how is that compared to other mcu movies?

Just behind Endgame. It has already obliterated the others. The 2nd biggest was (now it is 3rd) Infinity War with €20.5m. Endgame is at €29.2m. The biggest SH film ever is Joker with €30.5m.

MCU in Spain (it is in Spanish but I think it is understandable)

But Spain single movie admissions far increase,in 60s ,the movie attracted 2m admissions can called the blockbuster, biggest admissions in Spain is Ben-Hur,James Bond Dr.No which have over 4-5m admissions, for now Biggest admissions in Spain is Titanic over 10m admissions.

Well, there were not exactly blockbusters at 60s. Ben-Hur was the Titanic of 50s with 11 Oscars, and James Bond is probably the first franchise ever and the only one during 60s. At least, the first global phenomenon. I do not find so crazy those results. People here could go to cinemas all the afternoon-evening seeing 2 or even 3 films in a row with a single ticket. People devoured every film shown. Tons of films sold 1 or 2 million admissions in those years by this system, although a bunch of them as you say reached higher amounts, but not just Ben-Hur or Dr. No.

There are more films in the 4-5 million or even 6 million during 60s and early 70s: Mary Poppins (4.98 million), The godfather (5 million), For a few dollars more (5.5 million), The graduate (5.3 million) or The little priest (6.5 million), and there are at least 3 local films over 4 million, with Jungle Book bordering 4 million (3.8 million).

And the political situation in Spain did not help either. For instance, Doctor Zhivago was banned until Franco's death because political context. When it was released it sold 7.2 million admissions. Gone with the Wind was just released in 2 theaters during the original release, one in Madrid and another one in Barcelona. Just with those 2 theaters, it sold 1 million admissions... in just 2 theaters. After that it has been probably released in more cities and theaters and it sold more admissions, but at the beginning the releases were very conditioned by censorship. Spanish market was not exactly normal along the dictatorship (1939-1975).

Just to notice that Titanic is at 11.26 million after 2012 re-release.

The numbers of Italy are simply incredible, it's sad that now even Skyfall didn't manage to reach 2 million admissions

And it isn't just a problem of the actor who plays Bond, I think that among the 5 main EU countries we are the one with the biggest decline over the various decades...

Same applies here. Just for reference, Spain was selling well over 300 million admissions in late 60s (376 million admissions in 1968, first year I have found data) with about 33 million inhabitants. Today, with 47 million people, a normal year is bordering just 100 million.

If we count Soviet Union, then everything changed,so that's not count that.

China have same problem, admission number in 80s is super boomed,A movie called "地道战“ attracted more than 2B people watch it,the biggest admissions number in the movie history and more than 4 Titanic's admissions combined, and many foreign film also had a huge admissions number in China, the Yugoslavia film called "the bridge" have over 500m admissions in China,Rambo  have over 80m admissions and the first Superman movie also have huge 80m admissions in China.

but that's meaningless, for example ,it's just like Despacito have over 5B views on Youtube but doesn't mean there are real 5B people have watched this video.

Well, here we are talking about European Union+UK, so USSR or China do not count. In fact the numbers which I gave do not include countries like Norway or Switzerland, since both are not in the EU. Anyway, there is another thread about WW admissions.

Wonderful job 👍🏼, and yeah Lumiere unfortunately only has data from 1996 to 2019 (or 2020, I don't remember). And I recommend stopping at the 50th position because after that the list starts to get quite long and probably requires too much work

Ok, I will post more movies later. I have remembered The Da Vinci Code, Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis or The Sixth Sense as huge grossers in Europe.

In order to have the most info possible I will hide from the 51th spot

Nice, thank you ! Didn't realize that our French film "The Intouchables" was so huge in all Europe

@MG10, I know that it will take you a lot of time but is it possible to make the same ranking but with admissions, because it will allow us to have a better idea of the performance of these huge films in European markets

If I am not wrong @charlie Jatinder has a thread about WW admissions for the biggest films. I guess he has those data.

And there are some links for this kind of info in this old thread: Adjusting Exchange Rates... We abandoned it a long time ago but the sources we posted there should have that info

  8. Thank you very much for your work, but since you make some comments about exchange rates for Avatar and IA4 (DH2 was really benefited too), I miss similar comments for other films with the opposite problem, like those released in 2001-2002. Both HP1 (I guess you are looking for data for it since it was a bigger monster than many films in the list and I know there are not many data about it in BOM) and FOTR were really damaged because extremely bad exchange rates (dollar bigger than euro during 2001-2002), being both films the most attended in many European countries among those franchises.

It is hard to compare films since admissions data are not available for many countries. Unadjusted dollar by inflation or ERs is ok, but generates this kind of problems. Anyway, and again, thanks for your initiative :)

The answer is simple - none. US audiences despise subtitles for whatever reason. So you would need a movie in English, starring a well known actor like Jackie Chan with maybe an American actor alongside and add in some comedy and some action. Basically what I'm saying is make Rush Hour 4.

Just a question: every film is released in original version in USA/Canada at theaters? In that case, I regret what I said at the beginning about those massive releases in USA. It is hard to sell something massively in a different language than yours, even if it is subtitled.

In Spain, EVERY FILM is dubbed and just a bunch of showtimes are shown in original version. Sadly, very few people want to see here movies with original voices. Many people say: "I love that actor or actress". But the fact is that they have never heard their real voices...

@peludo, What if Wolf Warrior 2 &800 get release in USA by Disney in 4000+ theatres? I think CFA will overturn the ban if some $50M-$100M are coming from US. However, a Chinese Distributor doesn't seem to be interested in wide release. They just try to attract Chinese Diaspora, &I hate that release strategy.

(Just Curious) I want to know What Chinese Film (according to you) can attract a lot of crowds from US?

I do not know if a lot of crowds, but films like The Wandering Earth could have a chance with a more or less wide release. Of course, TWE is really far from being a masterpiece, but I have seen worse sci-fi films coming from USA being released in 300 or 400 theaters in Spain (equivalent to 3,000-4,000 theaters DOM) making mediocre amounts. Of course, I am conscious that USA and their stars are a way better reclaim for a film than unknown Chinese actors.

Or maybe Hi, mom. It only has 4 critics in RT, but the 4 are fresh, including from Variety. Maybe if they had tried not a wide but an average release they could have surprised... I do not know, just theories...

I just try to understand why they release that and not NWH

There can be n reasons which have already been debated here:

Maybe China does not want nothing coming from Western countries that can beat their products? I do not see any Chinese film being released in +4,000 theaters in USA either and nobody complains about that. To release a Woody Allen film, which btw is a quite good film, is not a menace to the local BO. At the end, China is fighting with USA to be the biggest economy in the world.

On the other hand and asuming that it is obvious that in China there is demand about Marvel products, sometimes I think here people forget that China is an authoritarian regime. Censorship is not new. Maybe from now everything that comes from Marvel will be banned because they signed Chloé Zhao for Eternals. Who knows?

The fact is that it seems highly unlikely it can be released. At very least not in optimal conditions to make the money what would have been expected.

Nice thank you for your answer

In France, it can still reach €55m at the end of his run more than double that of Spain, let's see how it goes ...

In terms of market sizes it is a normal gap. In 2019, last normal year, Spain total market was about €625m, and France grossed €1.3b. NWH results in Spain and France fit with the market size from both countries.

I said Connery's Bond is biggest franchise because when I check many countries 60s yealy rank,Connery's Bond is the only Bond which boomed everywhere, not only popular in Europea, but everywhere,in many markets Bond today not doing really well(like Asia),for example,From Russia with love break all-time box office record in HongKong,Singapore,South korea,Philippines,Brazil...etc,most of them are Asia and Latin America countries, but today's Bond is not big in Asia.Connery's Bond is something special. He is the reason why Bond 's name is famous worldwide, today's many countries,James Bond is not a popular franchise with young people, like Spain,China...But if you ask them:Do you know James Bond or 007?They will say:Of course I've heard of it,and that's mainly because of Sean Connery,by popularity Bond is kind of Marvel movie of 60s

    Fair enough ;)

Yeah my mistake was probably to rely too much on the comparison with Italy, where Titanic is first and the first Lion King in the top 30 (I was referring to the gross more than the admissions). But I forgot that Spain has actually continued to grow while the other is stable, if not in a sad decline  : (

At the end the gross is a way to measure a success in a certain moment, but to compare today grosses with 25-30 years ago's is not very useful if ticket price has nearly doubled in that period. For example, NWH is probably reaching here the top 20 in all time grosses, but it will probably rank between #70 and #80 among most attended.
