admissions managed to increase despite an incredibly weak Hollywood line-up, which local films had to make up for. I expect 2015 to see a much bigger increase than 2014(FF7, Minions and IO all made much more than any Hollywood film from last year).

After a week without numbers, boxoffice.com is back so here are all the grosses I could find for the weekend of September 17-20:

Film Weekend Gross Total gross drop weeks in release
Maze Runner 2 272,909 272,909   1
The Visit 45,219 149,833   2
Vacation 42,589 1,301,846   7
Ricki And The Flash 31,984 116,834 -65% 2
Minions 27,165 5,446,256   12
Inside Out 25,276 4,845,400   14
MI 5 23,700 2,312,135   8
Hitman 19,201 595,056   5
Compton 17,683 132,447   3
Trainwreck 6,510 735,614   9
Pixels 1,986 804,480   9

Maze Runner had a decent opening but it's hard to know where it will end because next week is a holiday so it should have a very high multiplier.

Thenumbers is back for the weekend of October 8-11:

Film Weekend Gross Total gross drop weeks in release
The Martian 229,866 593,883   2
The Intern 150,979 443,459   2
Everest 119,490 1,021,364 -47% 3
Hotel Transylvania 2 100,966 1,403,038 -68% 3
The Walk 76,365 76,365   1
Maze Runner 2 61,701 1,011,219   4
Pan 55,760 55,760   1
The Visit 15,645 275,577 -47% 5
Vacation 8,598 1,391,416   10
Minions 8,279 5,555,269   15
Ricki And The Flash 1,034 160,351   5

The two new openers flopped just like Domestically but with reversed results with the Walk doing a little better than Pan. The Martian seems pretty decent, but nowhere near Gravity maybe 1.4M finish. solid for the Intern considering its scale, should pass a million. Everest is massively more successful than Domestic, could pass 1.5M. HT2 has already passed the first one, and still has plenty left, should just pass 2 million. Maze Runner went in the other direction and will drop from the first film.

Hello! What about Inside Out in your country?

It did very well, the biggest Pixar release on record (probably ever).

Pixar releases in Israel (since 2004 but missing the first Cars):

  1. Inside Out: 4.85M

  2. Toy Story 3: 4.42M

  3. Up: 3.6M

  4. Ratatouille: 3.08M

  5. The Incredibles: 2.18M

  6. Monsters University: 2.17M

  7. Wall-E: 1.91M

  8. Brave: 1.74M

  9. Cars 2: 1.54M

In fact it would have been the biggest Animation ever if not for The Minions which released almost at same time and made 5.55M (so far).

It's really satisfying :) Let's hope The Good Dinosaur can replicate this success :)

Extremely unlikely, Summer is by far the best time for animated films, winter releases don't get to the highs that summer releases do. the Problem is that in Israel there no Christmas and new years holidays. there is Hanukkah, but that is just a week, Summer is 2 months and a bit.

Thenumbers numbers for the weekend of October 15-18:

Film Weekend Gross Total gross drop weeks in release
The Martian 214,772 977,491 -7% 3
The Intern 167,778 657,988 11% 3
Everest 105,665 1,167,186 -12% 4
Hotel Transylvania 2 83,038 1,498,989 -18% 4
Pan 45,514 272,581 -18% 2
Goosebumps 43,961 43,961   1
The Walk 40,221 385,341 -47% 2
Maze Runner 2 35,752 1,123,320 -42% 5
The Visit 13,877 293,709 -11% 6
Minions 5,835 5,570,204 -30% 16
Ricki And The Flash 153 164,404 -85% 6

Goosebumps flops, but other then that there are a bunch of great drops, or, in the case of the The Intern, an increase. The totals for The Walk and Pan don't make sense considering last weeks numbers, I hope it gets clarified somehow later.

How is Star Wars in Israël?

Not good, AOTC and ROTS made about 800K, which if you look at the chart above, is nothing, and gets beaten by films all the time. ROTS made less than random stuff that most people haven't heard of like Space Chimps or Arbitrage. I don't expect anything huge from Star Wars in Israel.

Weird, as the biggest high tech pole outside the US I thought Israelis would be more into sci-fi and STar Wars or geeky things.

High Tech is indeed big in Israel, but American style geek culture is not. This is true not just for sci-fi, but also for Comic book films that are always relatively weaker compared the US. In fact this is true also with gaming culture, which is very small in Israel (and most people that play any video games seem to just play Fifa). I know some people who work in high tech, and they don't seem much more into geeky stuff than most people.

What Israelis do go for is Animated films (Israelis have far more children than Europeans or Americans), comedies (Ted, Ted 2, Hangover 2 and We're the Millers each made more than any superhero film has ever made), and more "traditional action" like Fast and Furious or James Bond.

Then again, I'm an Israeli that is interested in geeky things and sci-fi, but I'm still not interested in Star Wars, I just find those films incredibly overrated, most sci-fi films I have seen were better than Star Wars. I will probably see this one eventually, since I see so many films, but I won't see it in theatres..

I see..Israelis seem to be very serious people, not really into dreams and creativity.

I guess it was to be expected when you're surrounded by threatening neighbors in a dangerous region, you need to be down to Earth and realistic. I see it that way but maybe you'll disagree.

weekend of October 22-25:

Film Weekend Gross Total gross drop weeks in release
The Martian 184,673 1,225,307 -14% 4
The Intern 160,989 877,056 -4% 4
Hotel Transylvania 2 106,213 1,620,874 28% 5
Black Mass 94,758 94,758   1
Everest 75,551 1,275,299 -29% 5

Goosebumps 41,760 91,305 -5% 2
Maze Runner 2 29,491 1,225,564 -18% 6
Crimson Peak 21,501 21,501   1
The Walk 14,764 406,420 -63% 3

From the new openers Crimson Peak flopped (although horror films usually do) and Black Mass opened acceptably but was still unimpressive for what it is.

Everything had good holds, particularly HT2, which increased 28% and has only dropped 11% in total since opening 5 weeks ago and already has a 13.6 multiplier with plenty left to go (admittedly this was helped by a holiday).

Next week we get the new Paranormal Activity which shouldn't make very much.
