On Saturday, we had the equivalent of National Cinema Day here in Poland. In previous years it took place in mid-December, last year it was on the 30th of October. This time they decided to go with the 30th of September, and it was clearly meant to boost attendance on Polish movies which have been doing quite well recently. Tickets cost only 12 PLN, which is 2-3 times less than regular ticket prices on a weekend. Almost 250 theaters across the country participated, and this helped to amass almost one million viewers over the weekend.

 

A lot of movies went up or remained on the same level as last week. New titles opened to strong numbers. The controversial The Green Border went up in its second week (164 912 / +20% / 425 194). Teściowie 2 had a strong third weekend (97 801 / -1% / 429 351) and is now close to overtaking the first movie from 2021 (450k). The "traveling dog" movie mentioned by Issac had the best hold in the TOP10 (+177%). There was also a new Polish release, Doppelgänger, which opened with 58k admissions. Saw X had a great opening with almost 100k, and The Creator opened with almost 69k.

 

Expect big drops next week.

The official no. 1 movie of the weekend is again Green Border (85k/589k), however, the real winner is Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie which in its second weekend of previews had +120k admissions (and probably close to 180k overall). Previews are not reported until the opening weekend in Poland and in this case, we have also a UIP movie, so next Monday we will get a social media post from them claiming that the movie had the second-biggest or even biggest opening of the year or something like that. Folks at UIP always count together the 3-day OW with the previews, and call it "opening". :P

Chłopi aka The Peasants should stay strong in the coming weeks with its good reviews and also due to the fact that this is an adaptation of a classic, Nobel Prize-winning novel and the Polish Oscar contender for best international feature. Schools will support this movie and I wouldn't be surprised if it reaches eventually 1M admissions.

 

Paw Patrol: The Mighy Movie is doing, as expected, extremely well. Without previews, its 3-day opening weekend must have been close to 350k which is the 2nd biggest opening weekend of 2023. The first movie opened with 347k including previews (estimated 3-day around 190k) and ended up with around 1,2M (estimation). This one should do even better.

 

There's also the Taylor Swift The Eras Tour concert movie which did OK with around 22k, although the number won't be officially reported so it is also an estimation. Taylor seems not to be that popular in Poland, however, I believe that she's already sold out three concerts in Warsaw next August (3 x 55-60k).

 

Past Lives opened with 10k but has already over 29k admissions including previews.
