It will also exceed the ¥11 billion milestone and 8.5 million admissions on Sunday, making it only the second film to ever reach both marks after five weeks in release (Spirited Away being the first). >Sully debuts this weekend, and based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it's going to have a successful start of possibly ¥300 million or a little more. Eastwood is a very popular director in Japan (all his films are successful), and Hanks is also a respected actor and one of few Hollywood draws left. It's easy to predict a low avg. ticket price as it'll surely skew quite old, so that could prevent it from breaking ¥300 million; either way, it's looking good, and an opening on this level would guarantee at least ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), with a solid shot at ¥2 billion ($20 million). >The others openers, Sanada Ten Braves and Ushijima the Loan Shark 3 will have a minimal impact on the Top 10 as they're unlikely to make the Top 5.

It should earn around the 500 million mark, which (based on my estimates), will be enough to get it over the 10 billion milestone. If that happens, it'll have done so in just 28 days, making it the second fastest film to reach that milestone after Spirited Away (25 days). Also, it'll cement the film and director Makoto Shinkai in history as/with the only animated film by other than Miyazaki himself to ever reach the mark. And that's sure to cause even more exposure and interest in the film, and in Shinkai, moving forward.

I also appreciate Hosoda's work more than Shinkai's. But it's pretty clear that Shinkai's work definitely resonated with Japanese audiences more over the years, indicated in the most incredible way possible by his first wide theatrical release (Your Name.).

September can sometimes be strong, depending on the strength of the Summer holdovers and what's released in mid-September to take advantage of the couple holidays that week (sometimes a tentpole or two finds itself in that slot). It is, however, still one of the weaker months, while October is definitely among the weakest. It usually goes (not 100% of the time, mind you): August > July > December > April > March > January > September > February > May > November > June > October. The weakest four months can vary in position, it just depends on the holdovers from the prior month and if any opener manages to breakout. So, if Your Name. does indeed continue its insane pace and winds up near or over 20 billion ($200 million), its release just makes it all the more impressive since its run didn't occur over any of the strongest months. It'll make it through December (in its 15th week...), but you get my point.

In its fourth weekend, it stayed above 800,000 admissions once again, and also becomes the first film to ever achieve a fourth weekend above ¥1 billion, too. Words are becoming hard to come by to describe this film at this point.. Also, after Monday, the film exceeded the ¥9 billion ($89 million) milestone on 6.98 million admissions on its 25th day in release, making it the second fastest film to ever reach the mark behind, again, only Spirited Away. It's on course to reach the ¥10 billion ($100 million) milestone on Thursday, only its 28th day in release, which will make it the second fastest film to reach the uber-blockbuster milestone after, again, only Spirited Away (25 days). There seems to be no slowing down for this film (seriously, expect to see it at #1 until sometime in November), and the fact that it's outpacing everything other than Spirited Away with minimal holiday support (only two days worth after this Thursday) is absolutely incredible, and is without a doubt the most impressive run in Japan of all-time. Expect this one to likely exceed ¥20 billion ($200 million). >A Silent Voice debuts in a distant, but strong, second place. The anime film is also playing at just 120 locations, making this debut all the more impressive. And since Monday, the film earned ¥411,126,450 ($4.0 million) on 310,083 admissions. Shochiku has another small-scale anime success on their hands here, and I wouldn't rule out a potential run at ¥2 billion ($20 million). >Rage settles for a fourth place start, but with a debut over the weekend frame comfortably above ¥200 million, and a 3-day total of of ¥348,438,000 ($3.4 million) on 264,722 admissions across 324 screens after Monday, this opening is perfectly acceptable. >Shin Godzilla is back to enjoying its incredible holds and remains in the Top 5 in its eighth week of release. After Monday, it has exceeded ¥7 billion ($68 million) on 4.87 million admissions. There is now a strong likelihood that the third reboot of the Godzilla franchise is going to reach ¥8 billion ($75 million+) with over 5.5 million admissions... this result is truly exceptional, as it's going to become the most-attended Godzilla film since 1965, and only the second domestic live-action film to reach ¥8 billion since 2009. Toho could not have hoped for more from their third reboot of their most-iconic creation. >The BFG bombed. There isn't much to really say here other than how disappointing this number is, especially with Spielberg at the helm. >The Secret Life of Pets quietly exceeded ¥4 billion over its sixth weekend, and probably last weekend in the Top 10. In doing so, it's only the second non-Disney/Pixar, imported animated film, to ever reach that milestone (the first being Minions).

Its fourth weekend remains higher than its opening weekend, too, making it only the second film on record (Frozen being the other) to achieve that feat as well. Makoto Shinkai's incredible high-praised triumph continues along with its unprecedented performance, and its two-week total of ~¥8.4 billion could end up being the second-highest two-week total of all-time, only behind Spirited Away. Monday happens to be a holiday, the film's first (its doing these insane numbers without any holiday support so far), which should brings its total very close to ¥9 billion ($90 million), thus making it the second-fastest film to reach the mark (behind Spirited Away). I said it'd probably reach ¥10 billion on either its 30th or 31st day in release, but it's outpacing that projection and could exceed the mark on its 28th or 29th day instead. If it does it in 28 days, it'll be the second-fastest film to achieve uber-blockbuster status, behind, again, only Spirited Away. >A Silent Voice debuts in second place, and did so by only playing at 122 locations. An opening around ¥250 million ($2.5 million) is likely, possibly a bit higher since small-scale anime films sometimes boast high avg. ticket prices, making this another big success in Shochiku's near-limited release anime film list. >Rage experienced a healthy Sunday increase, so I'm pretty confident it'll come in above the ¥200 million ($2 million) mark now. >The BFG also enjoyed a nice Sunday bump, and it should be enough get it over the ¥100 million ($1 million) mark for the weekend, but not much higher. Overall, I'd still consider the film a bomb for Disney in the market.

Yes, it delivered its biggest single day ever today, too. The Saturday-to-Saturday drop (~16%) will likely prevent a weekend increase, but a single digit drop, possibly as low as 5%, is likely. It "only" needed a 14.3% to beat Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's fourth weekend record, and that record is all but assured now. Also, it's looking very likely that Your Name. will become the first film to ever achieve a fourth weekend above ¥1 billion as well. Weekend Estimates will be up in a couple hours.

It'll comfortably exceed $70 million. It'll make around $1.5 million this weekend for a total around $67 million, and has two holidays coming up on Monday and Thursday, so it should be at $69 million, or even $70 million, before next weekend begins I'd say. It'll likely finish between $75-78 million or so.

No film has ever achieved a fourth weekend above ¥1 billion, and I don't think that'll be changing this weekend, but it's going to come really close and could take Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's fourth weekend record of ¥972.2 million. I know it fell short of taking the second weekend record after I said it was "very likely", but this weekend is a lot easier since it doesn't require an increase, nor a sub-10% decrease, to achieve it. Its four-week total is also going to comfortably exceed ¥8 billion, making it only the sixth film to reach exceed the milestone after four weeks, and depending on the total after Sunday, its four-week total could be anywhere from the second to fifth highest ever (after Spirited Away, the next three are quite close). I'll post the biggest fourth weeks chart in a bit. >A Silent Voice is only playing at 120 locations, but its pre-sales are very impressive (~27% of its available tickets). It'll be limited in what it can do over the weekend due to its screen count, but a potential second place debut with ¥200 million, or more, is looking pretty reasonable right now. >Rage should experience a solid debut, but nothing is indicating it'll perform particularly well, so it'll need to rely on legs to propel it. Pre-sales are decent, but ¥200 million will be tough unless walk-ups are strong, and Sunday delivers. >The BFG is going to disappoint and likely miss the Top 5.

No film has ever achieved a fourth weekend above 1 billion, so that was always going to be a difficult figure to reach... however, if Sunday does deliver, it'd need a 12% decline to stay above 1 billion. I don't think it's going to happen, but it's within reach. Golden Week, while being one of the three biggest weeks of the year, occurs during/right before two of the weakest months of the year (May/June). Notable films get released in April ahead of Golden Week, but they're not usually the major tentpoles on the release schedule since post-Golden Week earnings are generally weak and rely more on a strong reception to counter the upcoming weak pre-Summer period. A Spring (March) release is often more favorable than April as well, since a film is able to enjoy the Spring Break week (not a major week, but still lucrative) with the hope that it'll still be playing strong going into Golden Week next month. The main point being: While Golden Week is a major week, it alone usually isn't worth scheduling a major tentpole prior if mid/late December (before New Year) or mid-July through early-August (Summer Vacation/Obon), and sometimes mid-March (Spring Break), are an option and available.

Shin Godzilla will be fine. It'll likely come in 6th next weekend, but I wouldn't rule out 5th either. I wouldn't worry about its upcoming holds whatsoever. There's actually 20 or so new releases, but that's not unusual (Japan releases and receives LOTS of films, the majority being limited releases). After three weeks in release, it has sold over 4.8 million admissions. Rather than typing paragraphs highlighting its unprecedented performance, I'll just provide a list of its biggest achievements below instead: Here's the list of this weekend's biggest achievements: >Biggest Third Weekend of All-Time for an Animated Film (NEW RECORD). >Biggest Third Weekend of All-Time for a Domestic Film (NEW RECORD). >3rd Biggest Third Weekend of All-Time (behind the first two Harry Potter films). >5th Film to Achieve a Third Weekend Above ¥1 billion. >6th Biggest Three-Week Total of All-Time. >3rd Biggest Three-Week Total for an Animated Film (behind Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle). >3rd Biggest Three-Week Total for a Domestic Film (behind, again, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle). >2nd Film to Achieve a Third Weekend Greater Than Its Opening Weekend (Frozen being the other). The sci-fi/fantasy/romance film continues to reach record/near record results after three weeks, and is showing almost no signs of slowing down anytime soon (compared to last Mon., it only dropped 2%, as well). At its current pace, it's going to exceed ¥8 billion ($80 million) after next weekend, and is very likely to reach the ¥10 billion ($100 million) milestone in 31 days or less (only four other films tie or best that pace). It's suddenly become a likely ¥15 billion ($150 million) milestone, which could earn it a Top 10 position on the all-time list, and could even climb as high as ¥20 billion ($200 million). >Suicide Squad comes in a very distant second place, unsurprisingly, but its debut is an absolute success. Over its debut weekend, Warner's band of bad guys sold an impressive 246,512 admissions over the weekend across 581 screens. This opening allows it to beat The Dark Knight Rises's ¥372 million debut, and claims the title of biggest opening weekend for a DC film in the market! Superhero films are naturally frontloaded in the market, but a total slightly over ¥2 billion ($20 million) should be doable. >Your Lie in April comes in third place selling a solid 200,036 admissions over the weekend on 294 screens. I misspoke over the weekend calling this a shojo adaptation, when it's actually a shonen adaptation. Shonen films have a very wide range when it comes to debuts compared to shojo films, and often have varying plots, so comparing it to other shonen films is difficult. The debut, though, is quite solid and should allow it to reach a total around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million). >Shin Godzilla experiences its worst drop-to-date, but a 31% decline in its seventh week of release against four successful wide openers is still quite strong. And after seven weeks in release, it's managed to exceed 4.5 million admissions. It's already sold more tickets than any Godzilla film since 1966, but now it's looking quite likely that it'll sell over 5.13 million admissions, beating 1965's Invasion of Astro-Monster as well! It's on track to exceed an incredible ¥7.5 billion ($75 million) (that'd give it a multiplier over 12!). >Samurai Hustle Returns! rounds out the top 5, debuting with 171,000 admissions over the weekend across 282 screens. The period-comedy earned a low avg. ticket price, indicating it skewed toward a senior audience as most period-comedies tend to do. This is another successful debut this weekend, and it'll be targeting a total near ¥1.5 billion ($15 million). >Gods of Egypt was the weekend's weakest opener, and while it misses the top 5, it actually didn't far too badly, especially compared to expectations. Since opening on Friday, it sold 113,154 admissions, and that's fine for this type of film that could have easily bombed.

Last weekend, it achieved the sixth biggest weekend of all-time after being the only film to ever earn a second weekend increase after debuting above ¥900 million. And this weekend, it'll at least achieve the third biggest third weekend of all-time (first for a domestic film), and if it actually increased again, it'll become the only film to ever increase after achieving a ¥1 billion weekend. After three weeks, its total only trails the first two Harry Potter films, two Miyazaki films (Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle), and is on par with The Matrix Reloaded and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (New Years boost for the latter). Its third weekend, however, is bigger than any of them besides the two Harry Potter entries... at the moment (actuals could put it above even them). At the current rate that it's going, that is staying even/slightly increasing, it'll exceed ¥8 billion ($80 million) over its fourth weekend before heading into a partial-holiday week, and will very likely exceed ¥10 billion ($100 million) over its fifth weekend on its 30th/31st day in release. By comparison, only four other films have exceeded ¥10 billion in equal/less time: Spirited Away (25 days); Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (28 days); Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (30 days); Ponyo (31 days). Three of them did so with the boost that Obon Festival gave them, and the other (Potter) did so with the boost that New Years gave it. And all of them ended up grossing over ¥15 billion ($150 million+). If it does end up above ¥10 billion ($100 million) after its fifth weekend, then ¥15-20 billion ($150-200 million) becomes the likely total, with a reasonable chance of even exceeding ¥20 billion ($200 million) itself. >Suicide Squad comes in a little lower than pre-sales indicated, and was a bit frontloaded over the weekend frame as well. However, based on estimates, its debut is slightly higher than Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice's, and it may be greater than The Dark Knight Rise's ¥372 million to earn itself the title of biggest DC opening in the market. It'll be targeting a total around 2 billion ($20 million). Very impressive. >Your Lie in April settles for the standard shojo adaptation opening, and that's perfectly alright. The genre usually has above average legs, so a total around ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) can be obtained with this start. >Samurai Hustle Returns! earns itself a respectable debut, and may have broke ¥200 million ($2 million). I'm anticipating its audience skewed possibly old enough to lower its avg. ticket price, though, so I'm going with an estimate just below the mark. Either way, a total over ¥1 billion ($10 million) is guaranteed. >Gods of Egypt actually had a decent enough opening, even if the figure and ranking themselves are poor; it could have done much worse, and this start at least avoided bomb territory.

A very good weekend, indeed. Your Name., I believe, will end up with another weekend increase and potentially claiming the third weekend record (it's going to be very close). Suicide Squad's pre-sales were a bit misleading, as it appears it may narrowly miss the 400 million mark - which is still an excellent result, and possibly enough to become DC's biggest opener (again, it's going to be very close). Your Lie in April will comfortably come in above 200 million, and may have hit 250 million. That's more or less the standard opening for a shojo adaptation, but it's good nonetheless. Samurai Hustle Returns! may have broke 200 million as well, depending on its audience breakdown. Even Gods of Egypt, honestly, performed a bit better than expectations. Unless its 3D share was horrible, it looks like it'll barely crack the 100 million mark for the weekend. That's not much, of course, but it could have been much worse. Weekend Estimates will be up in an hour or so.

I'd say a weekend increase is likely once again, even if it ends up being 1 or 2%. Regardless of whatever the increase is, if any (could still decline a couple percentages), a third weekend so comfortably above 1 billion is nuts.

"Silver Week" can be confusing. Technically, this year doesn't have a "Silver Week". Monday, the 19th, and Thursday, the 22nd, are the two holidays this year have two normal days separate them. Due to Japan holiday laws, if a weekday falls between two holidays, then it, too, becomes a holiday. And if a holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday, then it gets moved to Monday. This all happened last year, so there was a 5-day holiday period in mid-September last year. It won't happen again until 2026, unless the government moves around the holidays, or adds another one into the week (which is being discussed).
