Creed (2015)

Not a fan of boxing movies and I’ve never seen any of the Rocky movies, but I decided to watch this now that I’ve seen Black Panther. I really liked it though, despite having no emotional connection to Rocky or characters like Apollo Creed, this movie had me tearing up a few times. And the fights were pretty intense. Great acting from everyone. Great music too. A

The only reboot that matches the original. Creed captures of the magic of Rocky, infusing it with a modernity that never feels trying. Michael B. Jordan is magnificent as Adonis, embodying the character in a way that makes a clear counterpart to Stallone’s stellar Rocky. A two-hander with two of the most charismatic actors from two generations, both playing broken men building a family out of each other. Thompson also impresses, making Bianca a memorable foil for Donnie, and a romance well worth rooting for.

 

Coogler’s direction impresses with groundbreaking fights and a true emotion to every scene shot. Göransson’s score leads an amazing soundtrack that culminates in some of the greatest montages ever put to cinema. Creed is magnificent, a masterpiece that knows just how to honor the legacy while making its way into its own majestic identity. A shining achievement for Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and sports movies in general. A+
