Rules Don't Apply is an absolute failure. Beatty's direction is stale and his Howard Hughes impersonation is worse, a bland caricature of a complicated man. However, the atrocities of these pale to his writing, which, at its best this go-around, resembles a lesser Woody Allen film and, at its worst, treats the audience like they're toddlers who have never heard of subtlety. Collins and Ehrenreich make the best of their material, and are by far the best parts of the film, but they can't make this be enjoyable. The rest of the impressive cast is wasted either forgettable bit roles or confusing cameos. Rules Don't Apply is redundant, doing absolutely nothing new or interesting with its setting or characters, and tremendously disappoints. Avoid it. D
