a bergman masterpiece. though for bergman, masterpiece is a pretty unremarkable word.

 

war is one of the most illuminating film subjects, but only when great directors mix it with their own concerns, rather than letting veterans of the genre make stupid, jingoistic shit. in this case, the contrast between probing psychology and harsh survivalism is deeply disconcerting, and very powerful. the boat scene is one of the bleakest things ever put to screen.
