  1. Oh yes, that's correct. Batman may have grossed up to 3 billion yen since the distributors share is usually around 65%. Batman is going to hold that title for quite some time I feel.
  2. Impossible. Honestly, The Amazing Spider-Man's opening weekend shouldn't be far off The Avenger's total. The only Superhero films that became hits were the Spider-Man films and that's because Spider-Man has been a well-known figure in Japanese Pop Culture since the 1970's. There have been live-action TV shows and many other forms of media/entertainment over the years featuring Spider-Man.And the highest grossing, most attended Superhero film after the Spider-Man films is still the original Batman from the 80's which grossed 1.91 billion yen (dib share). The Avengers is also opening on a dead weekend, the first post-Obon Festival weekend. This date definitely shows there isn't much expectation for it in Japan. The weekend it opens would be comparable to perhaps post-Thanksgiving weekend in the states. That's not to say it won't do well, though, because I think it can challenge 1.91 billion yen and become the highest grossing non-Spider-Man superhero film. Currently, 1.91 billion yen is about $24 million.
  3. I'll be making a post on that later this week, possibly as early as tomorrow.
  4. June 9-10 Weekend Admission Rankings 1 (NEW) Glow of Fireflies (Toho), Week 1 2 (1) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa), Week 3 3 (2) Thermae Romae (Toho), Week 7 4 (3) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.), Week 4 5 (NEW) We Bought a Zoo (FOX), Week 1 6 (4) The Final Judgement (Nikkatsu), Week 2 7 (6) Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures), Week 5 8 (5) Girl (Toho), Week 3 9 (7) Black Dawn (TOEI), Week 2 10 (8) Space Brothers (Toho), Week 6 11 (NEW) Soul Surfer (Disney), Week 1 Close race for the top spot this weekend. Glow of Fireflies wins the weekend in admissions with 242,821 and grossed 313,657,500 yen ($3.96 million) on 316 screens, but MIB 3 beats that gross with 315,024,700 yen ($3.97 million) with 202,096 admissions. It's been awhile since we've had split winners. MIB 3 raises it's total to 2,220,116,400 yen ($27.9 million) and 1,496,852 admissions after 17 days in release. We Bought a Zoo debuted on 457 screens to 89,724,700 yen ($1.13 million) with 74,229 admissions over the weekend. Since Friday, the film has grossed 113,651,500 yen ($1.43 million) with 95,356 admissions. Soul Surfer misses the Top 10 in admissions, but might have managed a 10th place ranking in gross. Full figures will be released tomorrow.
  5. The Amazing Spider-Man has the year locked up as far as Hollywood films are concerned, though it may still only finish third or fourth for the year.
  6. Yep, and a much needed hit for Hollywood which has been struggling something terrible this year. MIB 3 is the first Hollywood release since M:I-4 to cross 2 billion yen. It also appears that MIB 3 is #1 again this weekend despite estimates. It ranked above Glow of Fireflies at three of the four major theater chains.I'll have the Weekend Rankings posted in the morning (or 10 or so hours from this post).
  7. SATURDAY DATA Openers, Glow of Fireflies (Toho) 21.1% ahead of Liar Game: Reborn's opening day. We Bought a Zoo (FOX) 40.8% ahead of The Descendants opening day. Soul Surfer (Disney) 41.4% ahead of The Vow's opening day. Holdovers (Top 5), drops/increases compared to last Saturday: MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) -26.0% Thermae Romae (Toho) -12.7% Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) -34.4% Girl (Toho) -38.1% Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures) -24.7% Thermae Romae refuses to slow down even just a little bit. June 9-10 Updated Weekend Projections 1 (NEW) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥370-380 million ($4.5 million), Week 1 2 (1) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥295-305 million ($3.7 million), Week 3 3 (2) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥175-180 million ($2.3 million), Week 7 4 (3) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) ¥120-125 million ($1.5 million), Week 4 5 (NEW) We Bought a Zoo (FOX) ¥80-85 million ($1 million), Week 1 6 (6) Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥70-75 million ($900,000), Week 5 7 (5) Girl (Toho) ¥65-70 million ($800,000), Week 3 8 (NEW) Soul Surfer (Disney) ¥40-45 million ($500,000), Week 1 9 (7) Black Dawn (TOEI) ¥40-45 million ($500,000), Week 2 No data was available for The Final Judgement, but it should come in around ¥70/80 million in it's second week. I also have to do some research but if Thermae Romae has a seventh weekend over ¥175 million, not only does that beat HP7's seventh weekend (¥172 million), it could beat Pirates 4's (¥188 million), too, considering Sunday is usually stronger than Saturday. So that would mean it could end up having the biggest seventh weekend since sometime in 2010. I'm also seeing it possibly spending 12 weeks in the Top 10, and ¥6 billion ($75 million) is becoming more and more likely.
  8. June 9-10 Weekend Forecast 1 (NEW) Glow of Fireflies (Toho) ¥325-340 million ($4-4.3 million), Week 1 2 (1) MIB 3 (Toho-Towa) ¥285-310 million ($3.5-3.8 million), Week 3 3 (2) Thermae Romae (Toho) ¥160-170 million ($2-2.2 million), Week 7 4 (3) Dark Shadows (Warner Bros.) ¥130-140 million ($1.6-1.8 million), Week 4 5 (NEW) We Bought a Zoo (FOX) ¥95-105 million ($1.2-1.3 million), Week 1 6 (4) The Final Judgement (Nikkatsu) ¥85-90 million ($1-1.1 million), Week 2 7 (5) Girl (Toho) ¥75-80 million ($950,000-$1 million), Week 3 8 (6) Sadako 3D (Kadokawa Pictures) ¥65-70 million ($800-850,000), Week 5 9 (7) Black Dawn (TOEI) ¥50-55 million ($600-650,000), Week 2 10 (NEW) Soul Surfer (Disney) ¥40-45 million ($500-550,000), Week 1 Glow of Fireflies will likely open in the same range (300/400 million yen) as God's Medical Record and Flowering Dogwood. We Bought a Zoo is opening at 316 locations and could break 100 million yen over the weekend. If it fails to reach the mark during the weekend, it's 3-day take (Friday opener) should be able to. Soul Surfer is opening at only 169 locations this weekend, but should be able to make the Top 10. I doubt it makes 50 million yen, though. Milestone Watch: Thermae Romae may exceed 5 billion yen ($62.5 million) and 4 million admissions after 44 days in release. MIB 3 will exceed 2 billion yen ($25 million) and 1.5 million admissions after 17 days in release. It see around 2.2 billion yen ($27 million) on Sunday. Dark Shadows may reach 1.5 million admissions giving it about 1.8 billion yen ($23 million) after 23 days.
  9. Hey, guys. Sorry I haven't been updating over here. I thought I had time to handle multiple forums, but I honestly don't. However! I will post Weekend Forecasts, Weekend Rankings, basically most weekly updates from here on out! I promise!
  10. Alright. The second post is fully updated now. Now, every Sunday night I will post the Top films (ranked by admissions) from the four biggest cinema chains in Japan: Toho Cinemas, Warner Mycal, Shikoku Cinema, and Cinema Sunshine. The most accurate chain when compared to the National Ranking is Toho Cinemas because Toho operates the most theaters and screens in the country (almost 25%). They're also the first to update each Sunday. May 12-13 Weekend Admission Rankings TOHO CINEMAS 1. Thermae Romae (Toho) Week 3 2. Sadako 3D (Kadakowa Pictures) Week 1 3. Space Brothers (Toho) Week 2 4. Larry Crowne (Disney) Week 1 5. Detective Conan: The Eleventh Striker (Toho) Week 5 6. Kamisugi (Toho Video Division) Week 1 7. We Were There: Part II (Toho) Week 4 8. Kamen Rider X Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen (TOEI) Week 4 9. SPEC: The Movie (Toho) Week 6 10. Chronicles of My Mother (Shochiku) Week 3 Warner Mycal, Shikoku, and Sunshine will update later tonight (this morning). Sadako 3D (the latest film in the Ring series) is expected to debut with 200 million yen (about $2.5 million); Larry Crowne near 100 million yen ($1.2 million); Kamisugi is a Toho Cinemas exclusive and won't appear in other rankings.
  11. I'm still updating the second post so everything isn't completely updated (the admissions section is now, however). The one you saw was the copy/paste I did from my other thread (outdated).Titanics number comes from an article on Spirited Away's 115th day in release when it surpassed Titanic in admissions.
  12. The second post of this thread has been updated to include Yearly Statistics, All-Time Admissions, History (1980-Present), and General notes to remember about the box office.
  13. I wouldn't expect much in Japan even if it's performing really well in the rest of Asia. As you said, Superhero films are unpopular, and besides the Spider-Man franchise which has been a well-known property since the 70's in Japan, Batman (1989) is still the highest grossing superhero film with 1.9 billion yen. And that mark is more than likely the ceiling for The Avengers. 1.9 billion yen currently equals about $24 million. The poor release date also shows signs of low expectations. It's not unusual for Japan to get Hollywood films last, but The Avengers is opening at the end of Summer and right after Obon Week (one of the three biggest weeks of the year).

  15. I think the Sunday drop will be closer to Thor than Iron Man 2.The numbers are so huge I don't even feel shocked anymore. Battleship is gonna get smashed.
