Spirited Away

Hard to say if it beats Princess Mononoke.

It's not my favorite Ghibli movie (Kiki), and I have to rewatch Kaguya to see if it's even number 2, but it does sit squarely at number three.

A masterpiece. One of my favorite films ever, not only animated. Probably in my top 10 or top 15. Pure magic.

You know, now that I have seen Kiki's Delivery Service, I see that Chihiro is a unique character for Hayao Miyazaki.

 

Before, he focused on motivated, lively, and mostly cheerful protagonists. Chihiro is a mopey brat. I wouldn't even say she's not a brat by the end of the movie. She's just a bit wiser, I suppose.

 

This isn't a flaw of the movie, of course. But it does maybe show Miyazaki's evolution as a storyteller and a filmmaker.
