The Tom Waits 1979 interview Heath Ledger got his inspiration for the joker from

If I'm not mistaken, that was on Australian TV. Would not be surprised at all if Ledger saw it at some point as a kid. He was too young to watch it in 1979, but maybe it was aired later on and he got a chance to see it. The mannerisms and even the voice are eerily similar. I also thought there was some Cagney in Ledger's performance too.

The voice and the cadence is eerily similar. It's like Ledger started off his sentences like Waits and then injected mild enthusiasm/mania by the end of his statement. "Let's wind the clocks back a year. These cops and lawyers wouldn't dare cross any of you..."Nice find, Tawasal.

Thanks and I love when actors find inspiration in others instead of been all too good for everyone and it does reflect in their perfomance too.

Yeah they both kinda confirm that by makin' jokes about it. And it is also in the title.
