lilmac
Good article on the lack of copycats for what is now a billion dollar franchise. Namely, 50 Shades. https://www.the-numbers.com/news/228750830-Analysis-Why-Havent-There-Been-Fifty-Shades-of-Grey-Copycats On the outside that would seem an anomaly. Here’s insightful analysis on the ‘why’
SLAM!
I haven't read the article at this time. But I do have an idea on why there have not been any Fifty Shades copycats in the film industry yet, and probably will not ever be: 1) The 'popular book series' excuse. The book series was a massive success, so the sexual scenes in the films didn't take away from people's desire to see it. If a copycat attempted to display the same overt sexualization in a film that does not have the 'popular book' safeguard, it would be much easier to thumb it down for the general audience. Because I have the hope in other people that the majority of them did not cause the first film's massive success in order to satisfy their own personal lust. Not everyone in America who likes romantic filmmaking is interested in imagery that cuts it very close in regards to bring pornographic, and I trust that their disinterest in such content would prevent a rip-off from gaining such traction. 2) Filmmakers have higher standards. The Fifty Shades franchise is something with very little scope and very little artistic vision. It is very, very tough to imagine that filmmakers would want to undertake a film that shares Fifty Shades' specific 'subgenre' any time soon, because it's not something that actually merits it. Filmmakers don't want to stoop low and make things easy by doing what the Fifty Shades filmmakers did. And I'm sure producers are looking to make projects that are a little more grandiose and a little more respectable. 3) Audiences would automatically deem it a ripoff. Moviegoers aren't idiots. If a film or film series comes along and proves itself to be very similar to Fifty Shades, people will notice, and the negative stigma that's resulted in a decrease of the franchise's film profits over time will carry over. Barnack
Pretty much slambros, has expected the explanation is that about 99% of the film series perceived success is related to be an adaptation of a book series that sold like 150m books (even bigger than the twilight or hunger games type of success) and that hundreds of books did try to replicate it none did, making it useless to try to replicate it for that 1% not because of the book series business it is making.
