  1. I am a huge MCU fan. I have seen every MCU movie opening previews/midnights when those existed. However, the social media embargo is alarming. I honestly can see this making less than The Flash and being the lowest MCU film, Domestic at least. All signs are pointing to this bombing. At least, they didn't hype it up and put up a massive marketing campaign like The Flash. Seems like they are cutting their losses.

Walt was a businessman as much as he was a creative. It's a bit silly to suggest that he went into making movies for fun.

Sure, but Walt Disney was also one of the greatest creative geniuses of all-time from his films to the idea of bringing his creations to life by creating Disneyland. Only a handful of people alive today have the genius Walt had.

It’s not just one studio, pretty sure they’re all diving into that. I heard similar things thru a member of my guild (through his chats with studio execs he’s worked with before). It’s not that they expect AI to be “good enough” (yet), but their plan is to use it to generate a draft that they can then pay a single writer to rewrite (less fees to the writer, and way less writers employed overall).

I see where they're coming from, but AI has zero imagination. All they will get is boiler plate scripts, and that may work for say children's television, but you aren't going to get anything remotely creative.

  4. So take this for what you will, but I talked to a studio insider, and they very much believe AI will be able to write screenplays, and they have no need for writers. Now this is bullshit because AI lacks creativity, but the insider felt otherwise. I feel this is the thinking of many studio heads. Until studio heads realize ChatGPT can't write good screenplays, the WGA strike at least has no end in sight. Also, the insider told me they are calling it Machine Learing now because of the connotation calling it AI has. I mean, most people know machine learning and AI are the same, but whatever.

At they very least this particular studio believes AI can do more than it actually can. Anyway, I won't say names, but I can tell you the studio isn't Netflix.

Even if box office poison is hyperbolic, nobody ever expected this film to open to even half of what it's going to do as a result of the leads, which is part of why this soon-to-be runaway hit is so surprising

This. Even $40M would have been good and probably what WB thought would be the best case scenario. Even their lowball $75m prediction would be an amazing open.

  6. This storyline should have been an actual Avengers movie like the comic. This show is just outright boring. They should have scraped it when the scripts started coming in, but I guess at the time, they had to meet the Disney+ quota. Well, hopefully, they really do cut down on the shows and focus on 1-2 quality shows per year and maybe 1-2 one-shots

  7. This is a truly bold marketing campaign, and I love it, especially if this truly is Miyazaki's last film. It probably is because of his age. Has there ever been a film by a big name director where all they give is a title and the directors name? Anyone know how this is tracking in Japan, and if the numbers are good or bad?

  8. What happened this weekend? The Flash number is outright bad. Elemental is bad but Chapek fucked over Pixar and now the brand has some value lost, so I get its gross. But, damn, The Flash had Keaton Batman and could only muster $55M OW. Shit. I will say this, the multiverse really sucked here vs. what was done in Loki, NWH, and the Spider-Verse films. If you're going to do the multiverse, at least do it right. I guess DC being rebooted also plays a role here.

    Are you kidding me?

They fired their CEO, slashed 7,000 jobs, taking content off of their streaming service to save money.  Stock has fallen dramatically. Have had movie after movie fall short of break even and they have 2 huge budget films about to be released that are both looking like huge flops.
Found themselves in the middle of a cultural battle that has been the nail in the coffin of many families to finally close the door to Disney films and television.
Somehow the parks are a separate entity in most peoples minds and have remained somewhat unscathed but that is changing as well.
    That is MASSIVE TROUBLE!!

Doesnt mean they can’t right the ship but that would require changes I don’t think they can make.
At the very least they have to slash budgets across all sectors to account for a loss of fans to market to.  That would be a start.

Cultural Battle??? You mean standing up for LGBTQ and trans rights. Well, excuse me if you think that's a nail in the coffin for Disney. Now, that I got that off my chest, there was a study that found 71% of Americans and 89% ages 18-29 support LGBTQ rights. Supporting trans people and gay people is not some far ultra left agenda. And maybe they've lost some supporters, but it's like coming out against racism in the 60s and losing money from racists. At some point, you have to take a stand, and it's better to be on the right side of history.
