I think this movie remains most relevant as an early specimen of blockbuster filmmaking. The final half hour with the riots and floods is really intense (and I can't be the only one who detects a resemblance between the leads in this film and Jack and Rose in Titanic).

The rest, however, is a bizarre hodgepodge of class warfare and religious symbolism and the resolution would be considered laughably simplistic today, especially given the near 2.5 hour runtime. I imagine the Rotwang/Fredersen fight scene still missing may have helped to give that subplot more dramatic heft, but with the film as it is now it seems Rotwang just existed because the film needed an antagonist.
