned it wasn't as good either but still very enjoyable.

...That actually sounds like a realistic assessment of the film if we're going by its IMDB or Metacritic scores. But people really should have described it as something other than "SXSW raves" if it wasn't actually raves.

The Fall Guy is still Certified Fresh at 83 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and got an A- CinemaScore, which is far better than those metrics for The Flash. Universal moved the release date from the first weekend in March to the summer box office kick off slot: they really thought they had something.

The Super Bowl ad and leaning into Barbenheimer makes more sense with a March 1 release date—that was before this year's Oscars ceremony (March 10). Ryan and Emily were both nominated, so if they had been heavily promoting The Fall Guy in late February, of course talk about the movies they wete nominated for would naturally come up. But they moved it to May, so a Super Bowl ad can seem like a waste in a fast-moving world, and Barbenheimer was old news.

Super Bowl ads don't really make sense for ANY movie though. Flash super bombed and lost more money than Fall Guy ever will with a much buzzier Super Bowl trailer.

  5. Its Metacritic is 73. Lots of movies have a "good not great" score on Metacritic like that. People on here talked it up like it had Fury Road level raves, so SXSW must have had a very different reaction that the critics who watched it elsewhere.

Note that its audience score is 75. This is also "good not great" range generally (especially since this movie most likely isn't getting review bombed. Compare this to the audience score for the Mario movie:

Maybe I miscalculated what the "raves" were but I don't get the sense paying audiences treated this film as some kind of Barbenheimer level thingy.

I don’t think it was an astroturf, just SXSW hyping/overhyping a film as usual. Whatever hype there was very obviously couldn’t be maintained all the way to May.

Nah, it totally felt like an astroturf. I had seen zero real world response to the "hype" and it mainly seemed to be something referenced on box office boards. I had never heard actual realspace humans say "Wow I hear that Fall Guy movie is really something!" It certainly wasn't the equivalent of "Joker wins Golden Lion".

Here's a wild pitch. Not sure the WB studio heads would go for it, though. It's very risky.

A 4th Batman movie starting Christian Bale with Christopher Nolan directing. #mindblown

Or...now stay with me...a legacy sequel to the Harry Potter series starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Can you imagine what some random people on an internet board might think?

...I'm skeptical Radcliffe and Watson want to work on projects written by Rowling for reasons that are painfully obvious.

  8. I can't help but laugh about all the "superhero fatigue" "superheroes are dead" stuff given how badly a non-superhero summer opener has done. Whatever it is that's supposed to save cinema "action movie with romance and Taylor Swift score" ain't it.

Also seems pretty clear the "rave reviews from advance screenings" was likely an astroturf, albeit less sketchy than the Flash one.

Am I the only one who thinks Twisters is still a huge wildcard? If its a bad tornado season in the US, the film won't be able to market as well as if it's a calm season.

It's....not gonna be that marketable anyway IMO because it's a remake of something already done with an older, better cast, but yeah, deadly tornadoes do not qualify as escapism anymore.

  10. I mean, I like the fact that it DOESN'T look like the "default 2020s" cinematographic filter. Hopefully they don't go the "REAL IS BROWN" or "everything should have zero lighting" trends. To me, this does not look like a super high concept film. Certainly more accesible than something like Poor Things or a lot of A24 films.

Also if we're going by the "advance reviews/screenings mean its gonna bomb!" metric.....hoo boy, is that a stupid and innacurate way to measure a film's potential impact.

If there's some teenage tiktok on "bring your IF stuffy and watch in your PJs" and it goes wild...I don't know about it.  It's no crazier than a dancing horror doll craze.

I mean, Regal gave away tickets on the 1st day of presales to its subscribers with its point return plan...and the movie gave away 1-for-1 tickets if you bought the 1st day, so IF has pushed some ticket buying early. Maybe it gets out there...maybe...

Considering I haven't heard any reports of If becoming a meme movie in any way, I'll take "no" over "flying pandas fart out peppermint bubbles and If becomes the next Gentleminions" for my theory on this one.
